  • There's a special plant I really want to grow, so I'm doing a seed experiment to see what will work best. I'm also slicing root balls with my Hori Hori knife in My Carolina Garden. That's right. Taking a big pot arrangement apart, and I'm getting to use my knife, which was a Christmas gift, for the first time!!
The special plant is a Green Twister Echinacea. I love it so much and would love to have lots of it in my garden!! Some of the plants I'm dividing up are the Croton, Asparagus Fern, and Heliconia. Awesome new plant addition to my tropical plant collection!!
This video sort of falls into my series called "Greenhouse Chats" - where we're talking about all things gardening throughout the winter. I hope you enjoy it!
My name is Nicole Roggeman, and I garden in Southeastern North Carolina in Zone 8B. I am able to work in My Carolina Garden pretty much all year, as my ground does not freeze. I propagate some plants indoors, and I store and grow things in my green house during colder months.
I am obsessed with gardening and improving my landscape, and all of the budget gardening ideas on how I'm saving money in the garden this season will be used by me!!

Spring is coming! I live very close to lumberton nc zone 8a and we just had a 70 degree day. The next few days will be warm as well. I know yall close to wilmington got alot more snow then we did here. But just hang in there i think by the end on feb we will be getting some cherry blossoms and bradford pairs blooming.

It’s amazing how much our weather varies even within such a small area. I’m excited to see what blooms first in our region this year! I think you're right though - spring is coming. There are little hints of it everywhere!

Hi Nicole🌺 . Cool video .Happy planting . I can't wait to see your garden in spring .My experience was also successful in planting tree seeds such as avocado, mango, chestnut and Royal Poinciana. I put the seeds in kitchen paper soaked in water and put them in closed boxes, except for the avocado, which I put the seed in water. Now I have a large avocado tree and it has given me fruit. I also have small mango, poinciana and chestnut trees.try it . Have a great day .🌺🌻🌺🌻

I have an asparagus fern in full sun in Texas heat zone 9b(10a). I was also surprised it made it through a light frost unprotected with minimal damage. Only thing I don’t like about this fern is that it has thorns.

That's really good information about the frost. I like when plants surprise us that way, when they're tougher than we expect.

Great video! I'm excited to see the results of your experiment! Question... Did the sudden warm weather spook you in regards to your winter sowing? It spooked me! I opened my tote, and a blast of heat shot out. I left the top off most of the day. I put the top back on in the evening. Thanks for sharing!

Hi there. That's a great question. I think I was more concerned with my seeds thinking the "deep freeze" temps were normal 🤣 Then again, I didn't get a shot of heat out of my winter sowing container - that would have thrown me, too!

8bNC Seed starting. My cool weather veggies are going into the garden next week. I’ve started geraniums and seeded some vervain, artichokes, snapdragons, poppies and larkspur using winter sowing method. 😊
