I'm currently 23 years old. I must have been 20 or 21 when I first discovered this. I briefly lost track of this song and video and spent more than a few days in that period wondering if I would find myself here again. Well, here I am.
This is one of those pieces that makes you think about life, the meaning of it, and everything else. I must have had my first existential crisis around the time I first discovered this song.
Things have started to metaphorically hit me in the last few years. I have realised that our time here is indeed very short, something I did not understand when I was a teenager. Everything in life is a fleeting moment. People enter and exit our lives like chess pieces. At first I struggled to come to terms with it, but now I realise that it is normal.
While I am here, I shall try to embrace every positive moment life gives me, and as far as the negative moments arise, understand that they too shall pass. I sometimes wonder what will become of me once I pass. Sometimes I question if any of this is even real, because sometimes it seems like it's all a fantasy. But I understand that I will never find the answers to these questions while I am here. So take each day as it comes, don't think about what you cannot control, and just live.
Comments like these always give me a good feeling while reading them, great mentality to approach life!

That being said, I find this piece very difficult to stomach. It resonates so deeply, and I find it hard to square away as such.
I want to live and I know the only way to do that is to seize the day and pursue adversary. Hoping that continuing to do this will lead me to a peaceful meeting with death.
I wish you fulfillment too. And I hope that both of us can continue to enjoy the very virtue of existance for every moment we have it in our grasp.

I'm currently watching 5th June 2021 and it as the theme of the day 5th June 2011. Lots has changed and moved on but I'd say those ere slightly better times. Aside from the fact I had too little experience (I was 21 back then).

Old movie of streetcar traveling east on Market Street in San Francisco. This movie was made a few days before the great earthquake of April 18, 1906. Most of the buildings on either side of Market Street were destroyed, if not by the 7.8 quake then by the great fire that followed and took out most of the city east of Van Ness Avenue.
...so in all likelihood, a significant number of the people in this film would be dead 4 days later? Maybe it's morbid to think about, but always a chilling thought.

Last I saw this video was on January 1 2020, no idea the world would be so radically different in just 2 years.
Late 90s to early and mid 2000s had this sound of pure nostalgia that takes me right to the year whatever was composed it’s crazy. Hearing this I feel 2001 . I’m 6 years old and all I know is homeschooling, cartoons and video games man time flies ❤😢😊
All of people, those horses and even those cars are gone. They no longer exist but this video is our only peek into the past. Also note how the entire video is on a street and it’s constantly moving forward. Great way to describe time and life. Beautifully done!

This video is part of a 12 minute video shot on a streetcar going down Market Street towards the Ferry Building about one week before the San Francisco Earthquake of April 19,1906. All the buildings you see, except for the tallest, The Call building, far down the street on the right side , were destroyed in the Great Quake and Fire. If you look carefully you will see the Ferry Building at the end of Market Street. It stands tall today as it did then. Best wishes to all from San Francisco

It's 12:05 am 1-1-2023, I graduated this year with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering... I am currently 25 yro and I still have a 1 year mandatory military service to do. I feel like I have been scammed. 26 years of my life have been stolen by an education I didn't want and will probably never use. I wish I spent more days actually doing jobs, developing my skills and gaining real life work experience. That would've been much better for my career and I would've made some money too. Instead I have a useless degree and 25 years of my life gone.
All I ever wanted was to travel the world, meet people and make videos sharing what I learned. I am still determined to do that. Right after I finish my military service, I will take a plane going somewhere in Asia and make my dreams come true.
You will succeed my friend, if you love something deep enough things will eventually fall in place!

I love the way you follow a course when newer technology is surpassing you (horse and automotive.) While enjoying this video on a modern screen recorded with an antique recorder. Oh, boy. I found this gem at 17. Now I'm 27 and I can't wrap my head around the fact, that 10 years have passed. Ten friggin years! It's like it was yesterday. Simply unreal. Makes me realise how valuable time actually is, and how fast it goes past you. Day by day, you are getting closer and closer to death, and what have you accomplished so far? If it's nothing, what are you waiting for? Why do you care about what other people think about you?
You know, your time is running out. Like the sand in an hourglass, however you cant just turn it over and start again. That's it, you are dead. You wasted your life. Is that it? Kinda sucks, doesn't it? Well, change it somehow. Make it worth your while. Do something, help somebody. Be useful. Start the business you wanted to do. Tell the girl you like that you do.
Don't waste the most precious resource you have. Don't be like me. I'm 27 and with all my health problems, I got maybe 5-7 more years, until i'm in hard enough chronic pain, to be unable to do my hobbies and medium/hard physical work. Please, don't waste your time, especially if your are healthy and strong. Please. Don't die without a purpose, even if you are alone and lonely like me.

The only thing stat scares me is how people will live after us...the next generations. When the nature sources are almost depleted. So I would not worry about myself and I still believe that there is something after this life. Time is only enemy when we live here with fear. No fear after death.

