Calling for Engarde's guilty verdict is the most responsible thing for Phoenix to do, but seeing Phoenix and Miles talking like "well guess you're dead now" and Engarde objecting to his own acquittal is just SO satisfying to see

Yeah, for Phoenix guilty is better, but I feel that for Engarde's story it's better to give him not guilty. He's always gotten what he wanted, and up until this point he wanted to get a not guilty verdict. But now... Now a guilty verdict is a much better alternative than a not guilty one, one he will beg for. And for the first time in his life, not just in spite of but because of his callous, dirty tricks, he will not be getting what he wants in a way that will cost him everything.

when i first played through this game, something i was really blown away by was the back and forth between phoenix and edgeworth in the final case. edgeworth being made aware of maya's desperate situation and cooperating with us to pass the discussion back and forth to buy time really solidified the newfound sense of camaraderie between him and phoenix while also being stressful in all the best ways.

Yes, Franziska gets a really hard rep. Like, is she really that much more of a clown than anyone else in the game? Why does she get the special focus when the only normal person on cast is the protagonist? And that's only after he passed the bar; college Phoenix was a nimrod!

@@swishfish8858 Probably because there's a line past which whipping people crosses from being "funny slapstick" to "committing assault" that exists somewhere before making someone actually fall unconscious that one can't go back after crossing, and despite crossing it she never apologizes nor is ever so much as called out for it, let alone punished for it, and she keeps being on that side of the line even after developing as a character.
As far as "silly character quirks" go, Franny's is probably the one with the least widespread appeal. It took me a real long time to warm up to her and even now I really wish she'd grow out of committing assault on a regular basis.

One thing you I think was forgotten or at least should have been included your analysis. Franziska became everything she hated about Edgeworth. She hated Edgeworth for running away, just for her to do the same exact thing. She hated him for helping the enemy, just for her to march proudly back into the courtroom with the one thing that would save Phoenix. She hated him for showing weakness in the court, just for her to be floored by the end of Big Top. And most importantly, she hated Edgeworth for giving up his win record, his most defining trait: Just for her to throw away her whip, her most defining trait. It's some beautiful irony that no other character really replicates in AA.

Turnabout Big Top is such a bummer. There’s so much potential that comes from a murder at the circus, and by extension the character dynamics (Regina’s sheltered mindset, literally everyone hating Max, Acro’s murderous intent accidentally killing the man he respected the most, etc.), but they just don’t build on a whole lot. Instead we spend a majority of it focusing on a creepy love triangle and listening to Moe’s multiple joke testimonies

Definitely agree. Some small changes would have helped the case a lot, a big one aging up Regina. It would have made the love triangle a lot less uncomfortable and made the whole “she should be taking this seriously and not be so happy and childish” have more weight and not just feel like ganging up on a 16 year old for her own special way of coping.

This is precisely how I feel about it. If you look deeply, the case has some incredibly interesting themes and a pretty solid mystery (albeit with a smidge of shaky logic), and an interesting anchor to this absurd cast in Moe - and not many people talk about it.
...But why would one notice that when Moe's testimony in court is agonizing to play through, the investigation segments have one of the most droning tracks to hear on end in the series, and Regina is the center of some of the absolutely creepiest character dynamics I've ever seen???
It's honestly JFA's identity in one case. Some very interesting bits in an incredibly flawed package. It's a bummer when the worst part about the case could've been avoided entirely...

The p3dophilia doesn't really show up until the last third and that god-awful Moe trial segment only lasted for like two testimonies. Maybe your hatred for those elements occupy more of your mind than the rest of the case, making them look like they take up more space than they actually do?
Really the worst part of the case for my money is the cape. The magical, sniper-accurate falling cape that HAPPENED to pin itself to the fucking bust at the perfect angle during the perfect moment. How the Hell is anyone supposed to have figured that out without help?!

