- In this recording I used the 4th harmonic pedal in resonance position only. The harmonic pedal was invented by Denis de La Rochefordière.

Note Bach's ingenuity in 3:30 - the first voice is playing the theme, while the third voice is playing the theme at x2 slower and the bass is playing the theme in mirror.
Big brain music.

Love this Paul, clean and great control, you've inspired me to have a try, thank you and well done!
Omggg!!! One of my faves from the WTC 2 book!! Thank you Paul!!! Most enjoyable performances.... “we” all 💕 you and appreciate all the time you take to record pieces for us... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Btw, have you ever considered posting audio versions of your music on Spotify? UA-cam playlist is great, but I know many fans like me use Spotify and it would be amazing to create playlists of your music there so we can enjoy it without needing the screen locked on youtube. Just a thought 💭 Thanks 🙏
@@ssmaktoum its just a thot but, ur so little…

0:34 got a bit funky for Baroque there, Bach.
I have hard time to do this sequence with right hand, even at low speed :o
Well wait until you hear the second variation of The Art of Fugue.
@@stratofus5779yeah same it’s a really tricky jump isn’t it!
Imposible no enamorarse de Bach, genera una gran fuerza de atracción en cada una de sus obras
Very masterful interpretation of the prelude! I truly believe this is one of your more outstanding works. It sounds like Bach himself is playing this!
Amazing skill. I am practicing book one. And looking forward to book two. Thank you dear Paul for sharing this.
I broke my fingers only by listening ,well played ,sir!
Una belleza esa pieza de J.S. Bach !! Felicitaciones a esa interpretación impecable Saludos desde Patagonia Argentina Fernando Hidalgo 3ro
The augmented entry of the bass voice in measure 19-20 is one of the coolest, most tragic moments in a Bach fugue. Dizzying counterpoint. Richter and especially Barenboim make this moment sound almost apocalyptic, although I also like Paul's more egalitarian approach à la Gould.

I'm starting to learn this prelude and it's proving to be quite the challenge for me. I don't know if my technique is good enough to play this, but practicing it can only help.
I have played some pretty tricky stuff. (Chopin etudes, Grieg Concerto) I'm learning this Prelude and Fugue I have never struggled so much learning a piece of music. However I strongly encouradge you to finish learning it. You'll come out a millions times better as a pianist and will be grateful to be able to play and understand such beautiful music.
The prelude reminds me very much of the presto part in the C minor prelude of Book 1. Perhaps Bach wanted to expand on the musical potential of that part.
That’s exactly what this prelude is
En el compás 18, la primera nota de la mano izquierda es la natural en la partitura, sin embargo el pianista toca la bemol. Sé que hay diferencias de versiones en ese punto, incluso también está la opción de hacer re bemol, a continuación del la en cuestión.
fugue at 02:28
Just learned this piece it’s so fun to play!
Wonderful Sir, as usual ! Seems to be really easy for you, please keep going
Amazing!!!! Bravo!!! Well done mr. Barton!!!
Weird how the prelude and fugue didn't end on a picardy third cadence. Oh well...
Shut up
Você está tocando meu repertório dos Prelúdio e Fugas😊👍
Great performance. One of my favorites. I guess there is a misreading at 1:28 and 2:07. Bar 22 fourth note is A flat, you play G,
True: noticed that high and wonderfully tense A-flat missing (m.22)- the G will do twice as a cover-up *smirk* . The pieces are difficult, no doubt.
@@MR-si2xx , to be honest, I don't think so about prelude. (I learning it now)
@@MR-si2xx , but fugue is really hard, of course.
I like the tempo for fugue but what is your explanation at 3:50? In the notation voice at that point in treble is not Des but D...
My fav prelude
0:08 prelude
2:28 fugue
prelude measure 23 right hand fourth semicroma is Ab. not G
el preludio es muy parecido a sus allemandes de las suites!! genial interpretación...
Coincido con sus palabras, tiene un carácter muy bailable.
Très belles interprétation
Wonderful! Have you ever considered recording Bach's Partita No. 2 or 6?
Have you considered? Have you considered?
I love this stuff. Just love it!
3:55 gave me goosebumps
At 2:38 why A on the treble clef is written equivalent to G but is played like A flat?
And why do you have to individually make A flat even though it already is in the key signature?
The editor of this piece probably put the flat there in case you forgot it, or to make it more clear that the A natural doesn't apply on to the next meter. You aren't supposed to play it as a G.
@@dimitrisefstratiou4240 Thanks a lot for clearing that doubt.
Unlike most Bach songs, Prelude no. 2 doesn't sound AS scary as the other Bach pieces.
1:29 that's an a sir not a g

What does Paul work as, is he a pianist?a painter/artist? Or a UA-camr?
he´s all above plus a taxi driver and a full time surgeon
Finlay Charleson he is all of us. We are all Paul

