@@kinghades3356As a highschool student who works retail after class, I can confirm that many retail service systems LITERALLY do not allow employees to process a return if it does not meet certain criteria, like being within our return policy date limit. Some items also cannot be returned without a reciept at all (this typically applies to products for which we have recurring issues with scamming). Doing our job properly means upholding the rules and regulations that we are taught from day one, not bending our policies and risking termination of employment for customers not competent enough to keep track of their original packaging and proof of purchase. Just to clarify the importance of those things: - Original store packaging is what we use to look up the product itself; if we can't find your item in our store, we can't give you any money. - Proof of purchase is required not just to determine that you actually purchased it from us, but also to give us a destination for the refund to be sent to. Me and my coworkers do NOT get paid enough to tolerate customers who feel entitled for a refund they make themselves ineligible for. Indecency like what you show now towards the person behind the machine both lessens your chance of proper service and worsens the experience for everyone else there. Please just do your part and follow your store policies. It's not that hard. 😊
@@The_K1tten_Earterat the store I worked at we would not allow employees to access the records. We can't even look up your name or account. This is at Kroger though idk about other places. And due to fraud and theft we won't return any higher price items without a receipt since no POP ( sorry for paragraph)
Thats not how returns work, i cant just look up your purchase like that. In most cases you're going to end up with store credit at the most recent sale price. Your credit care statement isnt a proof of purchase for specific items, just a total amount spent at a particular place
I agree with regards to credit card statements as that has absolutely no information that can be used by a store to process a return. Though, I actually can use a credit card to make a return. The real problems are people who won't honor the return policy that comes on every receipt. Either people who come in more than a month later or people who want to make a return without a receipt and without a credit card. Our policy is we can only give a store credit refund equivalent to the lowest price the item has been sold for in the last 30 days in that case. It's not something I necessarily agree with, but it's also not something I can physically change because the computer automatically determines the price. There's nothing I *can* do to change how much I could give to the customer besides stealing from the register, which would get me fired.
You can’t, but your store manager can. The statement has the date it was purchased, you can look up dates that it was sold. My manager occasionally did that over two decades ago, so it would be even easier now and include even more information.
@@LuckyCharms777 i am the store manager, we don't have a pos system that keeps track of transactions like that. Our "system" is a bit outdated, but the store is profitable.
@@LuckyCharms777 The transaction record on the bank statement/history doesn't always indicate the actual order date (usually a few days after the order made) and also usually doesn't state the items purchased on that order. May be difficult in this case for the store worker / store manager to look up the order on the store system and do the return if no receipt is provided during the return as the store may have a huge number of past orders to look up just to find that order to do the return
@@yuxian123 I’m not saying look at the bank statement, I’m talking about the sales transactions in the stores point-of-sale system. It has a record of every item sold.

