Help me if you can
It's just that this, this is not the way I'm wired
So could you please,
Help me understand why
You've given in to all these
Reckless dark desires
You're lying to yourself again
Suicidal imbecile
Think about it, put it on the faultline
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Over this. Why do you wanna throw it away like this
Such a mess. I don't want to watch you.
Disconnect and self destruct one bullet at a time
What's your rush now, everyone will have his day to die
Medicated, drama queen, picture perfect, numb belligerence
Narcissistic, drama queen, craving fame and all its decadence
Lying through your teeth again
Suicidal imbecile
Think about it, put it on the fautline
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Go with this, why do you wanna throw it away like this
Such a mess, I don't wanna watch you...
Disconnect and self destruct one bullet at a time
What's your rush now, everyone will have his day to die
They were right about you
They were right about you
Lying to my face again
Suicidal imbecile
Think about it put it on the fautline
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Over this, why do you wanna throw it away like this
Such a mess, come to this, come to this
Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet at a time
What's your hurry, everyone will have his day to die
If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere,
Do it somewhere far away from here
------------------------------------------------------
All a perfect circle songs in this user
I told my 10 year old son about this band and he said a perfect circle is hard to make and therefore they must be a good band....kids are so enlightened
You should tell him about Giotto when he gets a little older.
You have a very intelligent child my friend.
Because there is no such thing as a perfect circle... What a bright kid
Your kid didn't say that🙄
I'm sure he also thinks that you'd have to be an absolute Tool to be able to come up with such legendary music.
"What's your rush now? Everyone will have his day to die"
That lyric alone got me through a lot of depression.
Me too
Me too! The whole lyrics really hit my mind and made me think. I often think of this phrase "what's your rush now, everyone has his day to die". Thank you Maynard!
Best line in the song
It makes me think.
The Outsider Fits Alot of People Besides Maynard's Brother its Soooo fitting to Someone i Know And Adore Its Tooooo fucking bad People Become that OUTSIDER🤔😥😎
“And if you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere. Do it somewhere far away from here.” the ending to this song is so powerful
So powerful...
Bah
Naturalmente yo oia Lo que realmente estaba diciendo la zorra esa
So powerful...
From words? From head?
This whole album was the only thing keeping a 17 years old homeless kid together most nights... 16 years later these songs still hit.
Truthfully glad you made it through, you miracle.
I use to crush up 2 or 3 peach xanax and snort them and zone out to this shit in highschool. Luckily i made it into my late 30s and wised up from everything else lol. Still good tunes sober though
@@blakematthews9694All of that so good back in the day! We’re still here w impeccable taste in music!
Same. This song made me look within.
The Tool sounds like the guy from singer.
Hahaha it IS....Maynard
yes he does! and with a wig on lol
Nice
the sounds tool like singer from the guy
@@doogarharz2175 got that good wig tone, that's how you can tell the difference
Their best song.
Their best album mer de noms was awesome and had some great songs but thirteenth step was strait up bangers front to back
This and so long and thanks for all the fish
Close.. Definitely up there.
@TenSack wrong lol
Not even close. Orestes is their masterpiece with The Noose 2nd.
It's almost a year since I was a suicidal American soldier. The Army medical system had the same kind of attitude with me that this song portrays, and told me things like this when I reached out to them for help. It's a deep comfort to know that others have gone through what I went through and heard the same things.
