    Great points Dan!
    I was told before my Pan-Am motorcycle trip that it's somewhat common for police to hold your license-plate at a ransom to extort you. While i never had a problem with it, i had two copies made (lot's of companies offering the services on online) that are the same as the original (license-plate number, but not the small details like VIN and registration sticker). Drive with the copies except for border crossings. A great insurance policy that didn't cost much, in case a plate gets stolen or confiscated i still have one copy extra and the original.

    Good points. As far as a shower, I bought a cheap 2 1/2 gal. hand pump up garden sprayer, Painted it black to quick heat up in the sun. I can get a 5 min. shower.

    I'm not a world traveler, but I wish I had one of those little fans the night I was in East Texas this past July. Wow! The humidity was off the charts! Made sleeping impossible. I couldn't deal with it so I cut my trip short and returned to Arizona a week early. Definitely going to get one of those fans.

    Another great video! I loved this one because it was REALISTIC. Often when I’m checking out videos about overlanding, I’m being told how I need 37” tires, insane suspension, etc. what I appreciate in this channel is the removal of your ego when it comes to what’s needed for your Jeep, and the practical approach to all of this. I just went on my first big adventure this year. While it want remote, I drove across the country from DC to Yellowstone, and camped in the park for 10 days. What an adventure! I’m going to keep watching here to see what I can do with my car to prep for the next expedition.

    Great video, i have 2 kill switches. The only problem you can have (depending on switch design), if you have to press a button for a number of seconds, here in South Africa, imagine sitting watching a herd of elephants, you scare them (or one is on heat) or they just decide to come your way, you panic and before you know it, Mrs Elephant has rolled you over or at the very least damaged your vehicle. So wise to have the ability to disable the kill switch for when you are in the middle of the bush with only big animals for friends!!!

    After moving to Nairobi I turned on my running lights for safety. Quickly got tired of get flashed and waved at. Good way to get stopped by cops too. Here in Nairobi though you a lot of new land-cruisers with auto running lights. So it’s likely becoming less of an issue in the city.

    You made some good points and especially for the winch, my first TJ didn’t have one but my second JK certainly did :) Thanks for the tips on avoiding bribes that is quite smart and true petty crimes for vehicles is an easy way to get someone pulled over. Btw the shower was an ingenious idea and would be a great way to clean off at the end of the day.

    Regarding the license plate. Probably depends on your local DMV or whatever, might be possible to request a replacement plate. Then use one of them for front plate when needed.

  • @endlesssaturday
    @endlesssaturday 4 роки тому +2

    The license plate suggestion is gold. I had never really thought about how it would be an appealing souvenir to a local. It does surprise me how people neglect comfort in favor of appearance. I bought a fan when I bought my butane stove, to me they are both indispensable. A fan is not just to keep cool at night but also blow bugs away or camp fire smoke, plus the one I got can use its battery to recharge something like a phone in a emergency and has a light. It's important to know what matters most to you as an individual though, personally a good pillow is mandatory as a game changer in comfort (no inflatable types or balls of clothing!) but you will never see a vendor at an overland expo.
    Although it is only relevant to local trips, the first thing I did to my truck when the pandemic hit was remove the license plate frames for plain black ones. I didn't want potentially upset locals seeing "Krazy Karl's Kars of Kalamazoo" in a small town hundreds of miles away. Avoiding confrontation will certainly make my trip more enjoyable.

    Hi! Again i really like your 5 tips. The front head light was a killer for me as it reminds me how kids would jump almost in the middle of the road screaming "lights lights ! " when ridding my Tenere in Ghana for 2 years. At the end I prefered they don't see me than having kids jumping in front of me. The killer switch idea is awesome! 👍👍. I will have it fixed on my 2018 JKU! GREAT idea! Thank you and be well !

    "Security" bolts work well for license plates too. They're basically a Torx head with a protrusion in the middle. The tools aren't impossible to find, but it's unlikely anyone in Africa or South America is going to have one lying around.
    In some vehicles like my Nissan, the daytime running lights can be disabled as simply as pulling the appropriate relay at the fuse box.

    I've usually fitted a kill switch in the fuel pump circuit. The reason being if the car is stolen it will start and move a short distance and then stop, apparently out of fuel. Easy to do on an old carburetor car, as they have enough fuel in the float bowl to go a short distance. Probably doesn't work so well with EFI though. Perhaps an alternative would be a timed relay that gives one minute to press the secret button.

    • @sailingspark9748

    Great tips! Have had friends who were shaken down by local police in Guatamala and Honduras for having no front license plate. I was not aware of the "daytime running lights" issue -- appreciate that very much +I have only used local rental 4x4s in Costa Rica). There is also a black "tube" shower available that mounts similar to a side awning that will heat water while you drive -- yeah, I know, probably more weight and one more thing to break it be tampered with outside the vehicle. Great video. You really do provide a lot of practical and excellent content!

    Like the new decal on the door.
    In Arizona a front license is not issued but many people have a custom one made to look like an original with their favorite saying in 7 letters or less. But now I am going out and rivet my rear plate on.
    I used a programmer to activate the fog lights full time. Safety first and when traveling in Canada one less issue to worry about.

    • @sailingspark9748
      @sailingspark9748 4 роки тому

      The metal bumper I have on my Disco has holes for two sets of fogs. The outer set I put some cheap foglights into with a low lumen LEDs and have them wired to a switch that has power when the truck is on. When I need them, I can hit the switch and have DRLs and never have to worry about turning them off until I no longer need them. Mostly I use them when towing my boats or in Maryland where they are required on some roads.

