Man, awesome job 👏🏼 thank you for taking the time to set all of those up and do a well articulated, thorough review/walkthrough. This video is a gold standard of how a UA-cam walkthrough should be done.
This is what honest salesmanship looks like. He’s not even trying to sell us this product, he’s just explaining its benefits and how much he likes them. Thank you! I’m getting the 10x10 VX.
I just called competitive edge I just spoke to Charlie. He's very knowledgeable/helpful. I'm gonna buy the 10x14 super deluxe vx tent. And with me disabled I have a umbrella of MS hard to walk to a point. But Charlie helped and answered all my questions thank you Charlie
Great review ! Just purchased the Kodiak with a bundle ! Perfect timing ! We are going to key west through the gray smoke mountains then to the Elk festival this fall ! THANK TOU FOR THE INCREDIBLE REVIEW !
Nice review. Thanks. I can say these tents hold up well, I managed a very rural campground in Oregon and lived in mine 3 years. Rain, (lots) Snow, (lots) Gusty winds? No problem. The county asked me to manage a camp right on the coast for a few months. Went through a 50 mph wind with gusts to 70 mph. No problem. Near the 3rd year I did have one small leak from the roof. A good spray with silicone took care of it. I had the basic model 10x10, just me and my faithful lab. Plenty of room. This ten was very comfortable, hot or cold weather. Now as to setup - - these tents are pretty heavy (at least for me at 65 and only 5'6" yet I was still able to do it myself. 2 folks? Piece of pie (I don't care for cake all that much) I honestly can't praise the tents enough. I donated it to the county who still uses it for emergencies. 73 now, just me and dog. Thinking about the 2 person. Looks awesome. Once again that's for a great review. 1 thing "season" the tent as per instructions, don't over wet! Light sprinkle. I did it about 3 times before "moving in"
70mph?!! That's awesome feedback. We haven't been able to test over 40mph and it held up just fine, but I'm glad to know what yours has been through. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this info! I'd like to use one as an outdoor art studio in the summer, on the Oregon coast, so this is helpful. Any mildew issues when you were set up on the coast?
@@vinitapappas Not when new - the fabric was treated and very water proof. Near the 3 year mark, I had 2 small leaks spray silicone took care of it. The only issue (with any tent) be sure it's dry - dry! before rolling up and storing. And no, no mildew issues. Be sure to follow directions to "season" the canvas - very easy. I did mine twice - Directions come with tent.
@@richardwarren7492 thank you for the quick response. This is good to know as I wasn't sure how canvas would do in a humid environment. Looking forward to having an outdoor studio this summer!
September 6, 2014 My brother and I were camping in North east Oregon and we had an unexpected storm hit... I was rudely awoken at 3:50 am, to what I thought was a herd of elk ripping thru camp, but a short time after that, more clamor! I stuck my head out to find “thigh deep” snow...and the clamor was tents collapsing!! We had 5 in camp total! After I got my bearings, I shook my 10x10 Bowflex off, shoveled snow away from the base and went about salvaging the other tents the best I could. Later in n the day my brother returned from satellite camp and we went about repairing tents...aside from our base tents, our two satellite tents collapsed as well, (his on him!!). Only my Bowflex survived by unscathed!! I’m a big fan of Kodiak Tents!! Tried and true!!😊👍
I've never camped before, have been shopping around for a tent and decided on getting a cheap two person for less than $80, as it would make sense, BUT off the strength of this video alone the 2 person 6086 has me sold! You're not touching the roof at 5'10" while sitting and you can see the quality of the material. Thank you for this!
I have the 10x14 deluxe w/windows on all sides and double doors. It is so big inside its more like a room instead of a tent. I'm 6ft and love the fact that I only stoop a little going thru the door. Never inside! The spring pole is a great system BUT the tent MUST be secured in order for the tent to work. The inside hanger pouches are ok, nothing great. The bigger of pouches works well on the outside of the tent using the loops provided. The mesh over the windows is excellent. Its very fine mesh,so fine in fact that if you are camping when its hot a light breeze wont come thru the screen mesh. Bring a portable fan. Never a drop of water has made its way into my tent. I have lived in this tent going on 1 1/2 years. I move to the mountains, lake, and lots of desert living. Notice I said living. Thats a big difference from a 3-5 day campout. I live in this tent full time. When you put your tent away be sure the floor is clean. The inside of the roof is white and when you collapse the tent for storage or to move to another site, all the floor dirt and dust is now on the bottom of the roof. When you set up make sure the doors are zipped closed. Its okay to have the zippers down and windows half open (from when you put it away) to make it easier to put up. The suction is pretty strong when putting up the spring poles. You"ll get used to it. The stakes for securing the tent are a joke. If you can get them in easy, good luck if the weather goes bad. I use a battery powered 1/4" drive impact wrench and drive 10" lag bolts with large cut washers to secure the tent. My tent has been in snow, hail storms, thunderstorms with 60 mph gusts and 40mph constant winds ,monsoons(flash flood) and scorching heat(114°) and sub freezing weather. (18°). Only had 1 problem with the zipper on the awning side door and that may have been my fault. Not sure about that and I fixed it anyways. The awning MUST be tipped down with any real amount of rain. It holds so much water that when you push up from the bottom to get rid of the 10 gallon puddle over head, you will get SOAKED from the splash. I have videos of how excellent this tent has performed in a thunderstorm with hail. The water ran under the tent so fast it floated my 100 lb dog! The day after I show the mud/sand line of how high the water got and not a drop of rainwater came inside. Unbelievable but true and video to back it up! See how I cured the anemic stakes and how well the tent performed.People are amazed that Im still in the same tent for more than a year after all the weather and sun its been thru. Its really that good and worth every penny. In very cold weather I use a Mr Heater Big Buddy. With a 5 gallon propane tank (outside the tent) it keeps the tent comfortable on low and will run for 220 hours. That works for me. I provide my own energy via solar power so I can watch TV,charge phones, lightsand run a radio. I pack in my water via reliance 7 gallon stackable water totes. Yes, I have videos on those too. None of my adventure would be possible without the the perfect base camp. The Kodiak Canvass 10x14 tent is the base camp for anyone in my opinion. Here is my disclaimer. I do not endorse any of the products mentioned in my comments for compensation. Its all true and oh,by the way, Im 60 years old and love the tent/camp/outdoor living life. Cheers and buy the 10x14!