Depending on how much the player finds Max & Bat's interest distracting, yeah it's totally a personal opinion whether it overshadows the rest of the case or not.
But Ben/Trilo? 31 is a year off from *double her age* and imo NOTHING about him is plot-relevant enough to keep his ass from being a waste of space. Money needed to steal a shiny thing, but the ring could've been any random item (Regina's wand prop idk).

You can keep every plot/investigation beat the same that way, even Max and Trilo’s fight, and even find an opportunity for some humor - maybe Phoenix assumes there’s some romantic interest, to the men’s shock, who are like ew she’s 16 that’s weird, she’s just very talented

Realistically, I don’t think anything is going to make the stuff with Trillo any better, aside from just not including him. (It’s a grown man pursuing someone at least a decade younger, which is still creepy) And her relationships with Bat and Max become more questionable rather than straight-up illegal. Not a perfect solution as there’s still some iffy stuff, but it erases the whole “Adult men preying on a 16 year old child” stuff.

    • @dan_man3087
      @dan_man3087 Рік тому +37

@@missing_name To be fair, the devil lies in between the lines: just technically, almost no-one out of three "suitors" are "in love" with Regina in the fullest sense of that word. Max is mostly viewed her as an accessory to his beautiful... i mean, *fabulous* self for some time(something akin to "we'll look good together, if nothing else" type of marriage), Bat had nothing more than more or less innocent crush on her, and Ben don't like Regina in a romantic sense(he mentions something along those lines when arguing with Trilo about marriage) - he may *act* and *perform* with the Trilo who's a polar opposite of the Ben himself, but in the real life Ben doesn't actually care for Regina. So technically, first one is acting more as an arrogant jerk, second one acting much more innocent than people perceive him(mostly because of the situation with other two guys) and the third one mostly practicing his routine and playing an act for Regina, if nothing else.
The main issue is Regina's age. We should address that the game is in Japanese origin, where the consent age was MUCH lower until just recently(or they only considering it just now) - just 13 years old. That's the main reason why Regina being 16 is more or less normal in the original setting, but grating to many others outside of Japan.
So in conclusion, i think that the main "love triangle\square" should remain as is(maybe a slight adjustments here and there to flesh out the points i talked about earlier even more). But i do agree that localizers should have adapted Regina's age to more western standards and upped it at least to the legal 18 years old. That wouldn't be much of a problem to do so.

I hope it spurs other creators to do similar reviews, however this one has so much love and research put into it that I doubt it can be topped.

Whatever measures taken, in Maya's mind at that moment, she failed, and her body did the murder.

Something that I really love about the narrative of this game in particular is how it lulls you into a false sense of security and routine. As mentioned in the video, we’ve defended every client up this point and acquitted people who are actually innocent, but in this game especially they make the second and third case killers somewhat sympathetic on purpose. Excluding the first case since it doesnt really fit the theming I have in mind (and it’s just generally my least favorite intro case in the series), Mimi Miney and Acro both commit seriously messed up murders, however they give you enough information on their backstories and motivations that even if you can’t forgive them for what they did, you can understand how they got to the point of committing murder.
So when you get to the fourth case and you’re learning all about Adrien’s co-dependency, her traumatic backstory, and everything else, the game has instilled it in you up to this point that yeah, even the extremely traumatized and sympathetic characters aren’t safe from being the murderer. I love the way that the game uses our preconceived notions about defendants and criminals to completely mess with our perception of both Engarde and Adrien in this case. It’s part of the reason why Adrien is my favorite non-main ace attorney character.

