Matrix Deer vs. 338 Lapua: Shockwave or Optical Illusion?

This was a narrow miss on a Mule Deer buck with a 338 Lapua at 414 yards. The bullet appears to move the deer's flesh out of the way as it passes, but some would say that the effect is actually an optical illusion created by the bullet's vapor trail.

The shockwave looks amazing, it looks like it created the mirage affect almost like a mirror

That is one of the strangest things I've seen. It has to be heat waves, or shock waves, but WOW! Thanks for showing this.

I think it has a lot to do with the camera angle, vapor trail and mirage effect of different air tempatures at distance. Much like in the movies the camera angle can make an actor appear to hit another actor yet miss by inches. Fun video of a great near miss.

To me it looks like the bullet whet side ways with the tip more to the right and the back to the left and slowed it down a lot

I must ask was it hit or not?..deer should of taken off after that shot but seemed to just stand there looking and what rifle and caliber was that the power of that shockwave was crazy

That shot missed. The next shot hit true.
The rifle was a Savage 110 BA Stealth in 338 Lapua, and surprisingly, it probably did less meat damage than what is typical from a 270.