Wow! What an incredibly in-depth review. Thanks for sharing. It's interesting that you mentioned that you were living in the tent for a year and 1/2. Some stores will keep them on display for a calendar year outside to prove how rigid they are. Many of the 10' x 10' sizes were sent to Haiti after the earthquake as part of the humanitarian relief project. The intention was that they would live in them for one year. However, we did not hear any feedback from anybody as to how they fared in Haitian weather. But, you mentioning monsoon weather with crazy fast wind gusts and all those details is extremely helpful. We appreciate you sharing that. We would love any photos or links to any videos feel free to share them in the comments. Regarding the stakes, most people love them. If you are camping in very rugged soil, especially clay, I've heard people use lag bolts with the driver. In those instances, they rarely use all of the stakes. Anyway, thanks for sharing.
@@Competitiveedgeproducts I would be happy to share the links to the videos that I have from my channel. Check your possible spam folder as thats where they end up sometimes when they contain a link. Thanks for the response. Zombie Dave
@@lghmstng3 me too!lol!can You image having to take shelter in the car and watch your tent and all getting filled with mud and sand? So glad It was lag bolted down.
Still a lesser form of the original Springbar!I am not knocking Kodiak Canvas at all,but is what it is.Springbar has an economy line that is made with the 3/8 rope hem line, that KC is still lacking!KC just now brought out the steel anchor loops?Yet,foundation is still single point attachment! In other words, every stake is almost by itself! To be fair,I like KC!They can only go so far on the back of Springbar. They need to get over kill on the anchor setup/foundation arrangement, extra loops??!1/2”rope for hemline ?Any one?!
I bought the 10x14 flex VX from these guys and they were awesome. Shipping was fast and free. My wife and I love the tent. Get the big one, seriously you will regret it if you don’t.
Thank you for your comment Tim P. Here is the link to the one you mention: www.competitiveedgeproducts.com/Super-Deluxe-Kodiak-Canvas-Tent-6041VX-10x14-with-tarp-6043-_p_23.html
Wow! This is the first time (ever) that I have watched a youtube video, gone to the site that authored it, and spent event 1$. Will be ordering my Kodiak FlexBow (from your site!) today! Called in yesterday and was impressed by the quality of the phone assistance, he clearly knows his product lines and has personal experience with the product line. My wife would love the Cabin tent, but she felt that the setup time isn't really an option when we're juggling a 6mo old (why we are car camping instead of backpacking for the next year or so!).
I own both the four and six person versions (was fortunate to get them both at a deep discount). These are fantastic if you are driving up to your camp spot; I've used mine in conjunction with 4x4 camping. They're a great option if you have the space to carry a larger tent and are looking for something to camp comfortably with. As an aside, I use an ultra-lightweight one person backpacking tent for ultra distance motorcycle camping, so these are a real treat in comparison to my usual "sleeping bag with a roof". Definitely recommend Kodiak.
Fantastic Presentation and review of these tents. You, Charlie, are a consummate pro and the epitome of tent sales in explaining every detail. I thank you and will surely but my new tent from you.
You do a very complete and sincere presentation. I’m sure you are as happy in your job as you are successful. You obviously are a really nice guy for your neighbors to let you do this video. Lol. Enjoyed it all and you made me want one even though I’m 76 and have never camped.
Hi Charlie - have to say this video was perfect to really see the differences of the tents - you did an outstanding job! You deserve a raise - or at least a nice bonus!
Thanks for your kind words. I thought I was nuts doing a 40 min video in my backyard, but people have seemed to really like it. I'm glad I did and glad you found it helpful. Thanks for your feedback.