Sorry you went through that. 😔
And you're still here. Something important about your life. If it hasn't already revealed itself, it will. 😌
Bastards
An ex Aussie soldier here. 100%
Immense love and immense respect
Hey bud, how ya feelin’? Are you getting any other help aside from that?
As someone who suffered from a narcissistic mother's abuse, her 4 suicide attempts, endless trips to rehabs, living with the fear I'd find her dead the moment I came home from school... never being able to tell her how much trauma and how much pain she's caused me... just expecting me to forgive her and move forward... I'd cry listening to this song because I wanted to scream every single word of this song in her face... I've grown a lot since then... but this song will always remind me of my mother
I think that's one of the features of music. It can get you through something or remind you of it.
Hope everything's fine with your affairs....
Shut up and don’t play the victim. That woman was depressed af that she tried suicide FOUR times
@@katekane6697 God forbid you ever experience everything I did. No one is playing victim... you sound really immature
Sorry for what happen to you, me too my mother been not good with me hope you okay
My sister you will show you're strength by overcoming this ❤ and remember that everyone will have their day. Including you.
Maynard James Keenan on “Amotion” says: “And in the case of "The Outsider”, it’s sung from the perspective of a person who doesn’t understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it’s more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off."
+apples 88 I am glad you posted this. Although MJK always writes in a vague manner so we can all have a unique interpretation, I feel he really had a point with this song that a lot of people missed out on, unfortunately It's a very important point to make about addiction/substance abuse and how complex that issue actually is.
apples 88 "hungry for apples!?"
I thought it was about apathy and Sept importance.
apples 88 this was my mother's song...
And she finally did die.. pills..
apples 88 thanks for the quote. Very close to what I was thinking.
3:29 gives me serious chills
Yes Indeed!! Reminded me of myself sadly when I was heading straight down to rock bottom, and I did... 78 months in feds and this was the first song put on my MP3 player, I can relate to this song in so many ways..
The snare drum is like a gunshot on this album!
Josh Freese's drums are always very crisp it seems.
That the what i think actually thank you for your how looking this song
"They were right about you"
As someone who went trough suicidal thoughts, this hits. Makes me think of all the pieces of shit that treated me like in this song, everybody makes you feel like just an inconvenience, an annoyance, bad vibes and toxicity that needs to be thrown away like garbage
maybe you can riddle me this? why is it that at persons in need, find solace in muzac? and peeps that reckon, they got it all together, release crap?
@@benfox542 Music is supposed to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. If you have no depth of character, which often comes from being an outsider for whatever reason, you're art will never touch a deeper level in it's listeners. It's hard to fake, so most just stick to bubble gum pop music where money is guaranteed.
@@doodlebob3758 "Music is supposed to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed." is a ridiculously sophomoric sentiment. Be better than this.
@@ZomboZombie I was just trying to relate the best i could within the parameters of not being pretentious. Don't patronize me.
While I understand your plight but what was everyone else dealing with? Nobody wants to be around someone who is toxic or giving bad vibes because their own life has issues. It's complicated for sure.
A Perfect Circle. A Perfect Band. A Perfect Song.

