- An earthquake swarm began in the Campi Flegrei region of southern Italy at 04:33 UTC (05:33 local time (LT) on Friday, December 6, 2024, and ended at 17:14 UTC. A new earthquake swarm, lasting about 11 hours, began in the Campi Flegrei region of Italy at 04:33 UTC today. Campi Flegrei is a 13 km (8 mi) wide caldera that covers part of Naples and extends south beneath the Gulf of Pozzuoli.
The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported a preliminary count of 26 earthquakes, most of them of magnitude M1 and the strongest recorded at M3.4. Light shaking from the M3.4 quake was reported by at least 72 people. Although such events are common in seismically active areas such as Campi Flegrei, their shallow nature could lead to an increase in the intensity felt, even at lower magnitudes.
Campi Phlegrei is very dangerous 😔
