The man is back! Loved Beetleborg. Always loved the bug motif. I got introduced to Metal Hero with bootleg Speilban episodes. I wish they were still around.
@robertsonmcnaughton4850 barely anyone remembers beetleborgs dude.the real reason is japan just stopped making it and it eventually combined with kamen rider, specifically the heisei era
Fun fact the Galactic Union Police was mentioned in Sun Vulcan. Shozo Uehara was its head writer and later head writer of the Space Sheriff series. This made it possible for crossovers with Super Sentai under writer Naruhisa Arakawa.
Fun Fact: B-Fighter Yanma/Dragonborg was played by Reuben Langdon A.K.A. Dante from Devil May Cry. So in DMC5 you have a Metal Hero and 2 Power Rangers.
Growing up in Indonesia, I was captivated by the Space Sheriff series, particularly Gavan and Shariban. Compared to earlier tokusatsu shows, these series represented a significant leap forward in production quality. The costumes were more intricate, the arsenals more detailed, and the dragons and motorcycles were simply incredible. Fight choreography and visual effects reached new heights, setting a different standard for the genre. What set Space Sheriff apart was its narrative approach. Unlike the more juvenile Super Sentai series, these shows targeted a more nuanced audience while still appealing to children. Gavan's storyline, in particular, was deeply emotional. The arc involving Voicer, Gavan's father-a fellow Space Sheriff betrayed by his partner Hunter Killer, imprisoned by Makuu, and ultimately dying in his son's arms-was accompanied by a haunting soundtrack that has stayed with me for over three decades. Shariban explored equally mature themes, featuring a poignant storyline about refugees from a planet devastated by Madou's genocide. By the time Shaider arrived, however, my initial excitement had waned, and I never watched the series. I was somewhat dismissive of Juspion and Spielban, perceiving them as derivative works in the Space Sheriff canon. Metalder seemed too dark for my taste. While I enjoyed Jiraiya, Jiban, and Janperson, the specific plot details have faded from my memory. The cop and bug-themed series like Winspector, Solbrain, Exceeddraft, Blue Swat etc never captured my interest, mainly due to their uninspiring designs. When Gavan began making cameo appearances in various tokusatsu movies and later starred in three movies alongside Shariban and Shaider, I held out hope for a potential series remake. Unfortunately, those hopes were never realized.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Thanks for the information! I had no idea that two of the villains were named after the Poltergeist movie. Now that you mention it, I can see the connection. If Gavan is considered a melodramatic film, it had Gavan searching for his lost father, his romantic relationship with Mimi, and his journey to reconnect with Earth as his home planet. It's understandable that Sharivan would carry a different movie genre. Thinking about it more, Sharivan does have an unsettling atmosphere and a distinct intensity. Even its mid-2000s movie feels darker, with more blood and gore compared to the Gavan and Shaider films.
And despite what August Ragone says, Gavan did NOT inspire Robo-cop. Thanks for making DiscoTek think that and ballooning the price of the bluray, Ragone!
@@apex2000 Nope, August Ragone says it was Gavan who inspired Robocop on the back of the Discotek BluRay boxset. Jiban was CLEARLY inspired by Robocop though.

With his transforming assistant Mimi, his powerful silver combat suit and his interdimensional battleship Dolgiran. Gavan will fight back against their Makuu’s greedy ambitions tooth and nail. Will he find his father in the process?! Kenji Ohba heads up an all-star production that would kick off the Metal Hero franchise and change the medium of tokusatsu forever! Gavan's cameo in Wingman was nice, even tho metal heroes is donezo it's nice that the characters aren't locked away for eternity and can live through cameos
It was said that Spielban's bike, the Hovarian, was a concept vehicle developed by Suzuki. The folks at Toei liked it, so it ended up being used in the show. In my country, Shaider got really popular, but for different reasons. While the show was action-packed, boys also watched it for actress Naomi Morinaga's underwear shots.
Also a fact that makes B Fighter even cooler is that G-Stag’s actor would go on to be Mega Silver in Megaranger two years later in 97. Love the videos:)
I'm lucky enough to have watched some Metal heroes during my childhood (was localized here in the PH) and still have fond memories of them. Still rewatching to this day
I think Metal Hero kept the "solo protagonist" aspect alive in tokusatsu during Kamen Rider's break, which helped Kamen Rider come back as massively as it did. Ultraman probably did as well, but Kamen Rider and Metal Heroes feel closer in theme and scope than Ultraman to me.
