Hi Everyone! I'm Larry Houston, the Director that created/storyboarded this GI JOE Movie Intro and the first :15 minutes of the movie with Pythona and the TerrorDrome. Also I storyboarded/directed the Sgt Slaughter vs the TerrorDrome sequence too. I'm so glad to read that so many of you enjoyed my efforts to create good, entertaining shows. Other shows I was also the Producer/Director on was the X-Men, Capt Planet, the Fantastic Four, RoboCop Alpha Commando, and Jonny Quest. I worked on most of the 80s and 90s animated shows. It was fun.😊
Thank you for your work! Without your efforts and talents, the morals and wonderful lessons with these iconic stories would never have the same impact and meaning! What do you do lately?
Holds up far better than the actual movie did. Hell I would have rather watched the lead up to this and have this be the finale' of the movie instead of that Cobra-La crap.
Pulse Nightclub shooting was actually carried out by the son of a CIA-hired PMC. and they STILL blamed "ISIS." mean, seriously, that's either a REALLY pathetic cover up, or the CIA actually didn't even realize black ops personnel had gone rogue... I don't know which is worse.
It takes me back to a simpler, happier time of my life (3-10 years old) back when my Dad, my Grandpa, my Gramma, my Sister, and My Grandpa Doc were all still alive. And I just had to be a good person, to do my work,to tell the truth and work hard in school and I’d get my Joes and my Dad and Uncle would take me to see WWF at the coliseum. If I could go back with what I know now and just enjoy those days with Mom, Dad my Sister my Granpop, and my little brother and neighborhood friends I would.
And Cobra learned a great message this day: don't mess with the Statue of Liberty....on the 4th of July.....and with G.I. Joe just waiting for you inside of the statue.
I think they would have brought him on. I mean, man so damn badass he flies using his own rockets, no jet pack required. In fact, I could see all the Mercs be brought on.
GreenGearMood That's clear, because the good guys are in 99% of all cases boring, who wants to be Luke Skywalker if you could be Darth Vader? And by the way, the villains in the 80s series cartoon could be a perfect example for "Never give up!" Constantly beaten by the good guys, but they will try it again, and again, and again ;)!
Dude, Chris Latta(who also did Starscream) had the coolest voice and made those characters such fan favorites. He made them seem even more bipolar, treacherous, cunning, and crazy than they'd already been depicted!
Part of it was a response to the fact that Cobra Commander's actor had problems staying at a jail. So they had to find a way to rely on him less in the story.
Serpentor was a great idea. He was put in the wrong mythos. He should have been in the regular Marvel Comics. Can you imagine him as part of a group like Hydra, fighting Captain America.
Watched my vhs a million times. Got it for my 6th birthday in 1989. Now turning 41, got the dvd and my 12 year old daughter and 9 year old son love it. They were even crying when Cobra Commander got the spores. They love him, all hail Chris Latta❤.
Anytime I hear the movie theme or the regular themes from TV I start crying because one, it's one of my childhood favorite cartoons, two, I wanted to be in the army and possibly do cool stuff like this, and three, It is a damn good theme!
Larry this is an indelible epic memory from my childhood. This 3 minute clip embodies everything I absolutely love about the Joe's and 80s animation in general. Can't thank you enough for this awesome microcosm of GI Joe awesomeness!!! Yo Joe!!!!
OMG at 1:33 Cobra Commander places a dynamite charge in a totally useless location (lays it against a solid wall, not under a foundation, scaffolding, or vulnerable structure). And the Statue of Liberty is shown as like 4 times normal size! I got to say that Cobra has a pretty cool intro tune!
Big part of our youth for the 80s kids (us 90s kids liked it too.) It annoyed the heck out of my traditionalist older relatives and hey, now that I have nieces and nephews, I often feel the same about their entertainment.
Gotta tell y'all, this was my all time favorite intro music/video. As an adult when this plays, I get chills all over. This is such an iconic and patriotic set. We had the best shows growing up in just Transformers and G.I JOE. Add M.A.S.K and others to the list, and nothing compared.
@ 1:08 of the intro that COBRA trooper was K.I.A. His parachute didn't deploy after his Trubble Bubble was hit. @ 1:36 G.H. got a kill. @ 1:46 The pilot of that Trubble Bubble was K.I.A. when S.E. flipped him out of it. COBRA Command got a kill when the Sky Hawk is shot down in the background of S.E. commandeering the COBRA Flight Pod @ 2:04 The Hydrofoil and Firebat pilots were K.I.A.. @ 2:17 the Hydrofoil pilots were K.I.A. And when the flying fortress blows up all aboard were K.I.A.
Supposedly - and this was never confirmed - the "casings" ejected by some Laser weapons were basically spent pyrotechnic flashbulbs or fully discharged micro batteries. The Soviets came VERY close to making something like a "G.I. Joe Laser Pistol" for their Space Program at one point, but it remained a prototype. Look it up on Wikipedia. Plus, it's fiction, give 'em a break. After all, Joe Lasers varied from pistols firing bazooka blasts to narrow band cutting lasers.
Where were you when you 1st saw this? It was Memorial Day of 1987, watching TV in the kitchen, my folks talking and the announcer said G.I. Joe was on next, so I expected the usual episodic stuff. But, this came on and it blew me away, and my folks...were silent the entire time!
The intro is THE BEST thing of this movie... Memorable and good... Unlike Serpentor's Battle Cry, the Whole Crappy-La aspect and Duke's Not really dead death scene...
