The EV has had safety features added - cruise control, AEB, lane assist, lane departure - that should improve its rating up to at least a 4-star. So not as bad as it seems :)
You are the EV data Master! Thanks. As to impact safety, it will be interesting to get the confirmed MG EV stats as this is historically not an area of achievement for cars manufactured in China.
I always feel educated about other EVs to recommend them, even if not a Tesla. Likely the best reason to watch your videos. Also good to know all you can when so many ask questions. Maybe they will be less smelly with an EV
You should make a table to compare “real world range” of each car after 0, 5, 10,15... 45 minutes of charging. Considering that at 100% SoC Zoe has about 320 km real world range, ZS has only 220 km based on same test. I have the data demo EV-database and they are very accurate. This means after 45 minutes of charging ZOE will have 221 km of range and ZS will have only 189 km range. So after all Renault ZOE is charging faster.
EV database is super off when it comes to ZS EV. James and Kate did a test on motorway at 70mph (110km/h ish), at very low temperatures with heating on, and got 140 miles (220km) with few spare, and later on the way back drove at 60mph, and confirmed that WLTP range is very accurate at motorway speeds. He didn't have a chance to test it in city only driving. Combined is easy to hit 170-180 miles, with his heavy foot
The EV ZS is *likely* to be a 4 star with the extra safety assist functions (if they work properly). But the child safety score is still very concerning.
I will be interested to see the temperature of the battery during charging to see how hard diff manufacturers push their batteries and how good their thermal managements are.
Renault Zoe : 52kWh battery 395km wltp range. It will be interesting to mesure how fast you can get for exemple 30kWh on each car instead of % of full battery.
@Bjorn, thanks, very interesting. How do you get to the menu in the ZS that shows the charging speed? I just got my ZS EV and can't find that information.
Hi Bjørn, I love your Videos but this time I am irritated by some points: the batteries are clearly different sizes, aren’t they? %soc are compared. The statement the capacities are similar does not apply, when capacity is different. That should have been converted. In addition, it seems like the curve does not match the values in the video. For example the Zoe often overtakes the mg. The last videos (mg) seem to me to be less critical then your usual ones?! Are you so in love with this car ? :-)
Watch the video again. I explained this quite well. And I am being very critical as usual (if you actually watched the whole video). At least this time you didn't call me a Tesla fanboy...
Aha, now I understand what you mean when you said "Zoe often overtakes the mg". You did a noob mistake by comparing kW at a current time in the timelapse video. You have to look at what SoC each car has. The reason why Zoe had higher kW than ZS was because ZS reached higher SoC faster. Look at the graph at 7:15 instead. There you'll see that the kW for ZS (red) is higher than Zoe (yellow) all the way until 80 %.
Thanks for your reply and the informations, but isent it more interesting how mutch Energy comes into the batterie in the same time? Btw I wrote the comment because I like your videos and you never seemed to be anyone’s fanboy! if my post was not respectful, please excuse me.
@Bjorn - Thanks for video. As others have said EURO NCAP rating for ZS EV is 5 star (www.euroncap.com/en/results/mg/zs-ev/39678). Can you update video?
To save money as part of the design in the 39kwh pack. My guess is that hardly anyone bought the 39kwh kona so they decided to put the unused pre-built drivetrains into the new ioniq to try and shift them.
I would still prefer the Ioniq because of the car design and usable space. Image it would be delivered with the big Kona battery, it would give the Model 3 a run for it's money.
The MG ZS EV is properly the safest of the 3 cars. According to the newest NCAP test, the MG ZS EV got 5 stars. And 5 stars in 2019 is way better than the 5 stars for the Zoe in 2013. www.euroncap.com/en/results/mg/zs-ev/39678
Hi Bjorn, The MG ZS EV just had the Euro Ncap rating posted today, and the EV version received 5 stars. So good news for those who were worried about the 3 stars rating from the fossil version. www.euroncap.com/en/results/mg/zs-ev/39678
I researched its safety rating as soon as they annouced the electirc version and the score was a bummer for me. This car is otherwise fantastic at this price.
Safe car and 5 star car is a little bit different. Manufacturers in the Europe make cars for passing NCAP, not for the safety in the first place. If you know what's important for NCAP it's easier to build a "better" car. Bring that EU car to the US, perform IIHS tests and you'll see the difference. Without optimising car for US crash test standards it will be a disaster.
MG ZS EV actually got 5 stars in report that was released this week. cdn.euroncap.com/media/57508/euroncap-2019-mg-zs-ev-datasheet.pdf There also is a video of the testing done here : ua-cam.com/video/EhOQczzFQCI/v-deo.html Looks like you have a better car than you are aware of Bjørn !

What about Jeep? It has 1 star, yet no one complains?
Very good comparison. I'll do a check on the ZS EV in the UK on 50KW. It's fairly cold at the moment (

Incorrect. ZS has about 250-270 km real world range. The EV database can't be trusted.
@@bjornnyland The site said it is 260 km in combined roads at 23o Celcius, so it matches your experience :)

Bjørn Nyland ok, than ZOE has 350-370 km range. It’s the same. For sure ZOE is more efficient and has much bigger battery.
Tend to agree. "Miles added" would be the best metric to watch over time. Or at least interesting to add.
The EV ZS is *likely* to be a 4 star with the extra safety assist functions (if they work properly). But the child safety score is still very concerning.
ZS is good if you don't care about the pedestrians, if you don't have kids and if you drive slowly in a place with no other cars :)