One thing I really love about this game is how it changes client and killer roles in this game. In the first game it's pretty cut and dry that the biggest asshole is the killer (Sahwit, Redd White, Vasquez, Von Karma, Gant) and that your clients are all fairly nice people with the exception of Lana and kind of Edgeworth. In this game the killers are a lot more sympathetic and while you can't agree with their actions you feel sad that they got to such an extreme point. Mimi and Acro stick with me so much because I liked that their motives for killing aren't just "someone got in my way so I killed them." Acro especially gets me when he says he's just a murderer because you can tell his grief and anger towards Regina has turned him into a man he doesn't want to be. I also like Max a lot because he's the first client IMO that's just a total asshole and I would believe he did do it. One of the reasons I actually really like Big Top is because Max, the guy everyone knows is an asshole, is the innocent one and Acro, the seemingly nicest and most caring one, is the killer. This game really makes Phoenix job a lot more interesting than in the first game where he was just always with the nicest people and against the worst kinds of people.
This leads to Farewell, My Turnabout (my favorite case of the trilogy) where he actually defends someone who isn't really innocent and he juggles with what he should do, especially when Maya is at stake. Engarde's evil personality really through me because after Max I thought his secret was gonna make him a jerk but he'd still be innocent but with his twist it really pushes Phoenix and makes the series so much more interesting. It helps that Max was a pretty bad person to make us believe that Engarde could be dealing in some shady business and it's why I think Big Top has more importance than Case 3's like Samurai

Unfortunately that isn't exactly reflected in the way the game treats Max's actions, so whatever message is supposed to come through whichever way you go, it's conveyed very messily. Mixed feelings about that entire case.

He also likely didn't discipline her enough, since she didn't face any consequences for her actions, and otherwise she would have been self-aware enough to the extent of which her "prank" would be fatally dangerous, and she would at least feel some guilt over her actions.
Marcie brings it up at the start, but it is a shame that Pearl isn't more present during Turnabout Big Top. We could have had interactions between Pearl and Regina, and there would have been such a stark parallel between how these two girls were sheltered by their parents. • @cometgravity
      @cometgravity Рік тому +30

i've heard some people suggest that russell was in fact not okay with max and trilo/ben wanting to date his daughter since we never actually hear it from his mouth and all we have to rely on is max claiming after russell died that he had his blessing to marry regina. this has no actual evidence supporting it and is really only a pipe dream that offers some peace of mind (because who wants to accept that this dude was letting grown men creep on his teenage daughter) but like, take it as you will lol.
also with acro, it's weird because i really do appreciate his tragic story and eventual graceful admission of guilt, they're very striking and there aren't many aspects of big top that work for me aside from those. but they sort of fall flat when i keep returning to the fact that he...had a murderous grudge against a child?? he wanted to kill a CHILD?? the general concept of misdirected rage as a result of a tragic accident leading to a misguided attempt at revenge is very compelling, but i can't really take it at face value when the target of said revenge is a minor, and a very naive one at that. it's like we're supposed to feel bad for acro (and i do, to an extent) and accept his targeting of regina as like, a somewhat reasonable response to the situation. he acknowledges his own mistakes and poor decisions in the end but it just feels awkward to consider the fact that this grown man's first reaction to what happened was to look at this dumb innocent teenage girl and go "yes she needs to die"

    • @PipeGuy64Bit

@@cometgravity Honestly my basis for thinking Russell Berry was okay with multiple men wanting to date his daughter was partly from the fact he raised his daughter into having an extremely naive worldview for a girl that's 16 so I assumed his world view was at least somewhat naive too.
I couldn't help but be so hung up on Acro's motive especially for the fact he could've talked about it to Regina herself or Russell but it seems it was never mentioned whether or not he tried talking about how he feels about the whole incident to anyone. Also I found it weird how nobody brings up this would've emotionally destroyed Russell which is a pretty messed up thing for Acro to do to the man took him and his brother in. Also knowing everything that happens in that case, Acro could've easily been labeled as the only suspect if he actually succeeded in dropping the bust on Regina. Not to mention that Moe would've seen the bust being pulled up without a cape and it would've been immediately game over for Acro before the body was discovered. Though despite having an extremely shortsighted plan that backfired in the most tragic way possible for him, Acro isn't the worst sympathetic villain since that title goes to a certain culprit in the sequel trillogy.

Every game is given a slightly different tone due to their musical identity that allows them to stand out and feel recognizable. JFA might be one of my least favorites over all, but it's undeniable that it has its own distinct energy. Some of these tracks are so iconic it's honestly surprising that they're original to this game.

