Good Day eh!!! I always find the throttle cable and spring arrangements cause me issues especially after someone else has worked on it. Nice job getting that straightened out!! Take 'er easy!!!
Hi a little question, recently i got a free lawn mower with briggs 35 classic engine (i think it is similar to the one on video). It wasn't running at all, so i installed new carburetor, springs, air filter, spark plug and cleaned fuel tank. Now it runs ok, only thing im wondering about is the 'popping' sound (from muffler?) from time to time. The same sound can be clearly heard on your video, especially from 28:00 your mower did the same 'pop' sound twice. Also in my case the spark plug turns black fast (its dry). I heard that these are old school engines and were never running super smoothly especially on idle, so maybe it is normal and i just should ignore it (furthermore my mower is probably from 2005 and i dont know it's service history, so the engine might be already litlle bit worn out) or should i check something more? Thanks in advance for your reply.
Hopefully people like you will be able to upload lots of good videos to keep us all entertained now everything is shutting down.👍 Quite evenings ahead now. Plenty of work to do and jobs on the syndicate shoot at weekends. Given up on the deer now, venisons worth nothing!
Great vid. The small adjustments you are doing whilst it's running and you take the air filter off, is that you bending the small plate at the end of where the small spring attaches?
I'm new to mower engines Mick, and I replaced my carb before taking a look at these springs and the new carb didn't really fix any issues, ready to make this fix but I'd really appreciate if you could comment on what these springs exactly do? do they move that arm to regulate how hard the mower is running? my mower seems to rev up and down in surges and I'm thinking this is why
It all depends on what set up you have mate .. take the air filter off and email me some photos of the carb and spring set up .. micksmowers01@gmail.com
Thank you for the excellent video. I have successfully followed your instructions to service my Mountfield SP470. One problem I still have is that the primer bulb gets sucked in after about 5 mins of running and the engine cuts out. If I pull the bulb back out and prime again, the engine starts and runs again for another 5 mins before repeating the cut out. any ideas what the problem could be? I have tried loosening the fuel cap in case that is the problem but that doesn't help.
Thanks. When I serviced the mower I did replace the primer bul, but I don't think it was a genuine Briggs bulb (black, original was red), so maybe I should get another one.@@themowerman
I also have this classic engine and after I had no spark and it was the coil it now goes at top speed and surging. I see the governor flap moving a lot. I guess my new springs are too tight as well but why surging as well?
@@themowerman matey it was the springs!! I replaced my 22 year old springs for new and they were too tight so the governor flap was moving up and down surging the engine and over revving it. I put old springs and now runs like always. Obviously the new springs I bought are rubbish and not designed to the right spec.
Mick my B&S lawn mower has a different configuration on the governor as it passes around to the back of the mower on the same side as the carburetor and has no place to attach the bigger spring on, where does this spring have to be attached? the lawnmower starts and idles but does not pick up revs to cut the grass?

Glad you got the old girl running and sounding sweet. You appear to have invested a lot of time and effort not to mention cost with the new governor springs, diaphragm and gasket, oil, spark plug and especially if it needs a new dead mans cable. How do you decide what’s viable and when it it is time to call it a day. Keep up the great work and the videos coming.
Hi Mick, seems like it’s got a slight little miss on this at the end of your video. Is this normal? Mines doing the same every now and then slight little pop / miss. I’ve changed diaphragm & gasket Briggs & Stratton genuine one, £15 quid on new governor springs, adjusted coil air gap with a business card and it still produces a little pop now and then is this normal ? Thanks bud all the best.
Is the muffler guard loose? That cage seems to move and vibrate. I have never been a fan of those. My Dad would not let us be in the yard while he mowed. It was 1976 before I was allowed to even touch the mower. Age 10 and up was Dad's rule. A lot of the safety equipment is just a replacement for common sense. Good job Mick. Nice fix. I liked the music a lot also.
Mick I have the very same engine the primer won’t prime the fuel into the carb, I’ve cleaned the carb twice now & everything looks good but still the same problem doing my head in any advice mate?
Hey Mick need help, I have a 1978 briggs and Stratton that pops and splatters with the air filter but runs as it should without it, air filter isn’t blocked how do I fix this problem? (edit , never mind I’ve found my problem filter holder thing was pushing down on the spring making it just idle and barely run)
Ive got the same engine, which is surging and overrevving. Have changed the gasket and diaphragm, new springs and it is still over revving and surging. Do you know what else i can try?
It's one of tow things I would say.. the carburetor needs cleaning or the little metal tab that the small spring goes on needs bending towards the back of the mower.. you can adjust the revving by bending it
My mower lost power after getting stuck under some pine trees. I took all the screws apart and found a spring that was just hanging on to one side and not the other. Its too dark so ill fix it in the morning.
I have a Briggs motor 3.75hp Sprint with adjustable throttle on a pressure washer. Can’t get the motor to turn off When I slide the throttle control to “Stop.” It almost seems my springs are too long to push the Governor vane. How do I solve THAT problem? Overall, a good video!
Follow the cable to where it connects to the engine.. there will be a small switch.. clean it and adjust the cable so it closes the switch. Then it will stop..