Bar 22 on the prelude was played c e f g (twice), other than that it's pretty nice
Yay i got the 100 comment also well played i just got asigned this piece of music and this realy helps me to form the way i will play this
Hi Paul. This is gold...
I've got a question: should I start learning a new piece before knowing every piano major/minor scale that exists? Or should I learn all the music theory before anything?
Martín Orozco Before paul drop you a golden advice, please allow me to speak my opinion.
I wouldn't say my belief is absolute, but I believe that theories are learnt from playing rather than the opposite.
Of course, not knowing all 12 keys will make your attempt on more difficult pieces harder, but it's important to apply scales practically with a piece of music. With no musical context, running scales only will not help you at all.
I would say learning theories and technical stuffs organically is much more rewarding then learning them one by one systematically before starting a piece of music.
Again, it's my honest opinion, as I seen my students adopt this method have improved their playing.
The answer is to learn pieces alongside studying music theory (i.e. scales)
Thanks for your advices!
Depends a lot on your character. If you want to be as efficient as possible you'll divide your study time in segments and allocate a specific category to each segment. One could be scales, one arpeggios, one could be improvisation, one learning a piece, music theory, sight reading, and so on.
If you have low frustration tolerance however, or get easily bored, then the best course of action would be to study what you would find most enjoyable. If there is a simple song that you like a lot, pick it up and listen to your own playing. Then fill in the gaps as you identify them to be more invested in your studies.
If you have high frustration tolerance and get easily bored (e.g. if you crave challenge) then pick a piece that you really like and make an efficient practice routine out of it. The progress will be slow depend on the piece due to the steep learning curve, but in my case that was preferable to learning pieces with a simple repetitive structure (to which I gladly came back later as I could just play them and then focus on intonation and character).
Basically, figure out what kind of learner you are then build your practice routine around your personality to get the best long-term results. Or, if you hate figuring things out on yourself do some course or get a teacher and have them adjust your schedule for you.
I'm just starting to learn playing piano by notes and I'd say you need practice playing real music and real musical moves first and all the theory after that. The music is very much about creating tensions outside of the played key and theory does not say much about that. I've been playing keys casually for years and always did that inside the key but that's quite boring. Tred learning theory but that didn't help much. After practicing a few Bach's pieces (a couple from AMB book and a single from Clavier book) I suddenly started to feel and play tensions in the music in a musical way and just a few months of such practice gave me more than years of casual learning theory on youtube.
Great piece!

I feel like Bach heard one of Scarletti pieces decided to mimic it.
Anonymous Anonymous i was just thinking of how this sounds like a sonata...bach didnt do sonatas lol i wonder what was he thinking with this song
Jackson Briggs he wrote a couple, I think
@@thereyougoagain1280 He wrote violin sonatas, though not in the sonata form
Wow, you're right. I like both Bach and Scarlatti, and as someone who has listened to both of their pieces, it does sound like Scarlatti.
Hi, Paul. May I ask you who's the best online teacher or mentor that I could watch for keeping learning? I started playing piano a few months ago, and I know your teaching is oriented to intermediate/advanced levels.
Thanks for your patience.
If you have the money always go for a professional teacher its so much better
Bravo! Genial!!!
Mr. Barton, do you think that upper body weightlifting slows down the fingers? Are you familiar with any virtuosos that also lift weights? Light weights and push-ups vs heavy weights?
I am a pianist who also lifts weights and I can say without a doubt lifting makes you better at piano as you have the ability to apply high amounts of force through little muscular expressions making faster pieces I am able to play flight of the bumble bee, so it doesn’t slow you down but the hand cramp is real sometimes extended pieces can be a task to tackle
I doubt heavy weight lifting helps you. I believe fingers dont have muscles.
Of course fingers have muscles and it can slow your play down if you don't let your body have enough recompensate. It comes to supercompensation. Stretching the fingers after training is good and take more breaks.
Conan Edogawa , google it, fingers have no muscles, just joints.
Hi Samuel, I think I found the perfect example for you. Please search for Kimiko Ishizaka on Wikipedia. She's a professional weight lifter and a pianist!
Although I wouldn't give myself the same advice. But then again, who am I again in front of a live example. Hope it helps :)

why the tonal answer here?
In measure 22 of the Prelude, in the right hand, on the sixteenth note before beat 2 (the A flat), you played a G instead of the A flat. Why?

Left hand in your fugue needs work for the tempo but your prelude is amazing my man
Bach's music is so perfect, i cannot gain skill despite a multitude of practices.
???: How 'bout increasing yer left hand technical skill bro?
Oh yeah, i forgot that my left hand is far less skilled than my right hand.
Remember, ladies and gentlemen, Bach's music requires equal skill of LH and RH.
