Each state is different and have slightly different requirements to pass and restrictions to drive ect… but still people just drive like they want to drive once they get their license.

I moved my mates car out of the driveway to get my car out. I got booked for driving without P plates cause his car had none! I drove it 5 meters to park it out front. Was the fine and 1 month suspension justiied?

P-platers in this context means provisional licence, ie you're considered a novice driver who at least knows the mechanics of driving as well as the road rules. If you lose your licence for some reason you may get a probationary licence after your suspension period. Basically, p plates are displayed so everyone else on the road knows that you're inexperienced and likely to make bad judgement calls when driving, so we can all give you a wide berth😉

You then get a learners permit. You can only drive whilst supervised by a licenced driver and you have to put a sign on your car with a large L. We call this an "L Plate". This is being "on your Ls". Once you have done enough hours of supervised driving you take a driving test. If you pass you get your provisional license. You can now drive unsupervised, and you have to display a red P on your car. There are special limits on speed, number of passengers and hours that you are allowed to drive. This is what we call being "on your Ps". You are a P Plater. After a year of good behaviour, you graduate to a green P with fewer restrictions for up to 2 years. Still a P Plater but cockier. If you make it through, you graduate to a full licence.
My time in sydney taught me to be very wary af the silver service taxis, if any vehicle was going to do an unannounced 90 degree change in trajectory in peak hour traffic, it was one of those bastards.

It's actually a max of 13 points in the last 3 years. Demerit points older than 3 years are removed from your record.

It's provisional. A probationary licence is what you get after a period of suspension, and I don't think you have to display plates on that.
