The very low turn out secured him the win and even in the popular vote numbers of those that did vote he only got a tiny, tiny fraction over the 50% needed. The Dems need to look at why people didn't turn out to vote at all. Most Americans obviously didn't want him but they all have to pay for the inactions of others 😮

European countries may be reluctant to destroy their economy by raising military spending but they have raised to the occasion in case of Ukraine. Several european countries have made multi-year deals with Ukrain about military support and rebuilding the country. European countries also received many, many refugees.

The saddest part will be when he calls me with the "great" news that his bad-daddy has now given him permission to agree with me about Ukraine, and I need to break it to him that that doesn't fix it.
The problem with the US is that their viewpoint...or that of some of their leaders...tends to be very insular. News coverage tends to focus on issues closer to home and international news doesn't get much of a look in, if you are looking for balance it isn't there. (Caveat: I have lived and worked with Americans, spent time in North America, and the average level of knowledge of world events was shockingly poor).
As a European, I have a worry that we do need to more than double our defence spending since I fear that relying on the USA like we’ve done too much in the past is no longer the right course for the future. The USA looks like it’s becoming an unreliable partner. And Europe might have to go it alone for security. And also stop buying US weapons, to be sure the US can’t let us down by blocking exports of weapons or ammunition in a crisis situation.
The US has shown itself increasingly unreliable over the past six years: first with the betrayal (Trump) of the Kurds, who had done most of the heavy lifting against ISIS; then with the shameful runaway scrape (Trump & Biden) that abandoned the Afghanis - against the strong opposition of the other NATO countries who had also spent their own blood and treasure there since 9/11. Had the US not have abandoned Afghanistan, I have no doubt that Putin would not have invaded Ukraine and Xi would not be threatening Taiwan. So, yes, it’s been apparent to European nations that the US is an unreliable partner and perfidious friend for quite some time now.
You worded exactly my opinion. We should not get Europe hostage to the US. And not support the US economy with the kit we buy. Same for Israel by the way, meaning we need to make it ourselves or diversify and get more from South Korea. Some encouraging signs such as the collaboration between UK and France, and Netherlands buying the next subs in Europe. Then again we have our own issues requiring unanimous support for anything between 28 countries and you know who are included. Lastly, the defense industry currently can’t deliver fast enough so doubling it? We apparently live in a different reality.

Trump changing his position will do one or both: piss off his supporters who believed he was going to deliver, and show to our allies and adversaries that he is not to be taken seriously. Also, I would expect such negotiations to be handled by diplomacy behind the scenes rather than by the president via the media.
Yes, I gather that once Trump was told about it he started adding access to it as a basis for war loans. I think the mineral wealth was part of why Putin is happy to destroy entire cities and remove the people: mining doesn't need huge populations. Lots of other minerals there too - not even counting the scrap metal bonanza they've created. I don't think he was counting on so much farmland well fertilised for use once the mines are cleared.
Another thing to point out is that NATO defense spending as a percentage of GDP is not really measured by the countries that report it in quite the same way. For example, I believe the US includes pensions and healthcare for soldiers and veterans as defense spending, whereas some other countries don't. If NATO countries were to be held to the voluntary target as if it was a mandatory one, they'd really need to standardise what actually qualifies as defense spending. This becomes awkward with state owned defense producers, as well as other issues.
The only thing he is serious about is getting personal gain from holding office. What we need to hope for is that the MIC's interests align with Ukraine's victory enough that they use their corruption for good as a side effect.
On the 'fulfilling US commitments'.....I'm remembering the Kurds during his 1st term. Didn't bother him to walk away from US commitment then. Of course, that wasn't a commitment to Europeans.

In Europe we are traders and if you want to negotiate, we will also ask a competitive bid from China for their protection, China would love our Dutch ASML lithography machines for their 3, 2 and 1 nm chips. We are also independent countries and only our parliaments decides, how much we spend on defense! In my country the Dutch parliament decides about budgets since 1579! Thus our democracy is ~200 years older and thus more mature than the clearly adolescent Trumpian democracy in the USA!!

For the mess that Foreign policy is. The Best Bang for the American dollar is Ukraine. To have an ally of it's location is absolutely great. Strategic Access to Eastern Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Ukraine is also a great Economic bet good with Agriculture, Natural Resources etc., Her people are for sure strongly Democratic , very Grateful for the Help, and Is and would be a Strong Ally against Putin which would weaken North Korea, Iran and China and would be a Great Stable influence in the area. If Trump does not support Ukraine, it will be one the U S 's Greatest Strategic Blunders, and will cost us Trillions later. And we got a few of those.
There is no need to increase defence spending to any large degree other than to supply Ukraine with what it needs. Russia is now a spent force requiring many years to re-supply to any level that would pose a threat conventionally, as well as a fundamental shift in warfare doctrine with modern equipment. Ok it's still a nuclear power, but I think we already have this covered. The Russian economy is pretty much in freefall and Putin's leadership may be questionable. Ukraine now needs manpower to continue the fight, unlike NATO which has plenty to utterly overwhelm a direct conflict with Russia.
We need to also remember that the federal highway system was a defense spending thing. Lots of infrastructure stuff that the EU needs to do anyway can be called defense spending.

