  • A step in the right direction getting a double glazed window installed into my temporary bedroom. It's a shame to remove the cast iron crittall window but it's been creating a torrent of damp, I'll use the pieces somewhere else.
I'm endeared with the green, linseed paint for the new wooden window, I've chosen a linseed oil paint as I like it for the same reasons I like hot lime mortars, it breathes.
After seeing and reading so much about modern plastic paints cracking prematurely, plus trapping moisture into wood thus making it rot quickly; I thought it was a no brainer to use a linseed oil based paint.
Like with many of these natural materials, a wonderful byproduct is that it is good for the environment.
The window is from wooden windows online, I'd prefer to have sourced one locally from a joiner but the convenience of putting my measurements in and the quick delivery (one week) pulled me in. The window is made from a soft wood, engineered redwood / pine.
Inside, a load of the recent hot lime plaster which goes onto of the wood fibre board had become saturated. Interestingly, it had weathered the storm remarkably well, the lime plaster has been letting the water evaporate without any problems.
I've still got a bit of making good to do with the window, hope you've enjoyed the video & thanks for watching, Max.

Pro-tip - less condensation issue in the bedroom if you simply remember not to breathe. Easy, really...

I’ve got a lintel on the inside & hoping to use bricks vertically on a wooden arched former for the outside support

Looks like the cat approves, he'll be asking to go out that way soon enough. Will you alter the one on the other side of the door so they match? Odd how that sponge was full of water...

I’m going to fit secondary glazing to that one as I quite like it. It’s a winters worth of condensation on the wood fibre board!

Hi nice job. Out of interest what mix were you trowelling on inside reveal before putting the frame in?

      Thanks!
It’s a hotlime mortar, a 3:1 mix of Nosterfield Sand / grit sand & kibbled quicklime, works out about 2:1 once the lime has slaked.

Great job and a lot of skill and patience in making sure everything is right. I am surprised to see you put the beading on the outside. I thought it always had to go on the inside for security.

Many thanks. Great point, it’s just how it came, I wonder if it’s a wooden window thing? The burglars will have to get past the guard cat if they try I suppose