    Great video, yet again. I agree, everyone always seems to focus on the bling, rather than maintenance, and simple things.
    In BC we have both plates, so not an issue for us. :) I wonder though if a duplicate plate would be better installed on the vehicle, and keep the originals hidden inside?
    Our vehicles over the years have been automatics, so no clutch switch kill switch.
    I splice into either the fuel pump positive line, or the starter relay circuit. I prefer the fuel pump, because if you are ever left with a no start condition, tripped inertia switch or bad fuel pump relay or circuit, (which are all fairly common), you can simply apply power to the switch and the fuel pump will be on, and get you out of a bind.

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  4 роки тому

    I especially enjoy the practical stuff, like the piece on how to ship your vehicle. What an eye opener!
    In this video you just answered some of the questions I had, but I'd like to ask you one more:
    What did you do for bathroom?
    If you are wild camping away from people, going in the woods is not a problem. But if you are in a village with no public restrooms, finding a place to go #2 can be problematic.
    How did you work that out? Did you ever consider a cassette toilet?
    Thanks again, Man!

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Dee - in a village there is always somewhere to go - you just have to ask.
      In the wild as you said is no problem
      In a town big enough to have a gas station there will always be someplace to go.
      Lots of RVers have cassette toilets, it's not something I've ever thought about. I just don't need one.

      @@TheRoadChoseMe Running lights are a legal requirement in Namibia also, or headlamps on if you don't have any. In the UK we have the bizarre situation where newer vehicles require running lights to be fitted and working, but older vehicles (pre-2012 from memory) it's not the case at all and there's no requirement to retro-fit them! In fact in 1987/88 we had a dim-dip requirement which required the headlamps do be at 10-20% intensity on low beam (called dipped beam here, hence the term dim-dip) when the sidelights were on with the engine running. This bizarre rule was quashed by the EU because it didn't comply with European, or any other country's requirements.

I have used something similar while travelling in SE Asia. A little breeze on your face makes a world of difference when trying to sleep.

      Yep, I had some hassle in the US for my lack of front plate too. It's just so much easier to have one made up and stick it on there!

      I just tell them to stuff it. (Politely) My state doesn't issue a front plate, and it's up to him to prove otherwise, Go ahead, I'll wait. (I would never do this overseas, or outside the US.)

      A buddy was a detective in LA for 30 years. He is adamant it's illegal to drive a vehicle in California without a front plate irrelevant of where it's registered, and said he would give me a ticket if he saw it. In any case, he said he'd issue the ticket and let the court sort it out later and it won't be his problem (but it would be mine!)
      So it's much, much easier to have a front plate and not even get pulled over!

      @@TheRoadChoseMe A lot of states are going the route of "If the vehicle has a designated mount for it, you need to have one." My state, Nevada, is this way. A lot of car manufacturers are putting out cars without front plate holes.

    I saw a German registered motorcycle that had a homemade license plate here in Ohio. These guys were on adventure bikes and looked like they had ridden a long way.

    Regarding shower I run a different setup, i.e. a pop-up shower cabin plus an 8l inflatable dark shower sack that can be placed inside the cabin. Pump it up and enjoy a shower like at home. Well, almost. Pretty luxurious, yet cheap ensemble (under 100€). Additionally, I love Swiss army water sacks, capable of holding 20l of water. Again, cheap and solid as a backup.

      I tried the Nemo pump shower thing. It works, but it didn't work well enough. It did get hot in the sun.
      For 20 dollars I got a 12 powered sprayer with a drop in pickup with a pump. No need to lift it, you can drop it into a 55 fal Jerry can

    We really love our MSR bag and have gotten tremendous use out of it. You mention fines/extortion again in this video. How many times did you actually have to go to the bank and pay a fine based on front license plate or other such vehicle issues.

    Hi Dan! You mentioned the fan for sleeping while going thru hot weather countries, but what do you recommend for cold weather camping? I plan to do more of that this year inside my Jeep and would like to know what you used or did during your visit to Alaska.

      I built my Jeep for Africa, and while I lived in the Yukon for 4 years, I only camp under canvas in the summer months in Alaska. I think I'd have to install a heater if I wanted to use my vehicles in the winter.

      Do you really plan to explore in the winter? The roads and nasty and there's really not that much to see and do. The reality is that very, very few people enjoy overlanding in the winter.

      The Road Chose Me not particularly! But in the fall and spring, the temps here in the mountains do drop below freezing after the sun set, so just thinking of ways to stay a little more comfortable inside my rig and take advantage of dry weather before the snow does hit. 😊

    Hey, I was just wondering if you would do a video on what you take with you for personal protection? I'm definitely not talking about from people, but if you have comments on that I'd be interested to hear it as well, but more predatory animal protection. I do a lot of camping in Oregon and I had my first very close encounter with a mountain lion last weekend. two nights in a row. within 10 feet or so. I know you're based in canada and have no shortage of cougars up there either. Do you carry bear mace? did you cary anything in africa? Thanks and love the videos!

      Everywhere that I camp is bear, cougar and wolf country. Although they have all always been well behaved, I keep bear spray in the Jeep at all times. I take solid safety precautions, with regards to food storage and prep, but I keep the bear spray as well. I leave it in the Jeep, unless hiking. Everyone knows where it is and how to access it, just like the fire extinguisher.
      I wanted to add that I have been stalked by cougar, on several occasions. Although they have come very close, I have never been attacked. There is a really good video that shows a runner and his close encounter with a cougar. He ended up using bear spray, to deter the cat from attacking. It worked immediately and the cat ran away, post haste. The runner was able to continue, without further adventure.

      In my home I carry the all controversial .357. But traveling between states the laws are so different the risk of jail is worse then the risk of dangerous creatures. My main two go to's are bear spray and a flare pistol. I also carry an aluminum boat pole that extends to 10 feet with a large folding blade attached to one end. It's basically a spear at that point. When not for defense It's a hiking pole, an extendable pole to hang a camp light on and a dozen different uses.
