FIVE ads, UA-cam, really? If i didn't adore Leland Sklar so damn much there's no way i would tolerate an ad popping up every three minutes, randomly interrupting people.
There were already two before the video started and at least one after. Isn't that more than enough?

Sitting in Norway, I must say it makes me worried watching the news about the US and how your leader and his governement choose to act during these devastating and troubled times. Sorry if it's inappropriate saying so. I wish all the best, sincerely.

Terry Bozzio , wow . Frank Zappa and Dale Bozzio etc . Did you ever get to meet her or Frank ?
I got into Lee Rittenour from a friend, Paul, in central NY in the early 80's . Captain Fingers I think it was.
Got into Phil before that . Carpet Crawler , I Know What I like etc. Trick of a Tail is seminal.
A good friend Mark turned me onto them . It was the last class of the day in 8th grade were we could bring&play albums.
Most in the class took the elective for an easy credit/grade.
There was a handful of us who did bring albums in .
There were two boxed speaker/turntable for the class.
One at each end of the room.
It was neat to see which music gathered the most people around it.
I was that kid Leland who cleaned the phono needle .
Phil's music will always hold a special place for me Leland.
It was a very dark part of my life when In The air Tonight came out.
Those drums awoke something in me .
    Genesis will be on tour.
Hopefully they'll came to the states.

I just subscribed to you yesterday thanks to Rick Beato. So glad I did. Your audio sounds amazing. It can’t be my iPad and Sony headphones. Your bass sounds awesome. I am a closet bass player. By ear, if I know the song, I can pick it up. But I spend more time, yet still casually play acoustic for 50 plus years and finally working on electric. I could listen to your playing and stories all day.
My wife and I are retired nurses, in Canada). She has been making cloth masks for people and the local hospital, nearly 800 so far. She is meticulous and knows the right way. And thank you for promoting the proper way to handle yourself in this pandemic.

End of 2009, at my day-gig/big-box retail. The new manager, Joe, hears that I am a Jazz drummer. One night when he and I are working side by side, he asks me who my favorite drummer is? Me; "You've probably never heard of him. A guy named, Louie Bellson." Joe flips* out! "He used to come over for dinner all the time with Pearl Bailey! My grandfather played with him...Flip Phillips! Saxophone player!". I still have all of the homemade cd's that, Joe gave me of his grandfather, Flip. 😊 I often enjoy degrees of separation...One degree of separation between myself, and my favorite drummer...AND Pearl Bailey, Flip Phillips. Short story...I met Ed Sullivan before the Beatles appearance. In an elevator, he said I was a cute baby. 😇 Thank you again, Leland.

Thanks Leland; another 15 minutes of wonderful entertainment from you and a distraction from my woodshed! My fingers needed a break. Also watched a couple of James Taylor's videos, one of which was 'live' from his home in Montana with his wife and two of his sons. I remember well when Fire and Rain was released. I was in a friend of mine's '54 VW bug in Palo Alto and we had left university for the day and the tune was first released on FM radio. When we got home, my friend James (Brown) picked up his Martin D-28 and played the song through without error! What can I say; humbled to have a friend with such musical genius but he went on to be a great veterinarian (more security) although he still plays to this day while I try to keep up with the rest of you! All the Best, Bryan (from BC, Canada)

I was thinking of the old Ray Charles tune called I CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU. Then you played this, and I remembered it! Thank you just being you, Lee. You have truly built a community with this channel, and also on Facebook when you’re not in jail. I found out you and my personal bassist and hubby, Mr Bill, have another thing in common. . .both of you classically-trained on piano from age 5. I say that a musical education is a great gift. I left the house yesterday (for the first time in over 50 days) for a medical appointment. I was masked in an N95, of course. Looks like I’m facing eye surgery, and hopefully I can see again after that. I still manage to cook delicious food daily. Veggie Beef Soup today with an Amish Cinnamon Apple Cobbler for the dessert. Remember “desserts” spelled backward is “stressed”.

I remember this song. It was a hit record at the time I had to have my beloved boxer put down due to cancer. I had a friend that worked for an animal control that came by the house and picked him up that morning to make it easier on our family. This was the first song on the radio driving to work that morning.Every time I heard this song, it crushed my heart thinking of that sweet animal. Funny how music can take you back to a particular moment in your life. Thanks for the stories you tell and share with us. They are very special to me as I grab on to every word as you tell them. You have had such a wonderful life of performing and meeting so many awesome musicians and the stories are the best.

Thanks for the story and song. I am in Ireland but from the States. Married a wonderful Irish woman I met a few years ago. I was diagnosed with inoperable cancer about a year ago so I have been in isolation most of that time. With the pandemic even more so. Found your UA-cam presence about a month ago and love the stories and such. I have been a big fan since Sweet Baby James. Got to see James at Boston Symphony Hall in the mid 70s but he played solo. I was probably 10 rows back at centered stage. Between songs he kept his head down slightly as he spoke and was rubbing his hands on his jeans as he spoke. At first I thought it was a weird nervous habit then realised that his hands were sweating. He calmed down after a while. Anyway, because he played solo I didn't get to see you, Kooch, Russ, and Craig. I also got to see sister Kate at a small club in Somerville, MA.
LOL - Never saw his brothers but had 2 Persian cats named Alex and Livingston. A black lab mix dog named Taj because my ex-wife wouldn't allow me to name him after Grover Washington Jr., and a Dalmatian named Sinead. After my daughter was born I lost pet naming rights.
Didn't see your post yesterday and was a bit concerned.
Thanks again for everything. Be safe.