Competitive Edge Products, Inc this video really made my husband realize tent camping 🏕 will save us money vs camper & camper insurance so we can travel to some great places!!
Well done enough to make me purchase. If you guys will put this much effort into explaining the product you must have excellent customer service. I will update you after I receive my tent.
My 12 x 12 stove tent and awning withstood 45 mile winds with 65 gusts Yes I am sure my 10 x 14 flex bow would have done as well Thank you for a great product
Bought my Kodiak 8X12 cabin tent from Competitive Edge. Nothing but positives to say they stand behind you for quality and customer support. As i recieved my tent, i noticed fatigue of shipment box, opened to find some small damage which likely resulted from shipping. I sent an email and pic of the damage, and they were quick to respond and sent me a new part to replace damaged piece. I definitely rate this kind of business service a 5 star+! My son now looking to buy one since out of tbe marine corps. He is in awe of the Kodiak tents. Thank you again, Compeyitive Edge!
We are impressed. Two seniors who went camping this year, who froze one night, were soaked out a couple of others and had a problem getting up and out during every night, now know what type of tent they need! Thank you!
Great video. I really appreciate the detailed descriptions of all the features. I will probably buy from you just because of this video - you’re clearly a user of and expert on these tents.
Hi Charlie. You know that without your Kodiak videos I’d be watching hundreds of UA-cam videos in complete frustration. Nobody names their Kodiak tent correctly, if at all. Thank you for helping me decide which model would be correct for me. I have no local stores to view in person so... Thanks! 🙏🏻😁
I have the 8 foot Kodak Canvas truck bed tent, which I love. Super stable in high winds, bone dry, easy for me to put up alone, and looks a bit like a covered wagon. Highly recommend.
This is by far the best video out there on Kodiak tents! I have had my 10 X 14 for a few years now and absolutely loved it. Although I just sold it, I am the exception to what you said... I want to down-size LOL. Kids leaving home :) Looking at the 9X8 or 10X10. You showing the height on the 9X8 may have just sold me! Thanks again and I'll be buying from you soon.
We have this same tent and I love it. These tents are worth every penny. I wish I was as tall as you. I have to lean the middle post over to hook up the loop. You make the most out of every inch of this tent. Excellent setup.
Thanks for your feedback Troy. It's much appreciated. They are an investment as you get what you pay for, but there is hardly such thing as buyers remorse with these. When I got mine about 10 years or so ago I set it up and truly thought that I not only bought a tent, but it's like an emergency shelter. In fact, the local church here sent a ton of these to Haiti after the earthquake to live in for up to one year.
Awesome. I think you hit all of the salient points. I just came back from a 4 day trip using a 4 man Alps. I was dreaming thinking that at 72 I would be fine on my knees most of the time, unable to stand to dress. Well.... a few Ibuprofens later and a couple of days to lick my wounds.....I find myself looking for a better alternative. I am sure I found it. Now...just have to pull together the cash. Love the Kodiak sleeping bags as well.
Thank you for your comments. I love being able to stand up straight and stretch out in a tent. We need to update this video now with a few more products Kodiak has since come out with. Thanks for sharing.
You need two guy ropes with springs and long metal pegs on your awning...drop one corner down slightly for rain....and do a cyclone knot on your ropes its a twist around the pole to stop it lifting up the pole...nice tents
Charlie, I have viewed your video several times. Me and my friends(10 couples) have 12x20 Alaknak tents and I also have a Big Horn. We are beginning to discuss the idea of downsizing to Kodiak tents. I have watched your excellent video tour several times taking note of every detail. The important element that is missing in are evaluation is the weight of each model. We appreciate mobility even though our campsites are for weeks at a time... not weekends. Can you please give us weight.
Thank you for your feedback. I very much regret not mentioning the weight. We do have the weights on the website for each individual item. If you contact us to the website I can send you a list of weights by model number. www.competitiveedgeproducts.com
My 4 person Kodiak tent during a near 24 hour non-stop storm with damaging winds: Rainstorm? What rainstorms? I LOVE MY TENT! Never wavered, NEVER FLOODED!
Thanks for your videos, they were very, very helpful 👍 No , nonsense..And , telling it like it is. 👍 I will be buying the big outfitters tent ⛺️ and the awning. I believe Kodiak is a very honest company. Cause , they don't just talk about a product ? You've showed us they put them through the test. Thanks for sharing your videos. I'm very impressed with your honesty.
Appreciate your videos, one thing I would really like to see is how to properly take down and roll up the 9x12 cabin tent with the awning. Seems there are a lot set up ones but no tear down and pack up. Thanks
have the 10x10, and have been using it at Burningman for 2 years. Man, it is heavy but surprisingly easy to setup and holds strong in the dust wind! the 2-person tent looks really nice.
Awesome. Yeah, that 2-person tent is crazy good in the worst weather. I'm sure that's due to less surface area being so much lower to the ground. Thanks for the feedback. Did you use special stakes at burning man?