@@supportwildlifeI asked GameStop about their return policy recently and they explained why they had to change things. People were buying and returning everything as a free rental service. Unopened new software and hardware are returnable within 15 days of purchase. New products that have been opened are not eligible for return or exchange. Seven days for a used item, to exchange or return. You may also be charged a restock fee. All because people tried gaining the system.
I am a loyal follower of this channel, but I am Canadian, and i SOOO wish there was a Canadian version of Mike so that I could apply these laws in MY life.
Yeah this is a very misleading video. Stores are allowed to have their own return policies that require a proof of purchase. Granted, the credit card return method mentioned would be a form of proof of purchase, but it's not guaranteed that every store everywhere has that ability.
Dollar General doesn’t need the original packaging but we do need proof of purchase, if you don’t have your receipt you can’t return it (at least in my location) we have no way to look in our system either. Always take your receipts folks
I'm confused. Warranty doesn't mean the manufacturer will refund for return. They will repair or replace a faulty item. Considering the 30-day return is a policy, they can indeed require proof of purchase and original packaging if that is also their policy. I'm not sure if it's within the mandatory return window, whether they need receipt or original packaging. If a merchant refuses return or has disolved, you can claim your money back through the credit card company.
As someone who worked in customer service, the customer doesn’t know nothing about doing returns because they stole the item and the store knows about it, and it usually ends with the worker being called a racist.
In Germany there is something called Gewährleistung which is a mandatory 2 year warranty covering that the item works properly. So if, by no fault of your own, the item doesnt work anymore in the first 2 years after purchase, youre guaranteed to get an replacement or your money back. The store you purchased it with has to take it back - no need to contact the manufacturer.
Straight up though, after working customer service, I'd be pretty pissed off if someone brought an unpackaged used item 31 days after buying it and without a receipt. And then took my clothes. 😆
If you don't have a receipt, an alternative option is to convince the store to look in the system for the item being returned. So he didn't help scammers "return" items. Also, you can drive to the manufacturer if you do not want to pay the shipping cost.
Yep, this is also why we recommend our own store's extended warranty. Relatively lower cost to the customer. No cost to ship, just all their money back for a new item.
bro just got cooked, LMFAO. you can directly drive to the manufacturer. or simply ship it by creating your own label and email them directly. at no extra cost. it’s easy
1. actualy most stores states that, in order to an item to be eligible for return, it must be in resellable condition and it must have all original packeages, accessories and papers. The only exception is if the item is DOA. 2. Store clerksdo not have access to accounting records neither do they have the authority to look for creditcard numbers in the system. Also bank statement is not a substitute for proof of purchase and store do not have to accept it. 3. returning to manufacturer is not something anyone in the store would care that includes store manager and everyone at corporate side of the company.
My store has a "deny for any reason" policy. If we simply don't trust we're told to deny even if they have a receipt or not. Scammers will steal product and return for cash all the time
I know a guy that would buy stuff and then return to the store, pick up the same item, and then walk over to customer service and get a "refund" with his old receipt and the second item.
You forgot to mention that not only regular household items, especially led light bulbs have a multiple year warranty, but also you are required to pay for shipping it, sometimes this requires it to be done international as well, adding way up to the point that it's cheaper to just buy another one.
Alternative title: How to be obnoxious, make the poor soul behind the counter do extra work, humiliate them, and look stupid by looking straight into the camera
i love it when people buy the "extended warranty" from the store. its like 3 years typically, funny part is most of the items have a 5year manufacturer warranty. so youre basically paying a large sum to bring it back to the store in the event it does have an issue.
Actually those warranties usually are out of store coverage. Walmarts warranties are from allstate for example you dont even go through the actual store to use them.
Mike, you are the best and I'm just a little kid but I will watch the videos in the future so I could understand life more so thank you for your videos
You can’t do that if the store has policies. Your best chance of returning without a receipt or original packaging is to speak with the manager not a regular check stand employee. In some stores, if you are not a rewards member, you won’t even be able to return anything at all unless they had your number before hand such as harbor freight.
Most companies have updated their policies to avoid this. They learned from Bed, Bath and Beyond, and Macy's. Some companies like Home Depot and Lowe's will do what Lawyer Mike says, however. They will look up your info if you paid by credit card. They will ask for some form of state ID to track if you are a serial returner and set a cap on the amount per year.
You might want to look at the manufacturer policy. Especially those who don’t sell directly to the customer don’t not generally do returns, refund, or exchanges as they didn’t actually sell you the product
Telling any major bussiness that is acting umjustly that youre calling corporate gives them chills. I called L.A Fitness corporate and they promptly refunded me and cancelled my membership as i requested. I got very busy with a relative who was experiencing long Covid symptoms and so i didn't have time between 2 jobs. I explained that and they promptly refunded a month when my local gym would not and required me come in person. For that reason, when i have time, ill restart my membership
Most places can’t look up purchases by cc numbers. Using Apple Pay creates a new number every time. Almost every place I know of requires original packaging and is stated in their return policies. Also returns and thefts come from stores profit and loss margins and literally takes money away from employees paychecks. So try not to do them if it’s not necessary.
You know, the last tip is a definite to try, I got a product through a shop that was shortly defunct afterwards, tried with the manufacturer direct as the item was failing within a year, a fair bit of back and forth but I got a replacement directly from them
And there goes the threat to blackmail them, if you do not get what you want, by threatening them with "Corporate" which often does not back up its owns policies.
In Canada, I believe only Costco Wholesale adheres to it's return policy, however other stores like Blue Sky, Walmart, Amazon, Value Village, Food Basic, etc., they do Not adhere to their return policy.