It’s my favorite main series version of the theme for sure, but I think my overall favorite is the one from GAA. It has an enormous amount of gravitas to it.
Also the Spirit of Justice one, but that comes down to a very specific moment in that game so I think it’s less the music and more the context I think of there.

Honestly the Pursuit themes in JFA and AJ are some of my favourite Pursuit themes in the game's series. I get a lot of people saying that with the former the tension it brings makes it feel like it was only made for the Engarde case but I really like it overall because instead of invoking that sense of triumph, it's more of a tense resignation to keep on pushing even though you may not like what you find out at the end of it. Overtaken is loud, bombastic and quite fast paced, pairing well with Apollo as a character, crying shame it was used so rarely as compared to the Tell The Truth theme which might as well have taken over every court case there as much as I like it as well.

I feel this was a poor translation job. Not saying I in any way endorse this, I do not. But in japan it’s not uncommon for 16 to be the “coming of age” age. It’s above the legal age of consent. I think they were supposed to age Regina up to 18, but forgot. That said, how and where it was written, regardless of how it should have been translated, isn’t as creepy or unusual as it is in the English version

The themes of working together and bonds in the final case- heck the whole game is f-ing spectacular. Every case sort of has that theme. It was Maggey's bond with Dustin resulting in the special glove that was able to do Wellington in, and it was his ties with the gang of criminals that drove him to commit murder in the first place. It was Mini's bond with her sister and watching her die is the thing that destroyed her life leading her to work together with Morgan to pull off that murder. It was Acro's monkey that was able to get him the bust to cause the murder and the whole circus not being able to communicate properly is what drove him to murder in the first place. And the final case, oh my god the final case.
The thing that does Matt Engarde is his inability to trust anyone but himself, and the working together of literally everyone we met so far. Engarde was only done in because he couldn't trust Shelly. If he didn't make that blackmail tape, he would've gotten away with the whole thing, but Engarde is just such a conniving selfish person he literally couldn't imagine being able to trust an assassin because "that's how the world works." But he's wrong, and his downfall is a united force. Phoenix and Edgeworth figuring out the whole thing, Franziska getting the last pieces of evidence from Gumshoe, Gumshoe who was hot on De Killer's trail the whole time, Pearl recognizing Shoe and being able to keep channeling Mia throughout the whole trial, Mia being able to give information about Maya's location, and Maya channeling Mia in the first place. Everyone is working together to bring this one despicable man down and everyone plays an important part. (AND IT HANDLES THIS A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN A CERTAIN CASE COUGH COUGH TURNABOUT ABLAZE) This even ties back into Phoenix sort of developing a martyr complex and him learning that he alone can't save everyone. The final piece isn't him presenting a piece of evidence to the court to turn an entire case around, it's him presenting a piece of evidence to an assassin to get his help. He says it himself in the intro, he is just a lawyer, but he alone is just a lawyer. With all of his friends and allies he has made along the way, he is more than just a lawyer. He's a bright beacon of justice. Truely, a phoenix rising from the ashes.

Franziska is the only one that truly cared about Adrian's feelings and the importance of keeping her secret. She told Adrian not to say anything in court not because she wanted to be an asshole, but because she genuinely wanted to protect her. She even reaches out to her after the trial. I went to a university where my major (computer science) was considered part of the engineering program, so one of my graduation requirements was an "engineering ethics" course. The midterm and final "exams" were basically just "pick a couple of these ethical dilemma prompts and write about what you think would be the Right Thing To Do in this scenario." However, we also had the option of *submitting* a dilemma prompt for others to answer, and if the professor accepted and used it then we'd get credit for that and not have to answer one. (The idea being that the point of the class was to get us thinking about ethics, not to teach us a set of universal Right Answers and Wrong Answers.)
I took this course in the spring of 2007, which means the North American release of Justice for All came out right at the beginning of the semester, and apparently I wasn't the only Ace Attorney in the class, because one of the dilemmas we had to choose from for the final was literally just 2-4. The prompt even referred to the game by name.