@@Competitiveedgeproducts we just used the regular stakes coming with the tent.... Another thing of it is that it does a great job keep the dust outside.
I just got my 6133 with the 0650 wall enclosure and set it up by myself for the first time. I'm VERY pleased with my purchase / investment. It is obviously well made and very roomy. I think it will last a long time and I may even pass it down to one of my kids. :)
Those cabin tents are pretty sweet. As long as you take care of it you should be able to pass it down. I started out with a 10x10 basic and my brother inherited that and they still use it. It's about 12 years old now and has seen many campsites.
I believe the No Seem-um netting gets its name because of the pest nick-named the No See-um. It's smaller than a mosquito so the mesh is woven more tightly in order to block these smaller pests. A major advantage I think!
Yes, you are absolutely correct on that. If you haven't had the experience of those little flying pins hitting your neck, then you're lucky. But, that is true. I refer to it as no-see-um as if the window blends in, which is true, but that's not the reason it was named no-see-um mesh as you point out.
I'm sold. These remind me of our old canvas family tent that our family used for camping in the 50's and 60's. I think I will start with a two man as I like to go camping by myself sometimes. The kids can use the Kelty. Can't wait. Great fully formational video.
@@davidkoeppen3121 I remember an old camping trip to tahoe, it would have been back in the mid 1960's. A rainstorm came in and Dad told us kids "Do Not touch and poke the roof of the tent. So, of course we did. It dripped and leaked all over the place where we Poked the tent.. We never did that again, but we never camped in the rain again either. So funny.
I’m so glad I ran into this video. It’s so hard to find a good tent online and choose. I’ll definitely be ordering mine from competitive edge products.
Glad I watched this. I had pretty much decided on the 9' x 8', but after seeing the two person tent I think I might be able to get by with it. I'm a solo backpacker and car camper, but when I car camp I'd prefer to sleep off the ground in a cot. Looks like a cot will fit into the smaller tent just fine and still give me head room when lying down and also tall enough that I can put a lower profile camp chair inside to get away from bugs. The smaller tent will be easier for me to haul from the car and take up less real estate when I store it away. Thanks for comparing all the different versions.
Outstanding video. Very thorough and I feel like you were giving me a personal walk through. When I do decide to buy a tent it will almost certainly be a Kodiak.
have the 10x14, had the awning rip during some high winds. Called Kodiak and they offered to reimburse me if I took it to a local tent shop to have the awning repaired, I agreed and got it fixed. It was around $100, called Kodiak back and sent them an invoice. I was told I'd have a check coming my way, never saw it and called them back. They keep beating around the bush about it and eventually I gave up, these tents are nice but if you ever have an issue good luck with that "warranty"
brandon young that’s good info. How did the tent hold up in the wind? These tents and accessories are backed up by some really good warranties. It can be inconvenient filing a warranty claim but it’s usually just a photo and a copy of the receipt. Anyway, glad you were taken care of and thanks for sharing.
@@Competitiveedgeproducts I wasn't taken care of, they kept giving me excuses as to why the check wasn't sent out. Honestly the tent held up well, it was in probably 75mph winds and the grommets for the awning ripped out.The wind kicked up while I was away from the tent and I was sure I'd come back to a destroyed tent. The great thing about this tent is anyone who is able to sew thick canvas can repair it, I took mine to Denver Tent Company. I'd still recommend the tent based on the ease of repair, honestly you aren't going to repair anything other than canvas so that's reason enough to buy something like this. Like I said, good stuff but the warranty is about as good as yesterdays news.
@@Competitiveedgeproducts yea they did, thanks for checking into that. Like I said in my original comment these tents are awesome, and I'd still buy another even if they didn't have a warranty at all.
I currently have 2 10x14 tents, and have never been to a campground that I could not use them at. However after looking at these tents, and seeing the much better design of most of the features, I think I am going to get 1 soon. With the walls being more vertical, and having more headroom, it seems larger inside.
Cool innovative tents, I'm from the UK & never seen one of your tents in the flesh, I've had many tents over the years but have now settled with a Danish company called outwell, they cater for all budgets, I've had an outwell troutlake for many many years whitch is polycotton and it's still awesome, I've also got an outwell niagrafalls and an outwell Yosemite falls which both are 100% cotton rip stop, the outwell niagrafalls & Yosemite falls are the best tents money can buy hear in the UK ( priced from $2000 to $3500) although outwell have stopped making them, we believe they stopped making the 100% ripstop tents as they literally last a life time, unfortunately outwell are now using cheaper parts and materials in there high end tents and are losing loyal customers to thrre competitors, which is cool as we all need to have a reason to try other companies gear. Take a look at the reviews for the outwell niagrafalls, Yosemite and Yellowstone tents, theres some great innovative hints and tips. Any way great video and I like the look of your tents, going to do a quick search to see if we have them in the UK.
Dude. . . . .7 kids? Stop. . . . .Now. I'm 1 of 9. You must be robbing banks to pay for the bunch. That 6133 is da bomb. Great presentation all around. Thanks and best of luck to all of you.