They were going to kill Duke off but because of the backlash to Optimus Prime dying put a stop to it. They also was going to have Zarana top less when she was at the pond when Zartan approached her
this intro goes so freaking hard. it’s badass- and really, it’s genius. this isn’t just any US military propaganda, it’s _damn good_ US military propaganda.
I thought this intro was so 🔥!! My favorite part was the Cobra part. When I was a kid & when my friends & I played GI Joe, I always choose to be on Cobra side. Just to shout out COBRA!!!
I still hope we'll someday get a decent G.I. Joe live action movie. They started to fix the live action Transformers with Bumblebee, there's no reason they couldn't make a good Joe movie.
The best way to handle it is for the names of the characters (well, the names we know them by), to be more akin to code names or titles. Also, don't use the tag lines as spoken lines (Knowing is Half the Battle for example). And treat the Joes as an *actual* military unit with clear indications of a chain of command. As for Cobra, the best option is to actually make them a real threat, and doing something that's actually believable, or at the very least, plausible. As nice as their toys were in the second live action film... the Rods from God type weapon is a bit too much over the top for them. If it were up to me, the best thing is to take some cues from both real world terrorist organizations (as in how they operate), and from the 1995 Brotherhood of Nod. Though fictional, Nod does have some nifty toys at their disposal, and for an organization as well backed as Cobra, they shouldn't be out of reach for them either. Then there's the toys the Joes use. I would say keep them fairly grounded. Use equipment that the US Military uses, with a few higher tech prototypes sprinkled in. If they start with those things, and hire a decent set of writers and actors to play the characters, I think they'll have a winning combo.
I have this on my phone. It's funny seeing the look of people's faces when it's blasting on my car stereo at a traffic light. Funnier when the other drivers smile and join in on the song.
Glad to see this movie is finally starting to get the respect it deserves. Also, I'm just now realizing that the entire intro pretty-much begins with some random Cobra troop essentially teabagging the audience.
Still cool even now. I grew up in the UK with 'Action Force' and we didn't have this version of the song in our version of the movie - so when I first saw the American version and heard this I was blown away (er, so to speak...).
Step 1: park your Helicarrier over the Statue of Liberty. Step 2: have your troops parachute down and surround the Statue of Liberty. Step 3: blow up the Statue of LIberty. .... This really wasn't a very good plan. A smarter breed of terrorist would have planted explosives secretly and then set them off while the Joes were standing on top of it. Or hell, just flown a plane into it. Box cutters are lots cheaper than Cobra robot troops. I admit this is catchy as all hell, but I can't help but chuckle at how the main good guy, Conrad "Duke" Hauser, could have been on a Wehrmacht recruitment poster. Again, "Conrad Hauser". Was "Siegfried Krieger" already taken?
But first Larry Silverstein must insure Statue of Liberty. Then make general renovation and after that some terrorists with box cutters are blowing statue''s head with small cessna and the the whole construction turns into the dust because of... fire :D
And it’s unapologetically American. None of this global crap to kiss China’s ass. It is arguably the best opening to any animated movie ever. What an entrance.
Alpines jumping plane to plane, no chutes or nets, the fucking balls! Also, if you are coming on a GI Joe video trying to compare to real soldiers, go somewhere else. I appreciate the troops, but this is a fucking cartoon, get over it.
Knowing what I know now about Cobra's origins this takes a whole new meaning. you can see cobra Commander physcially cringing in fear taking the bomb from Destro, but he does it anyway. There's zero strategic value to blowing Lady Liberty up, but Cobra follows their leader to do it anyway. Did you know cobra commander is actually just a used car salesman whose daughter died because they had no health insurance? He fell ass-first into leadership of mercenary groups. One could really say Cobra is fighting for what the Us SHOULD be, and GI Joe are just good intentioned patriots fighting for their capitalist overlords.
Okay the math on this does not add up. When Cobra commander got the bomb It had 5 minutes on it and it took him 2 minutes to get to the Statue of Liberty. Therefore it would have been impossible for Duke to get the bomb to the same ship that Cobra commander left in 8 seconds and half time to leave . Therefore I am calling shenanigans on that part of the cartoon intro
That jet pack Duke uses is super fast. It took Cobra Commander 2:02 to launch from the carrier and place the bomb but Duke flew grabbed it @ 0:07 snd placed it on the carrier @ 0:04
The kid in me loved the movie and the opening... the 44 year old adult in me still loves it, but now wonder what happened to all the civilians dodging debris left from Duke shooting down major blood and the ensuing battle lol
Of all the members of the G.I. JOE team the one that still makes me laugh after all these years is Bazooka as that guy is probably treated like the comedy relief of the team I mean the guy is a complete klutz he trips over his own feet while carrying a bazooka and nearly takes Shipwreck's head off I mean how the heck did someone like him get on the G.I. JOE team he's a walking disaster area he's almost more of a threat to his own teammates than he is to COBRA.

