During the lockdown period, me and the vast majority of the population are craving to be outside once again.
In this weeks video, I try my hand at wildlife photography and build a hide and set up in the back garden.
It's amazing how many different birds visited the set up over the 7 day period and I'll hopefully be able to attract a lot more over the coming months.
If you're enjoying this style of voice over videos, then please leave a comment in the comment section below.
Thanks for watching and until next weeks video,

Thanks Darren, this is something I have done for years, and I liked the setup you made. For those of us with less DIY skill or just too lazy there is hope.
If you have a garden / yard setting up a feed and "Stage" outside a window can work as Darren did in his Man Cave. Another option is a hunter's blind which is no more than a camo tent with no bottom and blackout coating on the inner walls. The nice thing is it is portable and you don't need the permission of your partner to build a semi permanent structure.

I am a landscape photographer like you but seeing what you have done in your backyard has motivated me to get into wildlife photo which I toyed with a while back until I sold my long telephoto lenses. Watching how careful you constructed you outside "mini studio" has inspired me to get into again as we continue to stay home for now. I think I am going to spend some of my money in a long telephoto again and give it a try. Thank you again for sharing such a wonderful video. You have made my day with those beautiful photos. Nice homey presentation, but I wonder how Helen felt while she was working, he was outside playing. I also found it striking how he had everything he needed to create his blind and his feeding stations. I don’t think that most people would have that much just lying around. 😎 I’ll continue to watch his progress.

At 15:15 - I'm a wildlife photo nut, especially birds. As soon as I saw the duck cleaning itself I was shouting in my head *get ready!* -- get as close to water level as you can, switch to portrait orientation, put their head at the bottom of the frame, widen your field of view a little, punch up the shutter speed and wait for it. That stretching up and flapping the water off their backs will happen every single time when they're done with their bath. Well done!

Fantastic video and brilliant creativity. I'm pretty new to wildlife photography and I absolutely love it. Normally it gets you out and about in wonderful countryside but obviously for now it's whatever comes my way in the garden or whilst out on a walk from home. As long as you keep your expectations fairly grounded you won't go wrong. I liken it to fishing in a way, even if you don't get a killer shot it's just nice to be enjoying your surroundings, but then when you do get a shot you're proud of it is so rewarding! I was treated to a couple of Red Kites soaring over my house recently and got some really excellent shots. Just keep an eye out and you never know. I've been feeding birds in my small garden for several weeks now and slowly all the locals soon discover where to eat regularly. I've been contemplating a more natural perch set up and you've pushed me to explore what I can do.
Now, birds in flight is a genre all on its own in my opinion, challenging but exciting all the same. Enjoy yourself and I look forward to watching your videos.

I admire your patience Darren. Not aimed at us ladies with all those DIY skills & tools needed. Sadly my garden is not big enough. We gave up feeding the birds several years ago, as I can’t compete with my neighbour. He has a bird feeding station & many nesting boxes. The birds get through 2lb graited cheese a week, together with raisins, bird seed, sunflower hearts, fat balls & any other culinary delight for feather friends.I don’t think this is an area of photography for me.
As an enthusiast landscape photographer, I am struggling more than many, because I don’t do macro or intimate shot type photography either. I’m afraid I would not want any of it on my wall.
You have inspired many of your male subscribers I’m sure with this video which demonstrates what enthusiasm & determination can do.I can admire wildlife pictures & appreciate the hours of patience that has gone into the shot, but not for me. I am beginning to think I am the only one who is not photographing the cutlery, kitchen utensils & any other items round the house. This locked up & a chest infection is starting to get to me.Keep safe & well. Enjoy your feathered friends.

Wow what a garden, has all the elements you need, water, trees for birds, places to chill and a cracking observatory. Big tick to the gardening ☆. Really well put together video, love the hide setup, I did hear someone else say poking some wide pipe out hide gets the birds used to a lens being there. That image of the duck with the vail of water over her head was fanastic.
I think the log would look better if the end was broken instead of cut, could see if you can find any deadfall when walking. Also lard is good for diy fatballs. Looking forward to seeing how things progress. Happy birding & Keep safe

      Hi Jeff,
Now that I’m using the log as a feeding platform it’s taking quite a hammering and It’s getting quite worn already.
I know lockdown sucks (although I’m back to work) but the garden has given me so much pleasure over the last few weeks and I now look forward to getting home, cracking open a beer and have a few hours in the hide.
As the old saying goes “every cloud has a silver lining” and I can’t wait to get down to the river with the camera when lockdown is over.
Lockdown has really made me appreciate the joys of wildlife photography
      Take care bud

I’d recommend back button focus, continuous auto focus and maximum frame rate. And if you’re on the move a way to change ISO as quickly as possible. Upping the ISO is part of the game. Better a wee bit of noise and get the shot than miss it.

