I didn't know the answer. But after revealing it had something to do with Sports, it became clear.( Watching this Video from Mönchengladbach). And the rivalry goes so far, that a few years ago, the fans of cologne destroyed many fences, Bus Stops and so on after a game. We lived around 1km from the Stadium. The determination of personal details of around 30 agressive fans happend on the parking Spot of our Neighbour(who didn't to be at home). After around an hour a policewoman in full body armor came over and asked if she could use our toilet(we stood at our window, watching what happend). we said yes no problem. after she came back we said, if your colleagues want to use the bathroom too, they can use it. two minutes later we had many police officers standing in front of our balcony. 🤣🤣

A few years ago the Cologne fans stole the large club banner the Mönchengladbach Ultras used, and ripped it to shreds live during the game. "Was ist der Unterschied zwischen einem Gladbach-Fan und einem Penner? Der Gladbach-Fan hat keine Fahne."

I got the bit mixed up and thought this was referring to the final question of a head-to-head round to get a player through to the final chase.
My guess was: All other teammates had been eliminated and he was the last remaining. If he got it right he would have been in the final round on his own for 500 euros which is tough to win. (UK at least) rules state if everyone is eliminated before the final round, then the team nominates a single player to play for 1000 euros. So it would be for more money on a team mate who might be better.

Initial thoughts: I know nothing about "The Chase" specifically; but I gather it's a publicized game show à la "Who wants to be a millionaire". Maybe because Cologne has two (or more) ambiguous names for it: cologne, cologna, colognia, colonia, ..., and he didn't want to fall into some bureaucratic dismissal. Perhaps the name at the time referred to by the question was different than today's name?
Or according to what I've got from the thumbnail, it was ambiguous whether saying "yes" or "no" would block him from progressing forward to earn more. "Yes" to 500 could have been interpreted as a "thanks for playing, bye, and here's your chosen 500 cop-out reward". "No" could have also been interpreted as "if he doesn't even want 500, he definitely doesn't want any of the better prize above 500, so give him nothing".
The right solution to such awful, dirty, weak, set-up, is to state the conflict and not answer as they sort it out.

    • @jcxz983

Which version of the name you should use depends very much on context. Köln is the official version used by the government. If you stand in front of the townhall the seal reads "Köln". Cross the road to the convention center and a lot of signage and announcements will be in english and say "Cologne" to acommodate foreign business travellers. Talk to a local and he will call it "Kölle" because that's the name in the local dialect. If you then still have the time to visit a museum or the ancient city wall you'll see latin inscriptions reading "CCAA" (Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium), because the city was founded by the romans.
And yes, people do argue about which one to use. A couple of years back we had a group of local businesses lobbying the townhall to introduce english language announcements on trains and trams. Again for the foreign visitors to the convention center. The local government gave in by the tiniest amount and now we have those announcements on the train from the airport to the trade fair. Most of everything else is still in german.
But there you have it, people from Kölle campaigned for saying Cologne.