The only mic drop that will EVER matter. Is after the last word in this song.
Etternally. Any dimension. Any realm. Fact.
Fabulous man
0:58 I love the sound of his voice here, very unique singer.
Undertow is my all-time fav for his voice...l lateralus for Carey, the pot for Adam and probably all of them for Justin....
I agree, just love this voice
I love his voice anywhere. I'm not convinced Maynard's not a God or a Vampire lol ❤️ He and his bands are ridiculously talented tho.
No shit
My girlfriend was depressed and thinking about suicide when I met her, I told her to listen to this song because it has a message that she should hear. She cried and told me how she understood this song and what it met to her. She doesn't think about it much anymore she's doing a lot better but I couldn't get through to her how much she really met to me, her family and her friends. I feel like when I had her listen to this it got through to her I feel like it truly helped her. In short this song is a masterpiece and deserves more fame than I gets.I feel like this has has cept more than just her from committing suicide. Truly my favorite song on this album.
Are you guys still together?
@@jingledfriskies5048 Unfortunately not. Things change and we're both happier separated now.
@@dannylindaman2787 fuck
This song isn't about suicide , we've been over this. Its the outsider trying to change an insular self destructive society. They are lying to themselves , not even aware that what they are doing leads to their doom..

Only heard this song for the first time yesterday. I'm obsessed with the bridge! The lyrics, the timing, the melody 🥰
Damn Maynard can belt it out, spine chilling.
I can’t hear this without thinking of Resident evil afterlife
Well then just think about Resident Evil in general. Its a great series and you dont kill your fun for APC

Same here brother
Me 2
Turn the console off and go outside or maybe a show
It's been several years since I've heard of this song but the lyrics snap right back
I love Maynard and his music has had such a huge impact on my life. Thanks.
I heard this song was called The Outsider because it's from the point of view from someone who doesn't understand addiction talking down to the addict
Kristin H you are a smart girl. Impressive
The song goes well with Sober - Tool
Brett Rowedda 😁
This song is pure sarcasm
Maybe he does know and that's why it is perfect
my dad got me into a perfect circle when i was real little, this is still my favorite song to this day!
why is this your favorite song?
Same lol, my dad heard it on one of the Resident Evil movie's credit roll.
@@obo_ooz LOL my mom said that to my dad and him being a tool lover boy her was so offended
The song is written in third person. The “third person” that Maynard had a conversation with is Layne Staley‘s brother. Layne!s brother could not understand Layne’s drug addiction. Maynard wrote a song about it. The End
really? if that's true, that's depressing and interesting. I love Layne and AIC.
Song will never get old.
of course :)
I listen to this song at least 2-3 times a day. Think it is my favorite song of all time. 😅
One of the most powerful songs of ALL-TIME!
This should be the USMCs tune
please ... thats stupid
It really sums up life for what it's made up to be, some are strong and some are weak.
Listen to Tool-sober now that is powerful.
trppytoes no person is simply just weak or just strong.
Take me back. I jammed this album so hard in highschool when it came out. Thanks to a short on Facebook it brought me back here almost 20 years later. Crazy how time has flown by
I love this track. One of my favorite songs. The lyrics just click and make PERFECT sense to me,the melody/harmonies,every single thing.
Indeed
It takes the right TOOL to make A PERFECT CIRCLE
I used to listen to this album non stop, on my long drive to work.
A bad ass album for a bad ass bartender!
I hope it's a rock bar, though
Manolis Grifoman A hotel. I'm still the best mixologist though...lol
So, when they interview the best mixologist and ask your secret, don't tell them it's because of this album :P
Manolis Grifoman Good one Manolis. Lol
Get out you...
“Well isn’t this one big family reunion...”
Phenomenal band, Maynard the new Ozzy! Whoever he gets as musicians around him are world class ala Zakk Wyldw, Randy Rhoads
I heard this watching resident evil and then I was like "it sounds like tool" found out it was a perfect circle, felt stupid, and then found out maynard leads both bands
He also leads a 3rd group named: Puscifer
That was the exact same thing that I did
He likes to rock
He is the singer for all three but APC is sort of a side project. Not "his" band
aren't you special
"everyone will have his day to die" Couldn't agree more
"I told you i was bringing some friends!"
"You should've brought more!"
2018! I'm absolutely in love with Maynard James Keenan's voice. He's genius!
Im an old old Metal head Slayer,Exodus, etc. etc. but this band and Tool are BAD ASS!!!
Same

Lol they're only like 15 years apart music-wise
When it was used in Resident Evil: Afterlife trailer, it gave me goosebumps when I was younger haha

Same lol It was also used in prison break with same actor that played Chris Redfield and I started fanning hard.
ScytheMisterNate I got cold chills hearing it during the season 1 finale. haha.