Seen many of these tents at Rabbit Stick in Rexburg Idaho this September. Talked to many of the owners. They say, they'll never buy another tent again. Everyone said they loved it. Watched a woman, put one up on under 6 minutes by herself
I can see myself cooking under the awning with a metal tent stove only the pipe would run outside the aweing. I guess it would be 90/10 covered. Still able to capture the heat around the stove outside just find. Boil hot water to keep warm at night in water bottles.
I live in the north west high country. Rain, snow, wind during the winters. I do not have or use a stove in the tent. I have a brick hot box. Brick heated in camp fire. Ive used this system up outside Fairbanks AK at -60 f. Just need a tent with living space and that can stand up to and shed snow. Dry snow not wet. What ya think yours would doo. JMHO
Yes, I think these would work great. The smaller the tent (2-person, 4-person) the stronger they are since there is less surface area for wind to blow against and less roof surface area for snow to accumulate. As long as you make sure too much snow doesn't accumulate by knocking it off you should be good. They keep you dry for sure.
Very educational video, the most comprehensive I can find from UA-cam. Just pre-ordered one from competitive edge website. Looking forward to that tent! I purchased the cabin tent so I can try snow camping. Please post video on how to install stove (stove jack installation) and canvas care as well.
This is a super good review, now there os a new one the grand cabin kodiak i will like you to give us a good explanation about it you are so good on it
The grand cabin is being discontinued and replaced by the lodge tents. www.competitiveedgeproducts.com/kodiak-lodge-tents-and-accessories.html Here's a video that compares the lodge tents that are not shown in this video you are commenting on. Good observation and thank you for your feedback. ua-cam.com/video/K0ebD3Z4tsU/v-deo.html
Excellent and informative video. We have been considering a Kodiak and your video gave us discussion points as to which tent model would best fit (for just the two of us) tent. Thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for an excellent comprehensive comparison! Oh, thank you! Too bad it did not make my decision as to which one for me. Hmmm..laugh, laugh. Question: How do they hold up being raised for an entire summer? Question: SIde-by-side, how do the various models hold up to wind / microbursts> Why do I ask? Because we will be using our for [a] Summer back-yard camping/sleep overs and [b] Camping at Pennsic (in Pennsylvania) for two solid weeks. Generally, a 4-man tent barely serves 1 person with all cooking gear and food, clothing plus archery thrown weapons gear, musical instruments, dance garb, craft projects... Whew!
I love my Kodiac truck tent! Just as well made with great ventilation! But you get what you pay for, it is the most expensive truck tent, but very worth it.
Really having a hard time deciding between the VX and the deluxe 10x14. I like the sturdiness look of no windows on the deluxe. But having the ability to vent 360 with the VX is nice also. In hot summer camping do you find the deluxe hot even though you can open front and rear windows? Choices...choices
Yes, it is hot and hot summer camping with or without windows. I went on a camp out with my brothers-in-law and our sons and we had one of the VX and we had one of the basics and I thought the VX was warm when we were unpacking our items. And then I helped with the basic and went inside and was definitely hotter. Both were hot. In the nighttime, though the difference in heat is a lot more noticeable. Since you can get a breeze on the VX regardless of which direction the wind is blowing the tent is more likely to cool down faster. But, yes to directly answer the question both of them get pretty hot. Any tent in the noonday sun is going to bake. If that doesn't answer your question or if you have any more questions please let me know.
I bought the 10x14 deluxe before they came out with the vx and I really think I would like the vx better because the no see-um mesh makes the airflow an issue sometimes. Not to mention it always seemed that the wind was blowing in the wrong direction. Also there were times I would hear something go bump in the night and I wished I could shine a light out in the dark but there was no window.
Well thanks for the info. I think now I just need to figure out if I want the swag or the two person. I like having enough room to put my gear and bags.
I bought the 10’ x 14’ flex bow deluxe a few years ago. I love that tent, it is always popular among my friends when we go camping. I highly recommend it. That being said if I had known about the cabin tent with the canopy at the time I would have purchased it instead for my hunting trips. Please start installing stove pipe holes on the tents it is my only complaint.
Agreed! That would be awesome. There is no basic and no super deluxe vx - just the middle option right now. Hope that changes in the future and the product line expands.
That cabin tent reminds me of my parents old tent that we had growing up. That thing was still going strong when my parents finally threw it out. Now I just have to debate between the cabin tent with the awning or the flexible 10x14 for my family. Quick question… does/can the canopy on the cabin tent separate from the tent? I could see for camping with the whole family using it, but maybe not so much if it’s just me and my kids and maybe for a day or 2. Thanks for the informative video and thanks for hopefully answering my question!
@@Competitiveedgeproducts haven’t purchased yet, although I think the 12x9 with canopy would be the most versatile. We live in CA and a lot of campgrounds have very small camp pads. The 12x12 is tempting though too, but I assume the 12x9 would be easier for me to set up by myself.