Let's take the EU alone, 2% of EU gdp is roughly 350 billion. This is more than 3 times what the kremlin said it would spend on its military next year. (I personally think they don't have that money, and it's way less...) The EU alone also has more than 3 million professional soldiers. Definitely better trained than the russian conscripts. So can someone please explain why anyone would think we still need to increase spending even more??? Seems insane to me
And the EU could simply get their spending up by exclusively spending their defense money inside the EU. That and the EU has spent a lot of the EU budget over the last 2 decades in the East. Poland for example now can afford US made F-35's and Korean tanks. Just imagine them buying French Rafale jets and German tanks. so IMHO russia has bled itself dry and all their former allies from the Warsaw pact are now in the EU and NATO.
@jessicayoung1190 I googled it again, and it was 3.4 million in the 90ies. Today it's actually about 2 million. Which is still double what the russian army had BEFORE it invaded Ukraine.
@jl-7992 the NATO budget is larger than the double the entire russian economy, if you believe the numbers the kremlin is putting out. If they really are not capable of defeating russia, then we really should be asking what they're even doing with all our money....

From memory the UK spent 10% on defence during the 1950s, they also ran the NHS without issue, and built millions of council homes. However, there was rationing and the top rate of tax was 99%.
Keep in mind that the UK had received a massive amount of investment from the USA in the early 1950s under the Marshall plan to build back from the economic, infrastructure and military loss that resulted from WW2. Those were exceptional times and it's not a fair comparison to the modern day

Also, I would expect such negotiations to be handled by diplomacy behind the scenes rather than by the president via the media.
Oh, don't worry, it can only piss off his supporters. Your allies and adversaries still remember 4 years ago.
Does he know he isn't the king of NATO?
Trump’s playing hop scotch while NATO is playing chess. So embarrassing
More like playing with himself.
😅😅😅
I really believe that the only game he's capable of playing is Candy Land.
Actually, some in Eastern Europe outspend us as a percentage of GDP
NO NO NO! He will end it in 24 hours!!! He said so himself.
Moreover, "spending more" doesn't necessarily mean "buying more from US' military industrial complex"
Thank you for the excellent content! 🇨🇦
Belle ROCKS doesn’t she! 😊 (Kinda like you! 💙)
👋🏻🇺🇸 I agree with you Crystal.
Good afternoon.
@@Erin-ThorHowdy neighbor.
@@MBMCincy63Good afternoon MB.
All of Trumps positions are fluid. They vary depend on his mood, who he is talking to, and most importantly what benefits him the most.
"Trump" and "fixed position" ? Those 2 things are incompatible.
I do appreciate you Belle & your calm reporting.
I already knew that you couldn't believe a word out of drumps mouth ....pre or post election.
💯🎯& well said ‼
Good afternoon, Tom.
@donaldmrambojr5695 Howdy Donald.
We can't trust these reports etheir
Agreed on all points!
Found out today that Ukraine has 10% of global Lithium deposits. I'm starting to resolve all this strife.
Hope he's serious about continued support for Ukraine.
2 minutes later he can't remember what he blurted out
Can't see it sadly
The only thing he is serious about is getting personal gain from holding office. What we need to hope for is that the MIC's interests align with Ukraine's victory enough that they use their corruption for good as a side effect.
On the 'fulfilling US commitments'.....I'm remembering the Kurds during his 1st term. Didn't bother him to walk away from US commitment then. Of course, that wasn't a commitment to Europeans.
Trump ONLY plays unnecessary reindeer games. Like Redoing NAFTA with little changing.
Belle, you are so knowledgeable, clear and concise, honest and beautiful! What a wonderful person to go along with Beau. And you do it all in under 5 minutes, just like Beau, I really like that. Trump is like a child with a new toy, he is not even President and he thinks he has all the power in the universe. Its really gone to his head. When in reality, he belongs in jail. Trump is the worst thing that could have ever happened to this country.
Listen to what they said, and watch what they do!😉
In Europe we are traders and if you want to negotiate, we will also ask a competitive bid from China for their protection, China would love our Dutch ASML lithography machines for their 3, 2 and 1 nm chips.
We are also independent countries and only our parliaments decides, how much we spend on defense! In my country the Dutch parliament decides about budgets since 1579! Thus our democracy is ~200 years older and thus more mature than the clearly adolescent Trumpian democracy in the USA!!
So - recapping: Trump is and always has been full of it.
👏
Between the ravings of Hair Furor, Ego Muskrat and Rat Fink Kennedy, we are trapped in the most stupid timeline possible.