They didn't make a couple movies that were metal heroes but they were actually anime origins. On another note, is it common right as for a while actually went hiatus and then they got renewed with the hensei era. So metal he was might return in the future. With success of movies like iron Man, Superman Lois is character steel, cyborg in different mediums, and other metal heroes from the comic book world. Might actually bring metal heroes back and sometime in the future.
Nice summary of the franchise. I wish you would have gone into more detail on the villains for each show, but as just covering the basics you did a nice job. I've reviewed the first 9 series so far and I really feel this is an underrated franchise that got buried by the big three. Kind of like how Garo is knocked to the wayside today. I never really saw much of VR Troopers outside of the 5 parter from Season 2 when they switched from Metalder footage to Shaider. You actually forgot about Girls in Trouble that teamed the female MH companions up with Deka Pink and Yellow and Jiraiya's episodes from Ninninger. I am curious, what is your favorite MH series?
Thanks for watching - It's hard to pick 1 favorite but the shows I put on to watch the most are Winspector & Juukou B-fighter - I might make longer, more detailed "everything about" videos on the individual seasons, but only if there's enough interest
@@Acrimony_Toku Makes sense. People love watching Toku reviews, so there is interest and you've got the subscriber count for it. I'd say give it a shot at some point.
I personally feel that the latest Tokusatsu show called Wingman feels more of a spiritual successor to the Metal Heroes franchise. While Wingman manga is its own series that is merely inspired by Toku heroes, the show and I think even the manga takes more inspiration and reference from Uchu Keiji Gavan that I can even say that Koichi Sakamoto wanted Wingman to be a revival of the Metal Heroes franchise in a more unexpected way
@@Acrimony_Toku It should also be noted that Shaider had a second movie, Shaider: Pursuit! The Strange Kidnappers. Not to mention Metalder: The Movie, Jiban: Great Explosion at the Monster Factory of Fear, Janperson: The Movie, B-Fighter: The Movie, Kabutack: The Great Christmas Battle and Robotack & Kabutack: The Great Strange Country Adventure were are films that were released as well. Also, (from what I've heard at least) Toei has said that the official translated titles for Spielban and Solbrain are "Dimensional Warrior Spielban" and "Super Rescue Solbrain". Finally, why mention Skyfire in Ninja Steel and Chaku in Beast Morphers without mentioning Gavan in Go-Busters and Jiraiya in Ninninger? What about Gavan and DekaRed appearing in Kyuranger as well?
Missing in the timeline is Zaido. Shaider was specifically such a hit in the Philippines that they created a spinoff show called Pulis Pangkalawakan Zaido (Space Police Zaido). The characters were meant to be descendants of the original Shaider.
I confess that I knew very little of this series yet it feels like it suited my sensibilities as a kid because I developed an interest in sci-fi and technological motifs at around nine. Unfortunately, none of the networks or stations where I lived picked up VR Troopers and I had started drifting away when Beetleborgs began airing. One thing I find striking in this series is that it reveals that an Iron Man film would have been feasible as early as the eighties, but this was when Batman, Spider-Man, and the X-Men were at the height of their popularity. Alas, I would like to believe that Metal Heroes has influenced me in some minor way as I wrote my own novel (and ongoing series) showcasing armored heroes giving the beatdown to monsters in an 80s/90s anime-style setting.
I love that these shows are getting some attention, however, I do feel that others like Super Human Samurai Cyber Squad needs a bit more attention too. Just throwing that out there.
I know its not a big show because it was local, but in the Philippines, Shaider was such a big deal that a show was developed that would loosely follow the premise of Space Cops. Zaido was also a big hit that the network re-aired Shaider 😂
I've always hope at least one day that will get a revival series or maybe like a Super crossover episode. But at least here in the west they're making a VR trooper comic book so at least that's something new and happy to look forward to
I haven't watched every show yet, but my rankings right now go: 1. Sharivan 2. Spielban 3. Shaider 4. Juspion 5. Jiban 6. Jiraiya 7. Gavan 8. Winspector 9. Metalder
6:46 Ninja Jiraiya!!! Jiraia-jaya HA! 8:22 This is pure epicness, Special Rescue Police WINSPECTOR, they are the real heroes, please give it a watch! By the way, there is something interesting that might explain the change in tone from the Space Sheriffs to the Rescue Hero series, in 1988-89 there was a serial killer in Japan called Tsutomu Miyazaki and in his house were found a lot of "otaku" materials, like mangas, animes and tokusatsu VHS and the media starting to blaming him as a "monster out of Kamen Rider". That's why Special Rescue Police WINSPECTOR was created, Toei abandoned the "evil organization" and "monster" tropes and focused on fighting human crimes and, specially, rescuing people from disasters. So people like that serial killer don't use tokusatsu as a reason for their own sense of "justice".