Guys, the people at customer service don't want (and don't get paid enough) to deal with this, even if it is true. Bring your receipts, and try to return before the end of the policy
Boo hoo i dont get paid enough to do my job properly 🎻
Don't get paid enough to look through a payment list?
@@kinghades3356As a highschool student who works retail after class, I can confirm that many retail service systems LITERALLY do not allow employees to process a return if it does not meet certain criteria, like being within our return policy date limit. Some items also cannot be returned without a reciept at all (this typically applies to products for which we have recurring issues with scamming). Doing our job properly means upholding the rules and regulations that we are taught from day one, not bending our policies and risking termination of employment for customers not competent enough to keep track of their original packaging and proof of purchase.
Just to clarify the importance of those things:
- Original store packaging is what we use to look up the product itself; if we can't find your item in our store, we can't give you any money.
Retail workers when they have to do the job they're being paid for: 😢 😢 😡
I love how some of mikes videos are genuinely educating people on law things and some are just how to be a karen 101
Mike out here teachin ppl how to become Karen's 😂
@@yuxian123
I’m not saying look at the bank statement, I’m talking about the sales transactions in the stores point-of-sale system. It has a record of every item sold.
Some stores don’t have databases the employees can access btw. Store I used to work at wouldn’t allow us to do returns without receipts because we had no way to prove they bought it
This doesnt work everywhere. I worked at TJ and we couldn't look up cards in "the system."
Gotta love the subtle work that goes onto extra effects
Mike slowly turning into a karen got me dying😭😂
Just because the store has records, doesnt mean the employee you are talking to, (or even the store manager, if it is controlled at a corporate office) has access to them.
I know on Walmart's last page of the return policy it says it has the right to refuse returns with or without a receipt. If they suspect you of receipt shopping, it's not gonna happen.
Never had that problem at Walmart but I wouldn't try to return at gamestop though cause gamestop return policy sucks
Edit: also people complain about Walmart customer service being too generous as in meaning basically you could abuse it, that's why this is even on the policy
@@supportwildlifePurchased faulty printer ink from walmart and they refused my return since the packaging was open😭

Unopened new software and hardware are returnable within 15 days of purchase. New products that have been opened are not eligible for return or exchange. Seven days for a used item, to exchange or return. You may also be charged a restock fee.
All because people tried gaining the system.
Parents bought a Christmas present on the 23rd, I tried to return it on the 26th since I got it twice....they wouldn't take it without the receipt xD

I am a loyal follower of this channel, but I am Canadian, and i SOOO wish there was a Canadian version of Mike so that I could apply these laws in MY life.
"We have a one-month return policy, yes, but that month was February, 1971."
At my store, we can refuse a return without it's original packaging.
In my country the law REQUIRES all electronics and such to have a minimum of 2 year warranty and you HAVE to accept returns even without packaging.
"At this point, we can only offer Store Credit".
Real
I'm confused. Warranty doesn't mean the manufacturer will refund for return. They will repair or replace a faulty item.
Considering the 30-day return is a policy, they can indeed require proof of purchase and original packaging if that is also their policy.
I'm not sure if it's within the mandatory return window, whether they need receipt or original packaging.
If a merchant refuses return or has disolved, you can claim your money back through the credit card company.
Bro slowly became the manager 💀
As someone who worked in customer service, the customer doesn’t know nothing about doing returns because they stole the item and the store knows about it, and it usually ends with the worker being called a racist.
Slow exchange of attires got me 😂
In Germany there is something called Gewährleistung which is a mandatory 2 year warranty covering that the item works properly. So if, by no fault of your own, the item doesnt work anymore in the first 2 years after purchase, youre guaranteed to get an replacement or your money back. The store you purchased it with has to take it back - no need to contact the manufacturer.
How to make a customer service employee's life harder because you were too lazy to return an item on time:
Straight up though, after working customer service, I'd be pretty pissed off if someone brought an unpackaged used item 31 days after buying it and without a receipt. And then took my clothes. 😆
In this case you probably helped the scammers even more. Also sending to the manufacturer usually involves a shipping cost.
@@codefreak8 Did you know several credit cards will extend the manufacturers warranty up to 2Xs?
bro just got cooked, LMFAO. you can directly drive to the manufacturer. or simply ship it by creating your own label and email them directly. at no extra cost. it’s easy
bro is pulling out the reverse card silently💀
Companies won’t actually go out of their way to return items when talking directly to the manufacturer. They simply don’t care enough to respond.
1. actualy most stores states that, in order to an item to be eligible for return, it must be in resellable condition and it must have all original packeages, accessories and papers.
Bro is the disproving 1 Karen at a time😂

bro switched jobs💀

It's true, you can always contact the manufacturer for the 1-2 year warranty, if the store return window has passed.
You can’t do that if the store has policies. Your best chance of returning without a receipt or original packaging is to speak with the manager not a regular check stand employee. In some stores, if you are not a rewards member, you won’t even be able to return anything at all unless they had your number before hand such as harbor freight.
Bro turned into the karen, to defeat the karen
What about a refurbished tv that broke 2 weeks after the store warranty period? I sure as heck wouldn’t be able to give it back to the manufacturer.