thank you for this
¿The X-men intro?
My respects sir 👌
@@sidious187 I am a consultant on the NEW X-MEN'97 for Disney/Marvel right now.
goddamn this opening is still solid decades later.
Holds up far better than the actual movie did. Hell I would have rather watched the lead up to this and have this be the finale' of the movie instead of that Cobra-La crap.
Rodshark75 that movie was good
jia oliveira you can say that right! G.I. Joe is the best! what do we say?
lol especially 1/6/21 attack on the capitol when the mob 0:55 attacked the news to those lyrics panic spreading far and wide.
@@Rodshark75 The movie was OK but I have to agree. This intro was so good you didn’t even need the movie!
back when fighting terrorism was fun
now we just arm them or release them from guantanamo bay.
+Mike Hawk Thats been the practice for centuries, and Modern USA has been creating its own over seas and at home foes for decades.
Us has been creating and has been carrying out false flag operations to blame "terrorists"

Then everything changed when the Taliban attacked.
I cry tears of joy listening to any and all of the G. I. JOE themes. Best memories of my childhood.

One of the coolest openings to anything...ever.

From a US Navy Veteran who served in Afghanistan.... YOOOOO JOE!!!!! HAPPY 4th of July!!!!!
My favorite part to this day is still Bazooka tripping over his own feet and nearly blowing Shipwreck's head off.

I am so glad Sgt Slaughter signed his WHOLE bit starting with "Two ways out of my command" on my copy of this.
I'm 44. This song STILL gets me so goddamned pumped, I just used it during my shoulders workout.

Statue Of Liberty to be exact I was actually there
If soldier was there, he'd rocket jump up there like it was nothing. RIP Rick May.
This is what your Dad means when he says cartoons were better when he was a kid
This intro still brings me to tears
One of the hardest intros ever

Dude, Chris Latta(who also did Starscream) had the coolest voice and made those characters such fan favorites. He made them seem even more bipolar, treacherous, cunning, and crazy than they'd already been depicted!
The fact that they specifically left Serpentor out of the intro is a telling sign that they know fans didn't fucking like the character.

Who in cartoon history has eaten the most knuckle sandwiches? Cobra Commander is a contender for that definitely
back then,i always thought jetpack is awesome as this G.I joe cartoon... :)
Gotta respect Cobra Commander. Man had the balls to handle the explosive himself.
All balls and no brains. Maybe that is why he let himself get push around by Serpentor.
This is how movies should start.
Duke putting Cobras own bomb back on their airship is the GOAT!