In the philippines metal heroes been Filipino dubbed gavan to janperson except jiraya, then switch to saban produced vr troopers and beetle borg like the switch to super sentai to power rangers, maybe because it more cheap because no dubbing needed.
Forgot to include 2007 Flipino show Zaido whcih is next generation show about Shaiders decendants. Its offically license show. I think it deserve a mendtioned despite being mid in my opinion.
I think Toei already ditched it as part of Metal Hero franchise due to how bad it was, thankfully the same network that did Zaido learned their lesson when they made the live-action adaptation of Voltes V and it was even recently rereleased in Japan.
Forever red could of been good if it had not disrespected dairanger slash might morphing power rangers season 2. More specifically if they had not had destroyed one of the most bad ash slash evil robots the way they did. A single shot from a pun laser canon on a motorcycle should not of been able to destroy serpentara. The dairanger version could never be destroyed our even damage. Even with using the turtle robot the dragon could step on it. The dairanger only survived because the dragon decided to leave. Then later on it came back at the end of dairanger and destroyed the whole gorma planet slash home world.
Nice History. I thought you will include "Zaido" which was a "direct/indirect" sequel for Shaider but Philippines set-up. Although itnis more consider as a drama series rather than toku series. Hope to see other toku franchises lile.Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, Garo and the older tokus. GREAT JOB
Yeah, Zaido would have been a good entry here, it probably just slipped my mind or something, but eventually I'll make a video about non-Japanese toku shows and include it then. Thanks for watching!
22:47 But it wasn't lost in his Ninninger appearance, in which his human form also appears. Also, Jiraiya and Juspion are so popular in Brazil that the Brazilian company that has the marketing rights made a manga and a series guide for each one (approved by Toei), and they are planning to release a Juspion movie in 2026.
I never got the point of bring Gaven in when they did they brought him in for only two episodes during beast morphers either season 1 our season 2. Though I got to give them credit they managed to some how bring zed back again for dino furry and cosmic force with his same original design an amazing achievement since one lord zed voice actor I think went to the next dimension a while back but they got sone one to do the new voice that sounds close enough. Also there was the whole huge chronological loop hole they had to work around because off how things went down in the finale episode of power rangers in space. Though if your attached to the story line of in space and its concept then if you try to water mega ranger it may turn some people off they be disappointed at beast about the massive environmental changes

1. Sharivan
2. Spielban
3. Shaider
4. Juspion
5. Jiban
6. Jiraiya
7. Gavan
8. Winspector
9. Metalder

Discotek has released Gavan, Sharivan, Shaider, Juspion, and Jiban on BD with Winspector coming next year.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork thank you!
As well as fire borg lady borg and dragon borg
Always wanted 2 c Beetleborgs vs VR Troopers.
Gavan was not the first one, wtf dude... Ultraman ?? anyone ?
ultraman are aliens that take on human hosts, completely different, gavan was the first
Where Bycrosser, Janperson, MachineMan, changerion, guyferd, zaborger
janperson are metal hero but other tokusatsu not metal hero
Janperson's in the vid
Can you do ultraman
Next video
next ultraman
Working on it now
What about Zaido?
I'll prob include it for a video about Non-Japanese Toku shows
How about GARO next?
I'm working on Ultraman right now but I'll do Garo after that
I like your videos but my guy can you turn down the bgm when you talk? It really muddles up the audio smts
🎬🍿🎥🎞🧙♂
COMMON RIDER?
the subtitles are auto generated and can't spell kamen
@Acrimony_Toku i meant the way it's pronounced here
@@soysaucetilapia2893 kamen rider (kar men rai daaa)
Thanks for watching!
im the 14th person
22:47 But it wasn't lost in his Ninninger appearance, in which his human form also appears.
Also, Jiraiya and Juspion are so popular in Brazil that the Brazilian company that has the marketing rights made a manga and a series guide for each one (approved by Toei), and they are planning to release a Juspion movie in 2026.
A new Juspion movie would be awesome
Power rangers forever
Sorry for annoying😅
6:33 huh,i thought japanese audience could handle dark immature themes unlike western audience according to fanboys lol
I love all the Metal Heroes , and yes including Kabutack and Robotack .

Complete history of Ultraman
next vid
I thought the series end way sooner then middle of 2019.
Yeah they keep introducing films every now & then
I never got the point of bring Gaven in when they did they brought him in for only two episodes during beast morphers either season 1 our season 2.
I think I meant to say 2009 oops my mistake
