DUNE Soundtrack (by Stéphane Picq) on AdLib + MT-32 + AdLib Gold

  • Combined soundtracks on three different music modules. All three soundtracks were recorded on real hardware. AdLib and AdLib Gold on a downclocked Pentium II, and MT-32 through Dosbox with a real MT-32 attached. Here are some observations after having done this exercise:
    - There are some skipped notes in the AdLib version, mostly in the "Sietch" song. This missing time made matching the songs together a bit more difficult.
    - The same song doesn't necessarily have the same length depending on which soundcard you're listening it on. I don't know WHY this is. Hypothesis is that Stéphane Picq re-composed the songs specifically for each soundcard.
    - I recorded the AdLib versions on the floppy version of Dune, while the MT-32 version used the CD version. Maybe that accounts for differences in soundtrack length?
    After listening to this for a while, I find that this combined version brings out the strengths of each version, while doing a good job of hiding flaws. It's hard to return to the standard individual soundcard version of each afterwards.
    Stéphane Picq has remastered SPICE OPERA in 2024. Give it a listen!

      The Spice Opera album sounds absolutely stellar in this new version, plus the bonus game tracks made from the MT-32 and AdLib Gold recordings are an excellent touch for my retro tastes. Very happy to have provided some help!

      Hi Stephane, I was nine years old when this game came out, and I played it on my family's first DOS PC. Thirty-two years later, I am still listening to this soundtrack. The incredible music you made is the definitive soundtrack for all things Dune, to me, and I'm sure to many more.
      It is my hope that between a resurgence in retro-gaming interest, and the new movie exposing the Dune universe to a new generation, that many will go back and play the first, and classic, Dune game, and experience your wonderful soundtrack for the first time.
      and, as a long time fan, I am delighted to see that this soundtrack stays close to your heart, and that you have recently made a remaster!
      Thank you so much.

I kept this melody all these years inside my head, I even tried to find in the past, but nothing. Today I listened to it, pitch a little higher now by hey, it was inside my head for 30 years! Maybe because I only knew the Soundblaster version of the music from the PC CD game, but I much prefer the Adlib Gold version. The MT-32 sounds too orchestral (realistic?) and doesn't have the mystical quality of the Adlib version which I associate with the game.
    I mean MT-32 sounds great on Monkey Island theme and I remember wishing I had a Gravis Ultrasound/AWE32 in those days but the Adlib bleeps and pings def have something/nostalgia over the realism of the others.
    This is in the top 3 of one of the most memorable and beautiful soundtracks to any PC game I have ever played. Other is LBA and perhaps Monkey Island.

    • @theguardian8317
      @theguardian8317 4 роки тому +6

      Music for PC games in the past was a complicated thing.
      Sometimes composers didn't make the music thinking about or using the most expensive hardware available at the time or they just used what they had at hand so the music of some games actually sound better on specific hardware or systems. Sometimes some composers were asked to actually re-made the music for different hardware or for re-releases when new tech was available like the Monkey Island main theme for CD. (but also sometimes it's just the natural thing that our brains typically prefer the music version we listened the first time ever).

    • @Fuchsia_tude
      @Fuchsia_tude 3 роки тому +2

      @@theguardian8317 Also, often when a game was ported to another system they didn't have the original composer around (or available, or familiar enough with the new hardware to program for it) to re-arrange it, so somebody else did that work instead.

      Growing up I always desperately wanted to hear Spice Opera as I always imagined it would be the definitive version of my favourite game soundtrack, freed from the constraints of 90s consumer sound card technology. When I finally got to hear it for the first time it was kinda... cheesy, very 1990s, and honestly pretty disappointing.

      Ooh, Zone 66. There's another game I also remember for all the trouble it took to launch in DOS, requiring its own dedicated boot disk. (Dune's CD version finally obviated that hassle.) It was a cool game, from what I remember, but very difficult, though maybe I was just bad at arcade style games.
      I don't remember the soundtrack at all, though.

  • @tryptaminedreamer

    Great job!! I think Dune, being a great game by itself, is one of not-so-many games (another two I can remember instantly are X-Com: Enemy Unknown and Zeppelin: Giants of the sky) with FM soundtrack that sounds really cool on that cheapish (even back in mid-90s) OPL2/3 "Soundblaster" synth (Not that shitty General MIDI emulation lots of the games, including such hits as Doom and Warcraft, have used unless one was lucky enough to own AWE32, Gravis, or better).
    Dune's music engine really puts Adlib chip to it's limit, and I always thought it is a cleverly chopped-down version of a MIDI track produced for some professional FM synth. But thanks to your video, now I can compare it to MT-32 and Adlib Gold - and I must say, they sound great as well.
    But could you add a few more details, please - namely, what type of gear you did use for each of the tracks? I definitely can distinguish OPL chip from (semi-sample-based) MT32 even though I've never seen the latter, but the differences in sound between Adlib and Adlib Gold are somewhat vague for me - my first sound card was an AWE32 (and it did cost a hell of a lot for me as a teenager in not-so-rich-then country), so it was already a few years past Ad Lib Inc. got bankrupt...

    • @theSoundCarddatabase
      @theSoundCarddatabase  4 роки тому +2

      The gear I used if I remember correctly, were an AdLib from 1990, an AdLib Gold, and a LAPC-I (mostly interchangeable with a MT-32 in terms of sound). AdLib's chip is an OPL2, while the AdLib Gold's chip is an OPL3 - more voices, stereo sound AND more operators for each voice. the Gold also adds the option to use digital sounds (unavailable on the AdLib, something that Henri Chalifour used in some demo songs) and surround module that adds depth and reverb to the whole.
      But FM being FM, even with more voices and all the additional effects, there will always be that coarseness, that characteristic electronic sound, even on the Gold. In that sense, Picq used the same instruments and percussions on both versions, and I have to agree with you, the AdLib version doesn't sound -too- chopped down compared to the Gold. In part because of the sound similarity, but I believe that Picq was very thoughtful when rearranging the music for the old AdLib : my impression is that he opted to conserve sonority, more than individual notes, and it seems the choice paid off.

    like more than MT-32. But in AdLib, not everything sounds perfect either - the crossing could have come out better.

    Hi, can you share the separate recordings, preferably as downloadable FLAC files? I've made my own recording on a SB Pro a long time ago, but I don't have an Adlib Gold or a MT-32 to record those versions. And that was an OPL3 card, not an OPL2 one.It's odd that some tracks have different length in certain cards. Spice Opera is twice as long on the Adlib than on the others. The floppy version also has different sound files for each 3 sound cards, you can see them among the game files.