is that corporal hart from timesplitters?
Love those harmonics in the outro - what a tune
When Maynard Says "They were right about you" gives me chills... Damn the way his voice blends with the melody. THATS ART!!!!!
This song is written from the perspective of someone who doesn't understand addiction. speaking as an addict i get this whole album and its one of my favorites.
All the lyrics suggest that dude. Read the lyrics again thinking it's written by someone who hasn't livd the lif of an addict. Who thinks it's easy to just up and kick a drug...
Addiction is for the weak.
Christian D not agreeing or disagreeing with you but their whole album "13 step" even the band name references back to AA and the 12 step program. Numerous songs on their album have drug references take the weak and powerless for example "dig in search of China white as i approach the bottom" the lead singer is also in tool which have many addiction related songs I really don't care if the lead singer denys it or not he's got a fucking song named "h" and "sober" if it quacks like a duck acts like a duck and walks like a duck it's a fucking duck doesn't matter if you call it a chicken or not. So yeah the songs about addiction
Ethan Hogan the song H. Is about the abuses Maynard went through as a child from his dad. He wrote the song for his son and the fear of abusing him the same way Maynard's father abused him. His son's name is Devo H. Keenan. The title of the song is H. for his sons middle name Helio. In short the title H. has nothing to do with heroin as you interpreted it. Maynard has written songs about drugs and addiction though and named a tool album opiate and also wrote a song "sober" which is on the undertow album. Quite a few of his other lyrics can be seen as references to addiction if you are or have been a drug user and that's the way you interpret it.
Nick L I think you missed the point I was trying to make...
super surprised to find so many people misinterpreting the lyrics here...it's called "the outsider" because the narrator is clueless as to what is actually happening. "And in the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off." quite contrary to what most of you seem to believe.
Can you really misinterpret? It's like poetry, the meaning and interpretation is different for everyone. Thats what music is supposed to be :)
@@marissapartida5191 well those are two polar opposite interpretations so i think its important to understanding the intention behind the lyrics to introduce both ideas to someone who may have only seen one side of it.
In order to get your point across you must not use the word interpret because interpret allows others to interpret, you should have said the intention of the lyrics because then it is not debatable because it was the writers intention, not up for your fucking interpretation. But you accidentally used the dreaded interpret word which allowed for smartasses who think they know things say “HoW CaN YoU MiSiNtErPrEt iT”
This song was constantly on repeat during my breakup....that was 12 years ago and it never really bothered me...I heard this again about 5 minutes ago and couldn't breath because I was choking back tears...I never cry...but man I ugly cried.
Then it went away....Now I'm left with a peace I really can't explain.
So thanks...I guess.
xeronicus just don’t lose yourself. You. Don’t lose that.
Ok
Rick dueling the king of games brought me here and I'm loving it
"That's what happens when you fuck with Pickle Rick!"
This song to me explains how regardless of how difficult life is, you should always persevere and not think suicide is an easy way out.
This song helps me get out of my "sluggish" mood. ;)
“...Disconnect and self destruct one bullet at a time..”
"If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere, Do it somewhere far away from here ".. that sentence is the most intense point of this song! i get chills when listen to that part
That chorus is so freaking... good mostly cause of the time signature change . It makes it feel epic. I think maybe the whole song has 4 time changes in all. FOUR! Hard to tell since i can’t count 11/8 very well. 🧐
Yo mama
this song "to me" is what keeps me balanced through negative thoughts. anytime im feeling negative this song relieves my pain in a paradoxical way and i love it!
This song makes me think dynamic thoughts.
I just heard this song for the first time a week ago, and can confidently say it's one of the best songs I've ever heard. Not only does it sound perfect to my ears on all spectrums, but I couldn't relate more to the lyrics. Two of my best friends (and most people I knew in high school to some extent) went down the road of Xans and RCs back starting around 2013, obviously with depression relevant as it usually is with drugs like this, shitty drugs people sell for a slight profit but also do themselves, and they almost killed themselves in my own presence (both involving being KOd on their back while puking ((one at my HS graduation bonfire one on a random day))); on multiple occasions even. Even as great friends there was nothing I can do to make them feel like life is worth living if you get down to it.
But, the reason why I feel I could use a therapist in life is because I think my Mom is the same way. She lost her father due to liver cancer when she was 19 in 1988, her fantastic and beautiful sister died of cancer in July 2021 after being diagnosed in December 2020, her wonderful brother is currently having heart problems at an age where he still needs to work, and her mother has come down with complete dementia to go along with heart problems in the year 2021: in the past year she aometimes doesn't recognize who my mom; her daughter, is, much less me. My mother also had her gallbladder explode 12 years ago when I was 12 followed by her spleen exploding when I was 13, 11 years ago. On top of her chronic pain from slipped disks and arthritis. She is one of the nicest, strongest people I know and In no way does she deserve this suffering.
This is the main reason I no longer believe in god after being raised a Catholic and question my mother whenever she prays as her life has been so tragic it makes even me cry nearly every day. I wish I could comfort her.
I had to get this off my chest I really really need a therapist
On top of all this the biggest thing I feel is that I can apply the song to myself. Yes, my life has had extreme difficulties that have broken me down, but so does almost everyone else's, and millions have had it worse, so why would I be a depressed bitch killing myself every day by hating my life and not progressing myself as I should due to distractions and complications that most people experience, and let it defeat me rather than help me grow as a person. Basically when I hear him speaking the chorus I an feel it as being me talking to myself in a way that is motivating
Wish you luck
Good that you admit you’ve lost your faith. Music is the one truth that lyrics are the truths behind people’s lives behind closed doors. It’s good that bands use life stories from themselves and others lives to make and sing songs about. Limp biz kit ‘s Re-Arranged is a song that hit me about an abusive relationship. Music can be a healer and also an eye opener.
I'm lost for words after reading your comment, a separate song could well be written based on your experiences... Peace be with you, brother, hope you'll regain all that's most precious and keep fighting indeed, life is one big fight between good and evil.