Based from my observations, many birds have a FOMO. When there is bird activity at a feeder, it will often attract the curiosity of other birds. When there is little activity at a feeder birds are less inclined to check it out. I think you were spot on with your decision to provide your local birds with a plethora of food from the get go!

Great video! Your progression from start to finish was enjoyable and especially the day when no photography could be done, (your wife's birthday). Most of all, your honesty in your abilities is refreshing as there are many channels that seem to look down on newbies. It seems that they feel one needs the best and latest gear in order to get the images that are the best. I belong to a camera club where this feel is rampant and tends to put off beginners as well as some advanced photographers. Again, great video and refreshing as well. I will subscribe and share this with my camera club in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Yours Michael.

You did well maximizing your gear’s potential (reach) in your background set up. Your gear is not exactly Shabby, you know. That 200-400 GM zoom is one of the best zooms around. I’d felt like I’d died and gone to birder heaven with that kit. Did you crop much. Your Sony R body certainly gives you that latitude. Great work . 😊

This was great to see your techniques and hear your thought process for placing the perches and setup a blind in your backyard. With the current lock down situation, I've already ordered additional bird feeders and seed and have already seen more birds visiting my backyard. Longest lens I have is 70-200mm so I might need to be a bit closer than you were but my big problem is the feeders are in a very open area and I have no place to setup a blind like you have, although now I have some ideas I to relocate the feeders and possibly setup a blind so I have a chance to get some great photos like you took.

Mind you it does help with building a hide when 'I'm just clearing out the shed' results in finding layers of plastic and serveral lengths of 2x4 rather than the three old pots of half used emulsion, a bucket of rusty screws and several boxes of old toys that are in my shed! 😂😂

I have done something similar and now I have hundreds of Robin shots, nuthatch images, squirrels etc
What I'm really looking to get is goldfinches
We have about four that are starting to appear and when I get the odd shot, I'm over the moon
It's really enjoyable to get so many different species in the can
Even had Woodpeckers on the fat ball feeders

When I switched from canon to Sony I needed to replace my 70-200 F4 and so the 100-400 looked like a nice replacement.

God job Darren. Wildlife photography certainly gets addictive! You could try a feeder with sunflower hearts in it, the finches will love it. I got a Dyson patented feeder that has a clever design to keep the grey squirrels off it as they become a pest once they find you are putting food out. Enjoy the highs and lows of nature :-)

As wildlife junkie and photographer: Birds "use" other birds as protection "aid". Crows and their relatives are daring and very smart birds. If they are ok to hang out somewhere, smaller birds know it's relatively safe to go there too. Woodpeckers are birds like that too. When woodpeckers are around, you'll see lots of other birds. When the woodpecker see's you, the rest of the forrest (or garden) in like a square mile will know something is up from it's alarm call.
About the ducky, some type of birds will get at ease fairly quick even when they see you. if you just go about your thing and continue doing so, they quickly learn that to be the new "normal". common blackbirds have that habbit too. i regulairly have them trailing me for worms when i'm turning over the soil in my garden.
On the AF area, i usualy tend to work on flexible spot small, it can helps to quickly composite on the "rules of thirds" (or whatever other way of compositing a frame) by pre placing my focus point. Expandable flex is not a bad idea either (and the birds eye-af is nice in that mode). it gives you some more leaway.
I loved your video and i don't know why i never came up with this myself. Time to start my own hidden gem location like this! Thank you and keep enjoying life!

      Morning Erwin,
What a fantastic comment and thank you for being so detailed.
Like you, I now mainly shoot flexible spot small and occasionally expand flexible spot, but to my knowledge, the A7R3 doesn’t have animal eye AF which is a real shame.
Thanks for all the useful tips and great explanation 👍

Love the duck photos and the bird in flight over the log is awesome! I'm a beginner myself and will be spending 2 weeks vacation in Nov. in the woods and fields of a local State Forest with some friends who will be hunting. Hi Heather,
Unfortunately the ducks haven’t returned yet. I do hope they do as it’s always nice to see them swimming in the pond.
The blue tits have tailed off a little as I think they’re nesting now, but this should mean plenty of activity in the next 2-3 weeks when they start to feed their young.

@@DarrenKnightPhoto All good this end thanks Darren 👍 I have a couple of feeders set up in my garden to try and capture some birds too, sadly though there aren't any trees around anymore due to people removing them so it's a bit hit and miss whether or not they find mine. Correction the greedy Pigeons have managed to find them and normally decimate them before the smaller birds get chance to have a feed.