@@sille80 Yeah, you assume correctly. The 12x9 would be easier/faster to set-up by yourself. It's basically pounding in stakes without all the guy ropes.
WOW amazing presentation. You literally made me want to buy every single one of these tents LOL. I will be buying the 12x9 cabin deluxe tent. thanks a million for this awesome video. I do have a question. I do track days and that's the main reason to buying this tent since they usually let us camp out at the track the night before, my question is there a way to set this up on pavement and how would you recommend securing it since staking it isn't an option on pavement. thanks again hopefully you answer since you seemed very knowledgeable.
Serious question here. Can you suffocate if all openings are closed, doors, windows, vents? I just purchased the 10x10 basic and noticed the suffocation tag inside the tent. I do not burn anything inside like heater or anything. It's just me in the tent. I will be camping in 8-15 degree F, weather. Do I have to leave a window cracked? I ask because I thought canvas was "breathable" so I have the thought that it is not airtight.
They are very breathable and most people do not crack a window in it. It's important obviously if you are using a heater to keep a window cracked, but also if you are getting pounded with snow and ice the tent becomes less breathable and makes it even more important to crack a window. The tent is treated with a "dry" waterproofing treatment unlike the old army tents that were waxy or had a film on them. That helps them breathe, but some customers go a little overboard and buy extra waterproofing treatments and depending on what you are using it can also make the tent less breathable. If you ever need to retreat it years and years down the line we recommend Kiwi brand Camp Dry silicone based. Hope that helps.
Very informative video. I could use some advice, because my Kodiak flex-bow 10x10 collapsed due to heavy snowfall a few weeks ago. Snow's mostly melted now, but the tent is flat on the ground, wet & not very easy to handle. Is the tent ruined? Is there a way to clean it up without damaging the treated canvas? Thanks for any suggestions or recommendations.
I doubt the tent is ruined, but it's hard to say. The first thing to do is to rescue it from the water and dry it out. Then, you should be able to tell whether any seams or what other damage there may be and take it from there. There are replacement pole kits, patch kits, etc. Worst case scenario you can get a complete new tent body which is much cheaper than buying a whole new tent. I'm hopeful that your tent body is okay though. They are pretty forgiving. If it collapsed you may have a pole that needs to be replaced though. Please keep us posted.
@@Competitiveedgeproducts Thanks for your response. The daunting task of drying this tent out has me perplexed. Any practical suggestions re: drying process/technique?
I hope someone who has used the 2 person tent can chime in, because our testing at 40mph did nothing to it. If I were to make an educated guess based on experience and what I've seen with the larger tents I think it could easily withstand 40mph-60mph.
That was a very helpful video, I just ordered the 9x12 cabin tent, the walls were never mentioned as optional. Am i able to call and get information on the walls that velcro to the actual tent, would that heavy floor cover the new tent floor area? Thank you and Blessings!!
I'd call. I just bought the same setup and the walls were an option in a drop down menu. On sale currently for 39.98 (when bought with the tent). They have a floor covering for the 12x9 on the website.
Great vid. Thank you! For the 10x14VX, how do folks recommend anchoring this tent on soft sands? Wondering if the design of the anchor points on the Kodiak would allow for a wide surface snow/sand stake - the kind that you can also use a deadman application.
Very good questions. One major use for these tents is the Burning Man Festival that takes place every summer in the Nevada desert. In cases like that, it can be rock-solid dirt or loose sand. The 12" stakes work fine in most of those cases. I've camped on the beach a few times and didn't need any special anchors. Sometimes people will use lag bolts and bring their own driver if it's going to be rock solid clay. In the snow, dead man anchors could definitely work and you'd need to create a minimum of four (one for each corner) as a minimum to keep the tent upright.
How does the 6 person cabin with awning 6133 hold up in high winds? I'm shopping for a tent for camping in Baja on surf trips with the family. I've seen some videos of the flexbows hold their own in the wind but I really like the ridged awning that the 6133 has.
Yeah, we need to do a high-wind demo on that. It holds up great with the exception of the wall enclosure. In moderately high wind, say, 20 mph awning portion holds up pretty good and the wall enclosure holds up well too. I'd say once you hit 40 you have to hike up the bottom of the wall enclosure to relieve wind pressure. The awning is still fine and so is the tent, but the wall enclosure that velcro's on optionally has to go in high winds. I've only had to do that once ever so I'm speaking from personal experience. Anyone else with the cabin tent have any experience in high wind (around 40mph)? Please share.
@@Competitiveedgeproducts Thanks. When we are in Baja we always know which way the wind is going to blow so setting that tent up so that the awning is on the downwind side gives us a place to sit and hangout using the tent as a wind block. That's why we want to know how it holds up in the wind. I used to have a sprinter van and sold it to get a truck. Now looking to get a solid shelter.
I think I may have picked up an earlier model Kodiak. It is like the the 10x10 with the top side vents, same color,(except for the bar sleeves are the same color as the top) and plain sides without side windows, however, my tent is 9' 10" x 9' 10" I'll see how this works for me. These look super nice. 10x14... Hmmm maybe later.