Perfect circle: *making the outsider theme*
*resident evil afterlife coming out*
The perfect circle: *remakes it's into a epic theme*
Porcupine Tree and A Perfect Circle always invoke an image of Silent Hill and Resident Evil in my head. Just that Japanese late 90s feel, idk how or why. I love it
This song was in the 2nd Resident Evil movie so
Maynard said a lot of the Thirteenth Step was wrote from the perspective of Layne Staley, and you definitely feel this song is one of those, with the themes of addiction etc... You get this feeling of Maynard being angry at Layne, but from a place of love, because he should have never left us so soon
This song, besides being an absolutely astonishing work of art, gives me two things. One, it helps me see what's going on in my head from the perspective of a person who has no clue about it and it helps me see and believe that the changes I went through with quitting weed and cigarettes and actually anchoring my life in something that just makes me wanna get off my ass and do stuff and not fall into that dark pit where my chronic depression usually sends me was worth it. I know it matters little but to all the guys that struggle, I wish you well and hang on in there, you ain't alone.
I cry everytime I listen to this. I feel like this isn't exactly what it's meant to be, but I can't help but feel it perfectly describes what it's like when you're in love with someone that's sometimes suicidal, I love them so much and they've never done anything wrong, the world was so cruel to them but this does bring me to tears still because everytime they think about it, those lyrics are almost exactly what I'm thinking. However without the "do it away from here" part, I'll never let them.
@@internetperson. Hi there, thank you for the insightful and nice comment🌹 Also, I want to say that since I left this comment, the person I'm with has really got much better, we both worked hard for her to get here, and she really is much more healthy these days and I'm very hopeful about the future❤️
A perfect Circle / Tool is really amazing. Tool new double-CD is incoming soonish. We waited roughly 10 years on it :D
i think it's been made clear that album is not happening.
Maynard, Adam, and Danny all said it was happening recently. They were going through a lawsuit for a while, plus side projects, and now they're just trying to get shit flowing.
I thought maynard said he didnt want anything to do with Tool? Or was the article i read complete horseshit..
I think it's horseshit? It sounds like they're still working on the music, and it's making progress but MJK steps in last to add vocals and it hasn't gotten there yet.
They've all said multiple times within the last year that they're working on it. Danny and Justin both said on different occasions a couple of months ago that it's in the works.
This one was about layne staley. Said by maynard himself.

