I believe that the amount of stress from his workplace at school made him age faster and the humiliation from children which could be referred to his voice line "I hear the children laughing at me." Created a dislike for children and whatever caused him the scar was probably the nail in the coffin for his career as a teacher and the beginning of a phobia. Having an injury close to your eye would probably be traumatic for anyone, considering the potential to lose an eye along with your vision. And with the bane of his existence being children it's a probability that they are the sole cause of said scar. This might be extreme, but a child could have tried to stab him in the eye with a sharp object (maybe a pencil?) which is damn brutal and understandably creates fear/hatred towards children.