Personally, I really didn’t like her going through this game and her antics with the whip grated on my nerves. So between having only two good cases and a prosecutor that frustrates people, there’s valid reasons to call this one the weakest of the trilogy. One of the things I found really interesting when it came to the later games is that Max kinda gets forgotten as the very first magician character in the series to be introduced, and is supposed to be pretty famous if not the most famous iirc. The fact that this doesn't get brought up or mentioned at all whenever the Troupe Gramarye (or Arumajiki depending on your preferences) business goes into full swing is probably one of the biggest missed chances in my opinion to do some connected storytelling between the OG trilogy and The AJ trilogy. Though it may just be possible that Shu wanted to forget about Turnabout Big Top for a number of reasons and just chose not to do so.

You say that Manfred Von Karma didn't go to the hospital only to avoid the humiliation of surgery but I always thought the reason he didn't go to surgery was so he didn't have anything to implicate himself in the crime. This is because the bullet being lodged in his shoulder is the only thing placing him at the crime scene so he decided not to leave a paper trail with the hospital, not expecting that years later that connection would be revealed by a scrappy attorney with a metal detector.

Bit of a slip on my part, lol, my intention wasn't to say that was the _only reason_ he didn't go, just contrasting the differences in situations. It was that perfectionist nature that led him to those circumstances, he wouldn't have had to hide a murder if he didn't feel the need to commit one, which was spurred from that "stain" on his record from Gregory, etc. If that makes sense! Franziska doesn't have to hide a murder, of course, but while she hasn't taken her losses well, she didn't continue further down that path, the bullet is just a good aesthetic representation of that diverging path to me. Could've probably made that clearer, though.

If you try to solve it from a physics angle, I agree its unreasonable to expect someone to come to that conclusion.
However, I do believe it's solvable given what you already know. You know that Max took off his his cloak when talking to the ringmaster, you know that someone was seen walking in the cloak towards the crime scene, you know that Moe saw what looked like a cloaked Max floating up in the air, and you know it was Acro dropping the bust that killed the victim.
I actually remember putting it together as a kid and feeling kind of proud, but I do concede that a lot of people wouldn't jump to that conclusion.

I love Justice for All. I've maintained it's a rare instance where its parts are greater than the sum of them. Part of this is because I played T&T significantly later and spoiled. In PAL regions, it came out AFTER Apollo Justice (and actually never did come out in Australia on the DS) but I think 2-2 and 2-4 are top ten cases. I also really enjoy 2-3 for its sympathetic villain. I also think its cross examination allegro is the best in the series. Glad to hear such a comprehensive analysis of it.

I’m forcing my boyfriend to play the trilogy with me, since I’ve been hyperfixated for years, and these videos have been super helpful for me. They’re helping me jog my memory so I seem cool and like I actually know what I’m doing lol. Thanks so much for the videos they’re incredible so far!

Imma just say two things: not mentioning how oddly cute Franziska looks in Gumshoe's coat feels like a crime, specially with her smug-ass grin about coming in clutch
And secondly, God, Shelly De Killer's policy about traitorous clients really is pulling a symbiote Amazing Spiderman
("SHOCKEEEEEEEER, I'LL HUNT YOU TO THE ENDS OF THE EAAAAAAAARTH")

Man, Umineko music really fits amazingly in the moments that really deserves it. 7 weights and Yomitsu Hirasaka Corruption RULES in the both parts that were used RULES (favorite tracks btw)
This video served as a refresher, mainly that Justice for all rules with that last case and the second one (i'm comfortable into lying to myself into believing that Big top turnabout was an anime only arc, especially after... That love triangle thingie). It's a good game, even if it gets more often than not overshadowed (with i feel justified reasons even when the highs of this game are very high) by T&T.
We pogging with another fantastic video 💪

