I'm 47 years old Japanese. When I was in elementary school, I watched this movie on TV while I was home alone. I had forgotten most of the story, but I clearly remember the dark atmosphere that permeated the entire movie and the horror of the black sea. In particular, the scene where a man falls into a live fish warehouse and dies along with a skeleton was shocking for young children. I couldn't remember the title of the movie for a long time, but luckily UA-cam guided me. Thank you for letting me watch this movie. It brought back memories of my childhood.
"Live fish warehouse"...someone's using Ggle Translate.
Mm ooke 👌
Ok
UA-cam sometimes guides you to childhood memories. Tha same has happened to me.
Never seen this Movie before!! But it reminds me of the movie the EXSOST!
This movie is such a master piece im watching again in 2024 after 30years
Thankyou for your comment, I am going to watch it after reading good reviews ❤
I'm pretty sure it was over 30 years ago
44 years not 30. This movie says it was realeased in 1980.
I saw this movie in Hollywood when it first came out! I was a teenager.
Good old times! 😊
Any film with George Kennedy gets an automatic extra star. Great actor!
loved it when he was on Dallas
The King of the Airport Movies!
Despite what the critics say, this film isn't so bad. It's a humble, low budget, imaginative, interesting, horror film. It's stood the test of time & is now being rediscovered & appreciated. Can't believe the millions of views & positive comments this film has received, It's great that the horror movie fans ignored the stuck up know-it-all critics who hated this film & who wanted everyone else to hate it too.
Don't RECKON I've ever seen this flick, although two great actors star in it.... I'm gonna have to watch it in its entirety ...I HATE boats.
not even a horror fan. think i got it recommended because i watch brick immortar / safety review/audits of naval disasters. i watched it anyway and i really thought it was pretty good! critics probably get bored because they want to be entertained constantly so they don't have any time to listen to their own thoughts. this film had lots of moodbuilding time to just pause and think. that's probably why they had a bad experience. their thoughts suck.
@@spilledbitch I hate how the critics praise high end films & try to bury fun little horror movies like DEATH SHIP (or the FRIDAY THE 13TH films) with either bad reviews or no reviews at all - ignoring the films altogether. Fortunately people are smart, have minds of their own, & go over the critics heads.

tc?he 😢 I'm out with m
You want something really depressing about how critics mess things up for everyone, take a look at the Hudson Hawk page on Wikipedia. To me, one of Bruce Willis' best films, something original from the rest of his stuff, for the most part, and it shows he made a public apology to people over it, just because it wasn't another Die Hard, or the like.
Update: Just looked at the site, myself, again, and looks like they removed that little tidbit, unless I'm missing it somewhere, but, used to be on the page.
You just cannot beat one of these vintage horror films as time goes by they become classics of their time .
this sucks and you know it

The movie is even more eerie when you think of the might of the evil Nazis and all the atrocities during WW2. The torture chamber, the hung frozen bodies, the skeletons in the net, all of these are for real during that time.
That Boat is one mean Ship.
I swear this film gave me PTSD in the 80’s.
Very very scary and wonderful movie
Big budget
Death ship was shot in 1979 and released in 1980.I watched this movie for the first time back in 1991 on an VHS rental tape, one of very many rental VHS movies.
What a nice time I had back in the early 90's watching movies and Tv shows e.t.c.
Well I watch Ghost ship and man I got to tell you something the opening scene was brutal man I couldn't handle it but I'm not going to spoil too much about that movie it starts that chick from ER Juliana margarit that f****** movie was too brutal for me I first saw it on mystery recap then I wouldn't watch the full movie I will say this spoiler alert the black brother thought he was going to get some Italian p****
@Per Apelman. Yes, I agree!! The '90's was a awesome time period, for me, also 😁!! My wife (then girlfriend) would watch, continuous sci-fi/horror, films (alot more channels then, had special spook nights, festivals)!! Wonderful memories 👍! Also still have to this day, a LARGE collection of films, I accumulated from back, then 😉!!
@@guthabanglasdash8641 Did you know that "GHOSTSHIP", was actually a remake? The original came out, in 1942-43. It's about a couple who purchase a haunted, schooner⛵. It's not 'over--the--top' scary, but worth the time🕰️!!

