- David Broome "Life Stories" brought to you by Voltaire Design.
This we week welcome legend of showjumping David Broome to Episode 4 of Voltaire Design's "Life Stories" talking his home and successful equestrian venue the Wales and West in Chepstow.
David’s career began in the heady days of BBC coverage when showjumping enjoyed prime time TV spot watched by an audience of millions, at time when both the horses and the riders were personalities loved and admired by the nation.
David talks to Andrew Baldock about his early days competing on ponies in Wales alongside a host of well known names and his big break through moment on the talented gelding Wildfire, who was bought for just £60, the horse that started his journey to becoming one of Britain's finest ever showjumpers.
In 1960 David and Wildfire were shortlisted for the Rome Olympics. But watch our video to find out how Sunslave (formerly ridden by Pat Smythe) joined the story and took David to Rome and his first Olympic individual bronze medal, both aged 20.
David goes on to describe how the duo went on to take Bronze at the World Championships in Venice and becoming the first equestrian to win the BBC Sport Personality of the Year.
David is one of the most successful showjumpers of all time and remains the only British rider to have won the World Championships (Beethoven 1970) he has represented Great Britain at five Olympics 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1988 and won individual bronze medals in 1960 on Sunsalve and in 1968 on Mr Softee.