I have no doubt this is an excellent product and I plan on buying one this spring. The 10x10. My question though is the canvas looks rather thin. What weight is it? I'm more used to 12+ oz canvas for clothes and bags
The canvas is thick and does a great job. We haven't had any issues with them in the 10 plus years on the market. Ceiling Material: 10 oz Hydra-shield cotton canvas. Wall Material: 8.5 oz Hydra-Shield cotton canvas. Floor Material: 16 oz vinyl. Polyester reinforced.
How do these tents handle cold winter weather? What’s the lowest do you think the temperature can get before it’s uncomfortable to be in? I live in Wisconsin and it can get pretty deep into the negatives here.
That's a good question, but really the sleeping bag you use would be the biggest factor in how warm/cold you are. The tents keep you dry from rain and snow which helps keep you more comfortable and dry, but we get people that use these year-round in Alaska making sure they have good quality sleeping bags in addition to a solid shelter like these.
I have a 10x10 flexbow. I've had it out in some pretty good thunderstorms, lots of wind and rain. I've not had any water get in, except for what ever water that dripped off of me. As far as the wind, it wobbles a little bit, but not terrible.
Man, awesome job 👏🏼 thank you for taking the time to set all of those up and do a well articulated, thorough review/walkthrough. This video is a gold standard of how a UA-cam walkthrough should be done.
Thanks for your kind comment. Definitely makes it motivating to continue videos like this. :)
This is what honest salesmanship looks like. He’s not even trying to sell us this product, he’s just explaining its benefits and how much he likes them. Thank you! I’m getting the 10x10 VX.
Thank you for your kind feedback.
This is by miles the best Kodak tent review on the internet. Pro quality.
Thank you so much. Hope it helped!
Great chatting with you my friend. I'm glad I could help. If you have any questions, just holler.
Great review ! Just purchased the Kodiak with a bundle ! Perfect timing ! We are going to key west through the gray smoke mountains then to the Elk festival this fall ! THANK TOU FOR THE INCREDIBLE REVIEW !
You are so welcome! Let me know if you have any questions or inquiries I'm so glad I could help!

For the record we are not paying Gary O for his review :) Great review! Thanks for sharing!
Competitive Edge Products, Inc - But you sure can if you want!!👍😜.... honestly, just great tents!
Thank you for your reply so glad it was helpful.
I have the 10x14 deluxe w/windows on all sides and double doors. It is so big inside its more like a room instead of a tent. I'm 6ft and love the fact that I only stoop a little going thru
the door. When you set up make sure the doors are
zipped closed. Its okay to have the zippers down and windows half open (from when you put it away) to make it easier to put up. The suction is pretty strong when putting up the
spring poles. The
awning MUST be tipped down with any real amount of rain.
Zombie Dave

I was wondering about the 10x 14 for a couple. You don't find it too big?
Competitive Edge Products, Inc - it was great and it helped push me over the edge to press the button. Should have it in a few days!

Awesome to hear its holding up well!
Just bought my 10x14 yesterday from competitive edge. Excellent video
That is so awesome to hear! Thanks!
Hi Charlie. You know that without your Kodiak videos I’d be watching hundreds of UA-cam videos in complete frustration. Nobody names their Kodiak tent correctly, if at all. Thank you for helping me decide which model would be correct for me. I have no local stores to view in person so... Thanks! 🙏🏻😁
Ben Stolen thanks for that feedback. So glad that was helpful.
I have the 8 foot Kodak Canvas truck bed tent, which I love. Super stable in high winds, bone dry, easy for me to put up alone, and looks a bit like a covered wagon. Highly recommend.
Those truck tents are pretty sweet. Wish I could have shown one in this demo. They allow you to drive and camp in unconventional locations.
I have used my 10x10 in rain, wind, and heavy snow with new problems. Great tents
The best video on Kodiak tents. Thanks a lot
I haven't even received my 10 x 14 yet and now I want the two smallest ones too!

Thank you for the video I've been looking and thought I had picked on until I stumbled onto these Kodiaks. I'm changed my mind!
Finally found some "real" tents! Great job going through the tent selections.
Mate when someone says "REAL tents" I automatically assume your talking about your environment, but if you want a true tent I suggest making your own
Appreciate your videos, one thing I would really like to see is how to properly take down and roll up the 9x12 cabin tent with the awning.

@crabjay Which version do you have? If you have the VX, how do the extra windows hold up against playa dust?
Great video, Charlie. Just learned about these tents and you hit every point I was interested in!
Awesome. Glad to be of help. Thank you for the feedback.
They are even better than the old canvas tents because they don't wick water if you touch the inside like the old ones did.
So glad it was helpful. We appreciate your business.
We have the 10x14 and I love it , best tent we ever owned
Crageton - thanks for sharing. How long have you had yours?
This fine 2018 review video is just what I needed; best one of the web...I just bought the 10x10 from you guys. Thanks.
