Are New Ethics Rules Needed as Gorsuch, Roberts & Thomas Face Questions over Finances?

  • Three conservative Supreme Court justices are now embroiled in a growing ethics scandal about their personal and financial connections. Recent reporting has revealed that Justice Neil Gorsuch sold property he co-owned to the head of a major law firm that has since had many cases before the court, Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose lavish gifts and payments from billionaire and conservative activist Harlan Crow, and the wife of Chief Justice John Roberts was paid over $10 million in commissions as a job recruiter placing lawyers at elite law firms. Legal experts and lawmakers are increasingly pushing for ethics reform on the high court, with the Senate Judiciary Committee holding a hearing on the issue on Tuesday. “Because they don’t have an ethics code, you don’t know whether they’re doing things in an above-board way,” says Vox senior correspondent Ian Millhiser. He also discusses growing frustration that California Senator Dianne Feinstein has not resigned her seat amid a prolonged absence from the Senate due to illness, which is stopping Democrats from confirming federal judges.

I think there is a link with Scalia's school, Harlan Crow, and remaining republican supreme court justices. They have tried to make the US government more conservative by forcing policies that were against the will of the majority of the people. Religious Freedom, Citizens' United, 2nd Amendment, cut taxes for the rich, cut oversite for financial institutions, Military Industrial complex, and cultural issues. The corruption runs deep amongst supreme court justices.

But I am not going to worry about the Gorsuch's, or the Roberts' or the Thomas because they will have their day in the Highest Court. All who have suffered at the hands of these hypocrites will one day be privy to their trial. There, these Justices, like all of us, will be questioned and judged on our actions.

It's very simple, SCOTUS should have, at the very least, the same ethics rules as the rest of the federal bench. It makes no sense that they should be treated in any other way. In fact, you could make a case they should be held to even more stringent standards since they are a "higher" court.

If any branch of our government should represent the 'adults' in the room, it should be the Supreme Court. These judges should be highly experienced, and known for their integrity, ethics, and respect for the law and the Constitution. The current Court has lost a substantial amount of the populace's trust, as well as their respect for several of the Justices, and are waiting for the Chief Justice or the Legislature to do something about it - other than act defensive. Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Barrett - none of these people have any business sitting on the highest court in the country, and with each day, further denigrate the reputation of the Court. The lack of a 'code of ethics' for the Court has only allowed people like this to get away with deeply problematic behavior.