One thing you haven't noted on that I think is pretty important is
    The title
Because its the theme of the game.
Apart from the filler tutorial case, the three cases in this case are all about justice and how...it wasn't delivered. Ini was the true victim of the case and forced into a horrible situation while Grey was despicable, there were no real culprits in Big Top, only victims and people who suffered. In both of those instances, no justice was delivered by condemning both Ini and Acro to die. By the way, every culprit in Ace Attorney is sentenced to death. I think those two cases were instrumental to lead up to Farewell to raise the point of moral greyness of being a lawyer and not having the culprits be cartoonishly evil like in the first game. It all leads up to Farewell. Because the fate almost repeated. The victim once again wasn't the actual victim of the case, they were a horrible human being. Adrian was the true victim, just like Ini was, and she could have easily been driven to murder Matt if she was forced into that situation like Ini. Only by finally standing up to Matt we break the curse of the three cases and convict the true culprit and allow justice to be made.
Which for me makes it all weirder that Recipe for Turnabout was written for this game because it doesn't fit the theme or the motif at all. There is some sympathetic backstory with Violetta but last thing I would call that case is morally grey, its a lot more extra than the first two games, just like the rest of the third game. Also Recipe fits so PERFECTLY into the motif that all Trials and Tribulations cases have then I wonder if Takumi wrote the game AROUND Recipe so it fits. Not only does every single case feature complicated relationships and love, once again showing an abusive relationship and how it can damage a person with Violetta, which happens several times in the game, but it also involves poison, which is the third time in the game. I wonder what you will say about Recipe fitting Justice for All more than it does Trials because for me it's not even comparable, Recipe fits Trials freakishly too well.

Definitely an interesting way to look at it! Initially I said Recipe would have fit better simply because I just thought it was of higher quality and would have made sense in that it brought Maggey back around, but when you put it like that I do see your point. Interested to see how I feel about that going back through T&T when I get to recording the footage soon.

I don't think that *every* culprit in AA series is sentenced to death. As some information suggests - it's really depending on circumstances of the case. The more severe those circumstances are - the higher chance to be actually executed. Like, we can definitely assume that every "justifiable self-defense" case is probably "safe" in terms of the sentence. And judging by some information from AAI2, even some murderers can still have a chance for rehabilitation, while some other murderers can have a lifetime in prison. Technically, we know only... maybe 3 or 4 cases where true culprit definitively *was* sentenced for execution?..
All the others, though, we don't have a clue. We can more or less infer the data on our hands, but that would be nothing more than headcannons.

Honestly, I always thought it was strange that the narrative was that Phoenix was on a winning streak up until intentionally getting Engarde a guilty verdict. I just always figured that there were probably plenty of cases that happened off screen or otherwise in-between games that were just of less interest. The way Maya reminisces about Phoenix and Edgeworth always going back and forth in the courtroom always felt something like an implication that they faced off in more than the three cases against him from the original game.

I know a lot of people don’t like the Lost Turnabout, but I personally have no problems with it. They knew they had to do the tutorial stuff again so they just said “eh screw it let’s just not take it seriously at all”. Richard Wellington is genuinely hilarious to me and I greatly enjoy his presence. That said, I totally get why others don’t like it.

I knew I hated the Big Top OST, but I did not expect to have such a visceral reaction when it played throughout the Big Top section of the video. No music has had such a viscious reaction come out of me before LMAOO it was almost painful 😭 also just wanted to mention this was a great video, your storytelling is flipping great

This is definitely my favourite game of the original trilogy, mainly for the last case alone. Everyone trying to keep the case going at the end until the evidence arrives and shooting back and forth like the world's most intense volleyball game is so exciting, and I just love Franziska so much. I also love how Edgeworth is a bit more mature (not that he was immature before, but he definitely has well earned wisdom to depart onto both Phoenix and Franziska.)

I did always think that general opinions about Justice for All were giving the game little credit, so I felt very vindicated by this video and enjoyed it immensely as always! Your own thoughts, experiences and analysis are what Im always most excited to hear about in your retrospectives. The way your videos are put together is nothing short of masterful too. When watching them the pace and the hype is always on point. I also wanted to mention that your coverage of the second case of this game made me enjoy it even more in retrospect, especially when you went into the themes of family surrounding it because it really demonstrated just how perfectly that all falls into place and is explored at just about every step throughout.
