If you've never played Star Ocean 2: Till the ends of time (Playstation 2), this is exactly the plot behind the entire game.
Hell, we ourselves make games where we write characters that explicitly either wonder or acknowledge that they’re in a game so not too unexpected that our “programmers” knew we’d get to this point someday.

By the way, there exists such thing as game ticks. If a simulation like this were to take a really long time, the people in the simulation probably wouldn't know because for the people of the simulation and the simulation itself would only move by on tick (or Planck Time), while outside of the simulation, any amount of time could have passed, if the concept of time even exists outside of the simulation. Also, their rules of existence could be entirely different from ours, so who's to say they even have the concept of data limits, or data itself.
That’s actually a really interesting point. “Data”, “particles”, etc. are concepts we understand in here but could be as made up specifically for us like we make up “power ups” or certain world elements that fit in the world of the game but have no analog in our real world & are just concepts we imagine & insert in.
It depends, if you consider your game running in one process on a single machine, that is true.
However when your game is distributed among different processes (or even threads) you will have some part of it running quicker than other. Either a mechanics quicker than another (some light reflection slower than solid collision ?) or some area (server instance) quicker than another area (like black hole ?).
In Eve Online for example, the different solar system are in their own instance and hosted on different server. Some highly populated systems are even hosted on a single server to avoid impacting other system.
If too much computation is required, the game will slow itself for all players in this system. It happens during big space battle with hundreds of players.
However for anyone playing in solar system hosted by a different machine, you will still continue to play at the same normal game speed. Looks a little like relativity isn't it ?

The flaw with the reasons why we aren’t in a simulation is that all those points make the assumption that if we are in a simulation, the “real” world would use the save set of rules, ie: the same physics, and have similar constraints. But that would be highly unlikely.
I agree that some physics would be different from the reality running the simpler reality, like physical law more complex, or having more dimension.
But in term of mathematics and information theory it would still be the same. So maybe we would be able to recycle some of our thermodynamics law.
As for the "Yanny/Laurel" debacle, the whole reason that some people hear different things is probably because both are being said at the same time, and the brain decides to pick only one up. I found that out because, when putting my ear next to the speaker, I heard a higher pitched "Yanny" and a lower pitched "Laurel". Some people probably hear different pitches better than others.
I can easily hear them both at the same time.

It also sounds like Green Stone, Grey Skull, Beast mode, and a bunch of other words I thought about. It's an audio illusion of the same caliber as a spinning spiral. Kind of interesting, thanks for upload.
Another simulation-like effect: if you've ever played a video game, or better yet tried to code one, you'll know that collision detection is very hard. There are often glitches that involve objects clipping through each other when they should be solid. You might think that doesn't happen in the real world... but then you learn about quantum tunneling and realize is absolutely does :D
There is one thing I disagree with, though: you said if we were in a simulation, we'd have no way of measuring anything outside the simulation. That's not necessarily true. There are various exploits that we can do with computers where you can learn information about the computer your code is running on from the code itself, even if that information isn't meant to be available. For instance, timing attacks use carefully constructed data operations, then time how long each one takes to complete, and from that you can work backwards and deduce what's in the computer's memory outside of the code that's being run. So if we are in a simulation, there may still be techniques we could run to measure properties of the "simulator" without leaving our confines.
yeah, but what if the Computer running our simulation has an anti virus or other measures against something like this and stops the whole simulation the moment we try an exploit to get informations about the system we are running on.
Any atempt in trying to find out if we are in a simulation in this way could mean certain doom for the whole universe.

