FYI the "storm" that you mentioned in 1859 is known as the Royal Charter or Great storm which precipitated Captain Robert FitzRoy, who was in charge of the Meterological Office at the time, brought in the first gale warning service in 1860 to prevent similar tragedies. My Brighthelmstoner dad taught me long lining and, in the 1960s, I used the strongest and biggest hooks & tackle that I could afford to try and snare a conger eel in the remains of the Chain Pier. But something's strength defeated my pocket money and there was only the anchorage, around a stump, left!