Thanks Chris - glad it was helpful. If you have any questions let me know. I'm happy to help. Charley
have the 10x14, had the awning rip during some high winds.
@@brandonyoung181 let me check with them and see what I can find out.
Brandon, I heard back from kodiak and they are going to reach out to you if they have not already.
That's really something coming from the owner of Davis Tents! Nice comment.

@@Competitiveedgeproducts thanks
Very educational video, the most comprehensive I can find from UA-cam. Just pre-ordered one from competitive edge website. Looking forward to that tent! I purchased the cabin tent so I can try snow camping. Please post video on how to install stove (stove jack installation) and canvas care as well.
Thanks for watching!
This is a super good review, now there os a new one the grand cabin kodiak i will like you to give us a good explanation about it you are so good on it
The grand cabin is being discontinued and replaced by the lodge tents.

Here's a video that compares the lodge tents that are not shown in this video you are commenting on. Good observation and thank you for your feedback.

Thanks a lot buddy..great to have them all compared at once!
great rundown on the lineup. Really been enjoying the truck tent I ordered from you guys last month. And my wife also enjoys the cabin tent ;)
Wow, you've got two tents. How have they held up? Have you been in some bad weather yet?
Ordered a 10x10 deluxe vx just now ! Can't wait to get it the wife's gonna kill me lol
I hope she didn't kill you and maybe you can give me some feedback on the tent? I am looking to get the same one. :)
Mark DuBerry are you still alive? 😂
@@erikawoods8975 he was killed
🤣☺️
Excellent and informative video. We have been considering a Kodiak and your video gave us discussion points as to which tent model would best fit (for just the two of us) tent. Thank you!
Awesome! Thanks for taking a moment to leave that feedback. If you have any questions just let me know. I'm happy to help.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for an excellent comprehensive comparison! Oh, thank you!
Too bad it did not make my decision as to which one for me. Hmmm..laugh, laugh.
Question: How do they hold up being raised for an entire summer?
Question: SIde-by-side, how do the various models hold up to wind / microbursts>
Why do I ask? Because we will be using our for
[a] Summer back-yard camping/sleep overs and
[b] Camping at Pennsic (in Pennsylvania) for two solid weeks.
Generally, a 4-man tent barely serves 1 person with all cooking gear and food, clothing plus archery thrown weapons gear, musical instruments, dance garb, craft projects... Whew!
Ok buddy, you've done it now, the neighborhood association will be in touch
I love my Kodiac truck tent! Just as well made with great ventilation! But you get what you pay for, it is the most expensive truck tent, but very worth it.
Thank you for your comment. They are definitely an investment.
Very informative...thank you. Need to let my husband view it before deciding which one to buy.
Well thanks for the info. I think now I just need to figure out if I want the swag or the two person. I like having enough room to put my gear and bags.
Thank you for your comment.
The stove and flu kit are definitely being considered. I'll keep you posted.
Thank you for such a comprehensive comparison showing! 👊🏻
Great presentation and an incredible Speaker great job Competitive Edge.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank-you, for your time. 🇨🇦😊
Excellent video
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching.
Thank u for you review. Excited to get these tents and go camping!!!
If only the 4 person came in a VX model! That'd be my perfect tent!
Agreed! That would be awesome. There is no basic and no super deluxe vx - just the middle option right now. Hope that changes in the future and the product line expands.
Awesome video, thank you so much! I’m leaning toward the 10’ x 14’ tent!
Amazing!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching.
I'm sorry for the delay in responding. What did you end up doing and are you happy with your choice?
Always had my mind set on one day getting a Psycone tent but that first tent looks really nice
@@Competitiveedgeproducts Yes this does help. I am excited to get out and enjoy this beast! Thank you.
If u wish to speed up the suffocation process get a hose pipe onto your car exhaust and get it into the tent.
Finally I someone with answers THANKYOU Michigan
Thank you for your comment.
Great video. Thank you for being so thorough. 👍👍
I like the 6 person cabin with awning.
Look like very good tents. Can you tell me how much wind (mph), the # 6098 can withstand? Thank you
I hope someone who has used the 2 person tent can chime in, because our testing at 40mph did nothing to it. If I were to make an educated guess based on experience and what I've seen with the larger tents I think it could easily withstand 40mph-60mph.
Two clips to attach too the big poles on both sides of the 10x14 flex bow, Would open that tent up big time.
We appreciate your feedback.
If I get one or more of ur tents, & it's looking good for that, it will be cuz of ur videos. Good job 👍🏻
Great vid.
Thanks!
Thank you for your comments.
I just bought the 12x12 for snow camping, cant wait to get a stove and camp out in the middle of nowhere
Ok thank you
These are the best tents ......I have the same wife issue she loves them.
Loved this video. I do have one question how does the flex bow 6 person tents hold up in extreme wind?
I have a 10x10 flexbow. I've had it out in some pretty good thunderstorms, lots of wind and rain. I've not had any water get in, except for what ever water that dripped off of me. As far as the wind, it wobbles a little bit, but not terrible.