If it really is a simulation who cares if it ends, it's a simulation lol... meaning it can simply be restarted and the same thing will occur if the variables arent changed... BUT computing our universe would be incredibly resource-intensive (assuming there are finite resources in the universe computing our universe), so it would be against the better judgement of whoever is computing us to mess with our simulation because screwing it up would mean they would need to start over (assuming starting over is problematic and assuming time or maximum simulation speed exists in the outside universe) or might actually screw up the entire experiment since it was interrupted or affected by the outside universe, which would be synonymous to us trying to test the horsepower of a car while a hurricane was blowing on it from behind thus twisting our results.
@@JoducusKwak Also, I kind of think that if we were a simulation, it is such an incredible simulation, that it isn't really a simulation, it is just a secondary reality or universe of its own... Sounds kind of funky to humans but if you think about it, what does it matter... when we run computer programs they are just as real as anything else in our universe since they are executed within the confines of our universe which means they are a part of our universe... so if we are a simulation, we are made of the outside universe that is simulating us, and thus we are no different but we could then in theory potentially be an unusual form of matter or energy within that outside universe in comparison to the entity simulating us... so that would be like biological matter (humans) simulating something by using electricity... we are also in part made of electricity, but we don't exactly live inside of a circuit board of our computers... so if we were a simulation, we would potentially be the equivalent of electricity in a circuit board of the universe that is simulating us... Trippy right?
@@JoducusKwak It also kind of apeases the mind to consider that if we really are a simulation, then we are just as real as the universe simulating us since our simulation would need to exist within the universe that is simulating our universe... so at least we are made of the same stuff at the very fundamental level or our universe exists in this same manner... so that would mean that our existence is just as real as the existence of our simulation overlords.

The Yanny/ Laurel thing is most likely the subjective nature of our senses filling in blanks. However, I think this could be a simulation, I am not convinced either way. If the Yanny/ Laurel thing is a glitch, then the double slit experiment (where light acts as waves or particles depending on whether or not it is being measured) is an Easter Egg.
He is probably 1 of the few scientists, who would be fun to have at parties. He seems genuine, enthusiastic, and informed. That's rare combination.

The brainstorm/green needle segment you played was definitely brainstorm all 4 times for me. The original audio is a pretty low bit rate, but harder to distinguish between one or the other than the sample in your clip of it.

The speaker is a factor because a higher quality speaker emit a broader spectrum (richer) sound so it has higher chance of altering user's perception more readily; it even sounded different. I use cheap earphone and I always hear Laurel & Green Needle 100%.
This particular illusion was actually shown on a episode of "Through the worm hole" with Morgan Freeman. It's pretty crazy. If you play the audio and add the video of your mouth wording a different sound, then close you eyes you can actually hear it change even though the audio never changes. Just goes to show that our vision influences what we actually hear. Very trippy.

When they say our computers are in capable of processing a simulated reality such as our own, I say that is a faulty argument. The system that is processing our simulation is in a different world that different world could have additional Dimensions or additional laws in which make it far more complex than our universe allowing their computer systems to be significantly more powerful than ours. When we simulate a computer system within a program it is always weaker and less complex the actual reality outside of that program
look at all our games today do you really think that they could ever reach the complexity of our reality? I don't think we will ever have the processing capability of simulating our reality 100%. Just as the scientists said, which would imply that whatever system is operating this reality is far more complex then this reality

Is your game just as advanced as our reality? No, we take shortcuts to make sure the game looks good and runs as best as possible.
Same applies to our Reality, its composed of 3 spatial dimensions and 1 time dimension, we have our laws of Strong/weak/electromagnetic/gravity. All this is complex to us, but to what is computing this? It may be simple.
We don't know what lies beyond our reality, for all we know the reality beyond this has 10 dimensions, 15 different universal laws, FAR more advanced than our own existance.
In a Reality like that a computer as simple as ours are to us, can process this entire universe with ease.

And glitches happens only few times afterwards the computer automatically corrects itself. ...we don't get to see glitches everytime in a game ....well if yanny and laurel was a glitch we could have heard the illusionised sound only a few times ....but for most of us we hear the same sound either yanny or laurel again and again. ....
So it's not a program error ....

8:44 that proves the completely opposite in my opinion. if we cannot simulate a world identical to ours it means that whoever is running the simulation we are living in, dwells in a reality with a lot more going on.
If you think too detailed about it, Well, on a game(I heard that they tried this in minecraft) , you can not build/simulate a computer that has higher specs than your own pc that runs the game you are playing to make that computer, similar to how we can not run our entire universe from any computer thats created with stuff we have in our universe..