I can remember where I rented this from in the 80's. Good horror flick back then and still is in present day. Thx for posting
The best horror is always made on a shoestring budget
I remember meeting George Kennedy at an event called Autographica.
I took my copy of Deathship on dvd to get signed.
I think it wasn't long after then he passed away.
One of the characters: "It's incredible. What is this ship even using for fuel?"
Answer: The souls of the damned.
Im obsessed with older movies. I dont even watch the new ones anymore.
Richard Crenna . Oh I miss his acting. So laid back. R I P Richard
Oh no!!!!😢
He also play on Rambo
If only Rambo would show up. 🙂
My first time watching this. I worked in a video store years ago putting up movies. I’ll never forget always seeing the cover of this movie in the horror section.

"What do we do ?"
"Let's all go to sleep...."
Enjoyable, well directed film. Excellent acting by both adult and juvenile actors. Thank you.
Deathship was shot in 1979 and released in 1980.The movie is not well known today, but it was in my childhood long ago.I'm happy to see that both old and new people watch Deathship this time on UA-cam some for the first time.

Hi
This is a legendary horror film, very creepy and scary....George Kennedy was excellent...very underrated actor...who also starred in comedy very funny too.
Very eerie when you think of the might and power of the evil Nazis and all their atrocities during WW2. The torture chamber, the hung frozen bodies, the skeletons in the net, all of these are for real during that time.
Classic scary movie WITHOUT the blood and torture scenes. Great flick, Hollywood could learn from this.
So very very true! This is an excellent movie I've seen it many times!!! Great free showing!
@@christyphillips3906.
Agree
It takes real talent to make a truly chilling horror movie without gore and violence.
I think the most explicit and horrorful scenes had been cut in this version: 1. The scene showing the full disfigured face of the old woman. 2
The blood shower. 3. The captain throwing the bloody corpse of the young lady. I came here for those scenes but I go home disappointed...
Thus movie al.ost reminds me of the Titanic, I know nit the same but k8nda of spooky ❤
the best ghost ship horror movie ever
This wasn't better than the one with the actress from E.R
That's was really good!
The ship was evil
Richard Crenna, one of my favorite actors !!! They say in real life he was a really nice person. Well id be to with knowing who He commanded in Vietnam for three years.
I remember seeing the poster for this film on billboards and bus stops when I was a little kid. Never watched it though. I just remember the skull ship. I thought Ghost Ship was a remake of this because the posters are similar. I'm glad I finally get to watch it after over 40 years.

Been a fan of this movie since I was 12 (about 12 years ago). I suspect that the real life prototype for the ship in this movie may have been the German auxiliary cruiser/merchant raider Kormoran. But the actual freighter they used for the film was an American ship called the Maurine K, built in 1965, and scrapped in 1986.
How do you, as a 24 year old, know the name of the ship and when it was built? It looks like a late 50s to early 60s ship to me. There were no “bulk carrier” freighters, which this is, during WWII. An auxiliary cruiser would make more sense, along with Ashland wearing that badge instead of a U-Boat badge.
@@Komet163B I mean, I wouldn't have to be born in the 50s to know the name of the ship. I'm a ship enthusiast, and I've done my research. The ship you see in the movie was built in 1965. And she was called Maurine K at the time of filming this movie. But I was saying that what inspired the idea for the movie's fictional ship (not how it looks, but its actual purpose) was the German ship Kormoran. She was a freighter built in 1938, and converted to an auxiliary cruiser/merchant raider (a ship that disguises itself as a cargo ship to raid other ships) when the war started.
@@transatlanticnostalgia4655 The ship was poorly maintained and had a hard life for being only 15 years old when the movie was released. You can see in most of the scenes it’s not even moving. Instead a camera boat is moving around it to try to make it look like it can move under its own power. They refer to it as an interrogation/torture ship which is pure fiction/fantasy from the script writer. Being an auxiliary cruiser/raider was not “evil” enough for their story. It’s kind of a Shock Waves rip off, replacing the Nazi zombies with Nazi ghosts. Though Shock Waves also had a freighter ghost ship. The ship wreck seen in that movie I’ve heard of, and still exists, unlike this Maurine ship, which your the only person that seems to know anything about it. You probably know the name of the ship that the German order telegraph belongs to. And it’s interesting that a British/Canadian production used a dilapidated American vessel in their film. If the Death Ship were to have actually attempted to ram a cruise ship, it most likely would’ve resulted in the sinking of the Death Ship, instead of the cruise ship.
Hi, I heard about this movie when i was 6 years old. My grandma used to make me afraid with this movie. 😂 and today i am finally watching it. I am super excited. I'm 21 years old. And watching on August 25 2024❤❤. Please like my comment 🎉🎉❤❤
A surprisingly good low budget simple fairly straightforward film with a well selected cast and a inexpensive plot. What I can't quite figure out so far (36:57) is, is the ship itself doing these things, or are the cast surrounded by invisible ghosts who are doing it. Possibly inspired by William Hope Hodgeson's sea stories.
Wow! Forty-two years ago. That's even more time than the end of WWII and the making of this movie. Damn, I feel old.