Who knew foreign policy could be so complicated?
Love the "bigly" refrain!
Hopefully he will never be in office again!
Good afternoon Belle 👋🏻🎄🎁. How nice would it be to have an intelligent incoming administration on the horizon?
Apparently not many shared this beautiful thought.
We had an intelligent incoming administration 4 years ago.
We need to also remember that the federal highway system was a defense spending thing. Lots of infrastructure stuff that the EU needs to do anyway can be called defense spending.
Happy Christmas, Bell & all you Ranch hands. Bigly.
And the same to you, too - in spades!
Why would it be bad to not be able to believe anything the President says? Markets don't care about predictability do they.
Thank you for the reality check Belle.
The US has spent less than 5% of GDP on defense since around 1990.
Thirty-five seconds in, I was thinking the Curious George patch should have been upside-down, based on the orange one's long term alliance with Putrid, er, Putin.
Consistency has never been a thing for the orange one, though, so who knows?
America. Have you no shame?! Y'all have the leader you deserve.
I didnt vote for him
I believe Ukraine has some of the rare minerals that China has banned export to the USA. We need those minerals badly..
Who will save our country from this much stupid?
goal post successfully moved, 10 percent next? it's not about the exact amount, it's about being able to justify his actions.
That's waht he's aiming for , etheir that or using the refusal on 5% to pull out of NATO
We’ll see what happens, can’t trust trump any further than we can throw him
At his weight, that's not very far at all.

They want Harris in office.
Or they want to hear from Potus elect Musk not Scrotum Trump.

I'm primarily a 1 issue voter, for supporting Ukraine. If President Trump does right by Ukraine and maintains or increases US military aid, I can't believe I'm typing this, but I'll have a grudging respect for him and a huge sense of relief.
It would be a miracle, but we need to wait until he actually does it.
You're delusional.

Good to see you Victoria!

My maga associates are trying to justify Trumps backpedaling on his promises. Cant wait until he takes office to see the war cope
He said the day after he was elected.
He said whatever he thought would get him elected.
If only he weren't so busy being a dictator...
As a Canadian, I am completely onside with us spending at least 2% of our GDP on defence.
Generally you get wiser as you get older. Not true with the orange doughboy.
Not even true in general; just look at all the old timers that make up trumpy’s cult.
@@WhatIsThatAvi True. I guess I should say: Normal people..
@@labspeciman7402 I would suggest that people show more and more of their true, inner selves as they get progressively older.
If an elder appears wise, they’ve likely always been that way, even if they were too young and impulsive for a time to show it.
Likewise, if an elder appears to be a total jerk, it’s a safe bet they’ve always been and now no longer cares who knows it.
@@WhatIsThatAvi I'm 61 and am a shit ton wiser than even 10 years ago. The day I stop evolving is the day I die. I'm embarrassed how people my age act, But being a jerk can be necessary when dealing with trumpanzees. Sure as hell doesn't pay to be nice to them..
we begin and end our lives bewildered and confused, knowing nothing.
Switching on position again and again is only allowed for Trump and is hypocritical for anyone else
Blatant idolatry is ugly as hell
Let's take the EU alone, 2% of EU gdp is roughly 350 billion. This is more than 3 times what the kremlin said it would spend on its military next year. (I personally think they don't have that money, and it's way less...)
The EU alone also has more than 3 million professional soldiers.
Nato head also said they are not ready...
EU 3 millions professional soldiers ? that is a good joke .
It’s the same thing all right. Political promises in order to win an election. Also referred to as “lies”.

Or maybe his wannabe foreign policy is just the same as his debate strategy: Gish Gallup. Just throw out a batch of notions whether true or not, hoping for confusion not clarity.
Watching this video after I just finished watching a speech of him talking about Ukraine and Russia. Not sure if the rambling toddlerspeak is representative as "foreign policy." (Geez)
NATO would be wise to move the US to the children's table for the foreseeable future.
Okay, it's been a vew years since I studied psychology, but I do remember a particular lecture about negociations. Yes, when negociating, you should always try to be the first to drop a number and also to make it a little higher than the price youre actually aiming for. However, there is a line. If you overdo it, the people at the other side of the table will disregard you as unreasonable.
Great to hear that old Beau-ism about Mitch again
From memory the UK spent 10% on defence during the 1950s, they also ran the NHS without issue, and built millions of council homes.
However, there was rationing and the top rate of tax was 99%.
Keep in mind that the UK had received a massive amount of investment from the USA in the early 1950s under the Marshall plan to build back from the economic, infrastructure and military loss that resulted from WW2. Those were exceptional times and it's not a fair comparison to the modern day
Conversely keep in mind that the UK was also paying pack lend-lease until 2006.
Thank you thank you! 💙💛
Senator McConnell's article is in _Foreign Affairs_ magazine.
It's funny you mention the 25th Amendment because I have a sneaking suspicion that Ancient Orange isn't going to make it past a month after the inauguration before it becomes President Vance.
I think it is already President Musk and Vice President Ravaswamy
@@elizabethmcmanus6269Vance might be hard pushed when the battle starts about who's allowed into the Oval Office
They might need MAGA support for the midterms, then dump him. Unless he declares martial law and scraps the constitution before then. Bingo cards need to be huge or made of rubber to cover the possibilities.
I'm amazed he doesn't think its just a protection racket.

Alternatively, his demand for 5% GDP military spending could be setting up his excuse to say "FINE! You're on your own!" when Europe doesn't accept it.