Hi lee. Thanks for some South bay memories. In high school I attended many artists at the Jazz Lighthouse on Wednesday student night. $3 and a coke for each of the two sets. 1971-74. I would also ride my bike down there and listen in the alley thru a 2' window, sitting up on my broken down Raleigh 10 speed to get my ear up over the sill in the lighthouse side alley. I saw so many great shows. My favorite was Pharoah Sanders. He had a 6'6" musicians that came out from the back of the club draped in African bells. Talk about an entrance. Dozens of 10' lanyards, up and over each shoulder, percussion bells and conches. Draped over muscular arms in colorful regalia, shaking in 5/4 time. Pharoah, his modal music is so great, was a launching pad to me playing keyboards and congas to get the syncopated phrased pocket. I have played guitar for 55 years and I still love to pull out a comfortable right hand approach to hybrid strums or triple stop guitar parts. I would of been 9 in 64 the year I started playing guitar bought in Sears shopping center after the Ed sullivan shows. So I missed your early days. Love to you and your music that touched me and all my friends.

"Played for food.." I hadn't really thought much lately about my early playing years until last week when my son asked me about it. I was in a few bands during High School, started playing the bass at 15 (1976), picking up a Mel Bay "learn the bass" book. My sister's boyfriend was selling his bass and amp, so I picked up the Ampeg Dan Armstrong acrylic bass, and Ampeg SVT with a 4x12 cabinet for $500. By the time I graduated h.s. I was in a band that gigged every weekend around the central part of lower Michigan. My mother moved for better pastures, so I basically went from couch to couch at friends' places, until our light/sound guy and I rented an old house. Lived on Doritos and Dew for the first year. Worked at a gas station part time, pumping gas and changing tires. Moved on to bigger and better things after a few years there...but life was so much easier back then. My cabinet just barely fit in the back of my '69 firebird, and the head and bass were in the front with me. I put 50k miles on that car, getting gigs where I could. Hope nobody gets upset I shared a story. But, watching Leland these last few weeks, have got me reminiscing...
Yes, that was a LRB reference. 😁

That story regarding how you were drafted into playing that Kay upright bass reminds me loosely of how Chicago trombonist James Pankow was drafted into his horn playing, when the most popular instruments for a ten year old were drums, guitar and saxophone. Very thankful that your transition from piano to bass was much more natural.
I took for granted that Phil played drums and sang at the same time before my teens. I always loved his material, but I failed to take proper stock in his drumming until I was roughly fourteen, wishing (at first) to be a male Karen Carpenter and found myself trying to sing behind my first set of drums with a headset mic like Phil’s been using since the No Jacket tour (if not longer). That’s when his drumming began impacting me.
Interestingly, I arbitrarily associate “Can’t Stop Loving You” with the *Hello, I Must Be Going* ballad “Don’t Let Him Steal year Heart Away”, because I didn’t first hear the latter on the radio until after the former was brand new.

Forget that Lee is a legend, if I didn't know that and ran into him at a Denny's, I'd still want to hang with this guy.

    Hi Lee
I have been a fan of Phils for 40 years, since Duke album.
I saw you perform with Phil, at the Manchester Apollo uk in 1985 you were both outstanding, and in Liverpool in 2017.
    Love your videos.

Lee Rit, amazing. Back then I had on record, the captains journey and Rit and some others. I was a big fan. I never even knew about Phil on that later stuff.

I love these videos. I was steered here by Rick Beato. I saw you playing with James Taylor in 1985 on his That's Why I'm Here tour in Portland, Maine. One of the coolest shows I've ever seen. Just a sea of bobbing heads into the music. Stay well.

I can totally relate. I remember at school I wanted to play lead guitar but the teacher suggested to me that I play the Triangle. I immeditely took to the gorgeous sound of that metal "ting" and I've never looked back. I still play it today in our local Salvation Army band.

Hi Leland. Here's a greeting from Denmark. Thank you so much for your fantastic efforts. It really made a difference for me to follow your musical journey through this terrible Corona crisis. It gives a good insight into how an "ordinary" ;-) American experiences the crisis. It has begun to brighten in Denmark, but there is still a long way to go. On the positive side, it has allowed me to introduce my children to my favorite bass player as well as real music of different genres with background knowledge. My family loves your "show me your finger" story but most of all your Santa Claus experience :-) Best regards from the Lars & family.

    Hey Lee,
Similarly: I started drums young, maybe grade 4. I'd tape the Top40 off the radio and shed all week. When it came time to join the school band the teacher said WHO WANTS TO LEARN BASS? and I was like, yeah. In Jr high I found Letterman's show *and MTV* (MuchMusic in Canada) and I joined the cult of sideguy forever. You were one of my guys. That was 35 years and 20 countries ago. Thanks for this. These hangs are lovely.

Leland, Thank you for your videos and the stories of your experiences. I'm a drummer and have appreciated you showing what you played in the projects you worked on, up close. You have been an inspiration me and many others. I remember seeing genesis way back in '73 in the Tower Theater in Philly. Phil was always an inspiration also. They changed my entire path, musically. Thank you again!