Am sure the music, llow lights, background scores.. might made everyone scary in the old days. Now not much. Suspense less horror movie that made me surprise. 👍
I remembered a very loooong scene with blood in the shower, when I saw it in the '80. Cut?!
Great movie
Remember seeing this character's death scene @24:25 on tv as a kid back in the 80's...it haunted me for years!
Yeah it's a real foreskin-thanker
Good movie. Very scary and mysterious. I do wonder how these survivors were able to make it to the lifeboats and the rest die.
Very good movie. 👍🍿
I watched the uncut version on Betamax cassette in 1980. I was 9 years old.
Made in 1980? I would've guessed 1960 from the manner of speech, and behavior of the cast. Interesting plot, something like that has been in other films with variations on that theme, most notably "Ghost Ship". I'm thinking the engine was steam powered, but it may have been a Diesel since there wasn't a boiler room shown, but who knows.
The film has a foreign quality to it like it sounds dubbed but you must not know much about 1960 vs 1980, there were no cruise ships with Discos on them for example 20 years earlier. Go watch a few movies from 1960 and get back.
Honestly
I remember seeing this on the movie rack every time I'd go to the video store when I was 13 back in the 80's. The VHS box always fascinated me but I never saw the movie, until now, now that im 52 years old!! Not as bad as I thought it would be, haha!!

This weird low budget offering is a curious role for George Kennedy, having been starring alongside Clint Eastwood in thunderbolt and lightfoot and the Eiger sanction,it certainly didn't stretch his ability as an actor.

Cool. This was the original Deathship.
Not too bad for a old movie. I suppose this film was made in the 70s. 25 years after the war ended it was still a fresh memory at this time. But what most of the comment says it was interesting since the beginning of the movie. Compare to new US movies where they are always talking for saying nothing.
It was released in 1980
Like almost drowning wasn’t enough for the captain. He gets a shit shower on his way up to the other ship. Nice *barf*

Have been searching for this forever! THANK YOU!!!!
There's a few things that you probably have noticed
It was a German World War II freighter, probably had a time or two used in the Kriegsmarine, lived a relatively anticlimactic life.
When the crew of the ocean liner picks up the echo of the approaching ghost ship on their radar, the close-up of the ship's radar imagery is a reverse-image video clip of the fog-covered "Skull Island", taken from King Kong (1976).
The footage showing the movement of the Death Ship was the result of filming from a small boat moving around it. The crew shot for about an hour before the Death Ship broke down. The rest of the required shots were achieved by faking movement, as the broken down vessel was anchored and stationary. As the ghost ship collided with the cruise liner, brief scenes of an explosion, a grand piano falling between decks, and the engine room flooding were cut in. These scenes were from The Last Voyage (1960).
When first looking in the bathroom there is a pin-up photo on the wall. The photo is of actress Betty Grable.
The black and white musical film shown on the death ship is Everything Is Rhythm (1936).
Thanks a million for the miscellaneous facts; they're really interesting, esp the subtle imagery ones! ☠️
Whatever, still it's a great movie.
Why and how do you know all of this and are you sure it’s a German freighter because I looked it up and there was no such design