Such a powerful and epic song.
When a loved one battles with depression addiction, or any mental illness, you understand exactly where Maynard is speaking from.
Hopefully not, because that's a REALLY fucked up way to look at their struggles.
"Suicidal imbecile", "If you're going to pull the trigger, do it somewhere far away from here".
What it take to get it through to you precious? More to this, why you wanna throw it away like this. He loved this person.
No, this song is a sarcastic critique to people who don't understand their loved ones struggles and criticize them from an outside point of view, thats why its called ''the outsider''
"[In] the case of "The Outsider", it's song from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off."[
I agree, but mine is from another angle, the nik Cruz types who fake mental illness for attention.

i always loved tool but I'm just getting into a perfect circle and I'm really wondering why i took so long to come around they're awesome
This song reminds me of a dream I had 7-8 years ago. I was in a grassy clearing in a forest. The sky was a bleak purple. There was a mysterious girl who wanted to build a treehouse with me. Now everytime I hear this song I remember that beautiful dream.
I was working power on a summer tour in the U.K. (not a Perfect Circle) .. the sound engineer blasted this out as a test on a build day, loud as hell, echoing across the countryside ...I just stood in bright sunshine, drenched in goosebumps.. bliss!
The lyrics to "The Outsider" at face value, are in judgement of a potentially self-destructive or suicidal individual, though Maynard clarified that the song's message was meant to be a criticism of people who do not understand the struggles of people dealing with depression, saying:
"[In] the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off." its not just that easy to walk it off now, its an extreme mental state that leaves you and your life in a crumbled mess of psychological and physical despair to emotional and physical pains and mental anguish, mania to suicide but its just nothing, "RIGHT".
So to explain extreme selfishness?
To me, this song isn't necessarily targeted to someone contemplating suicide, but rather someone trapped in the throes of drug addiction. I don't want to watch you disconnect and self-destruct one bullet (hit) at a time.

As someone already said in the comments, " it’s sung from the perspective of a person who doesn’t understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it’s more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off." I found myself to be this outsider. Maybe it's why I like this song so much.
Resident Evil 4 Afterlife.

Great tune, great musicians, great feelings, great energy! Thanks to God and humanity that music is born, forged and emerges!
Judith? 3 Libras? No, the best is The Outsider.
Orestes is their masterpiece without any doubt.

KEG LYPH MAFYA q.
this song is talking about commit a suicide because the guy that wants to suicide is tired of her life because the drugs (heroin) or whatever ruined him/her and wants to call the attention of someone, is like asking or looking for help but at the end no one cares about it. so the guy is going to suicide " far away from here"
such a perfect song with so deeper... meanings
almost the same thing with the song of "weak and powerless" of APC
..... reading comprehension guys it's a valuable skill. It's about getting tired of someone you care about using drugs, and just giving up on them. It's not a self reflection, it's looking at someone you caring about killing themselves with drugs and just ranting/exploding on them.
Chris There's no point in the song from the addicts point of view.
I like how everyone can take something different from the song.
My theory is more in keeping with the theme of the album, drug addiction.
the "outsider" is the person who has never taken drugs and feels no sympathy for the unfortunate addict calling them suicidal and an imbecile.
this is one of my favourite things about the whole album, it calls everyone out weather its the addict the recovered(the noose) or even the people who dont take drugs.
Judge Lead ^ The thing is there is no heavy symbolism or metaphoric use. Without that there is no way to interpret this song any other way as but a rant against a loved one who's addicted. The addicted never talks in the song.
***** Except the only time you can interpret a song differently from others is when their is heavy use of symbolism or metaphors. This song in particular lacks any which eliminates ambiguity. If you took an English analysis class you would understand
i love this so much. it's taken me years to fathom.
2018 still epic 🔥🔥🔥💯
Love this song from Resident Evil Afterlife ❤
👁️ 🔥 I sit here at the gym, concentrating on my normal routine of lifting weights. This song on my regular playlist, when it hits me--like a dart to the brain-- I finally understand this song. You’d imagine that it’s fairly easy, right? Well, lyrics typically are the last thing that I pay attention to when I’m listening to a song. How did it take me this many years to comprehend Maynards lyrical genius and perhaps I don’t understand it, however at least now I have an idea. This just makes this song even more rightfully powerful, holy smokes, my hands trembling, but from the workout? I can’t really tell.
Best last 30 seconds of a song ever!