Fear is the wrong response. Don't cling to your life in such a way that when it inevitably changes, you can't change with it. Everything is transient. No matter what, this too shall pass.
We should be happy anyway for the time in history we live, possibly will be one of the most important in humankind history, we are lucky... tecnology changed so much in the present that 20 years ago we would think its impossible we have the things we have, we watched black and white tv´s that look like a box turn into High Defenition ones thin like a paper... we watched the first computers working some decades ago and now it´s nothing near what we have, even the cellphones with wires turned into wireless ones and they can do a million functions and be so powerfull almost like laptops we have. Net was made and now we can talk with people living in the other side of the world in real time and we can shopping and do a million other things without even need to go outside. More than half things we studied are now wrong because new tecnology evolves so fast and show us so many new things we barely have time to think about what we learned before. Medicine changed so much we can survive to a million things we would think its impossible 100 years ago, we can clone and even manipulate the dna. In 2000 we celebrated a new year, decade, century and milenium...
The list of things we saw changing at a incredible speed in this century is so big that we would need more than a thousand pages to show how much evolution we had. What we made this century surpasses what we did in almost all humankind history so far. how many generations have the same luck as us??
Surely in future we will be nothing more than memories but memories of a time humankind started to give a giant step in our evolution as specie.
Stop speaking from your ego. People live their lives and it shouldn't matter if you're remembered. Enjoy the sensations you're able to perceive and find peace in existence.

Uuuugh, I got the creepiest feeling ever. Everyone in the comments is talking about how these people are dead, but when they were still alive, they didn't know that people from "the future" would be watching this and thinking about the past. They had their lives being watched for a whole three minutes, not knowing that there would be an earthquake and fire, but we knew because it happened in the past. Lmfao idk it's funny to think about.
Perhaps in 2120 people will be watching our lives through a lens just like we watched the people in 1920. Theoretically, imagine if this covid situation were to turn into an apocalypse and end civilization. Imagine people 100 years from now looking into a video of life as we know it now. It's highly improbable but even entertaining the idea is fascinating. We truly don't know what could happen. Like you said, the people living in the 1900s never could have imagined a world where millions of people would be looking at their lives 100 years later through a device called a laptop. I'm 22. Feel like I've achieved nothing in life. No girl. No career. Left school and just follow the same day to day routine, shit job and people I'm tired of constantly interacting with and trust me I've tried to do something new but life keeps throwing inconveniences at me and I'm tired of putting my best effort with no results. These last few years in particular have felt like they just flew by, especially 2020 with this worldwide pandemic.
I feel like a failure, I know being envious isn't something people usually admit to (or even just venting your frustrations on UA-cam) but for the first time in a long time I've felt extremely envious of some of the people I grew up with. To me, they seem like they're superior to me in every aspect of life. Many of them are finishing school, dating and some are even getting married - "conquering new territory" if you will and I'm just stuck in the mud spinning my wheel, wasting my youth. I know this comment section is full of comments like this and I'm not expecting to gain anything out of it but I guess finding some common ground with people helps ease things. Thanks for your time.
I'm in kind of a similar situation. 23. Been ages since I last went out with a girl. Have problems getting close to friends, or even having friends for that matter.
I don't know if I can really help you, but I'm willing to share my experiences, because I think I know the emotion that you're feeling.
I think the last time I really interacted with someone I would call a friend was when I was around 16 maybe. We were both done with school and just drifted apart. Since then he became pretty popular with the people around my age. While I always stayed at home watching YT vids and playing video games.
I didn't want to interact with other people, due to never being able to fit in, or perhaps even trying to hard to fit in ever since I got into school. But I still envied him for all the attention he got. Even if it was just for doing drugs and having a nice car with a big engine.
Not getting any interaction with other people led to me getting pretty depressed and fed up with myself.
Long story short I spent around 6 years of my life not doing jack shit. Technically.
While I didn't spend much time with others I started to subconsciously figure myself out. I reoriented my enitre view of what is iportant to me. Which, again got me even more depressed, because I realized that everything I valued before, was the value other people gave that thing and not what it valued to me.
I'm now at a point where I don't require the attention from others, but I can still enjoy it.
However I still do miss the warmth you can have from a relationship with someone else.
I don't know exactly what got me through this rough time and I still don't think I am completely done with it. But the advise I would give you is:
Find stuff that interests you and follow that.
This can be everything from a job you're willing to spend 40 hours a week on, to a TV show that gives you more than just getting you through the day. It can be a book that makes you think or leaves a lasting impression on you. Philosophy that gives you new perspective. Or a simple view out of your car window that for whatever reason brings a smile to your face.
Having structure in my day to day life helped a lot. I got that through my job. But I still sometimes feel like everything I do is either inherently worthless, or perhaps the wrong thing to do.
But the fact that you can voice your feelings the way you do is already a sign to me that you want to change. Which is the first step to actually improving yourself. Don't worry, you're not the only late bloomer out there.
This got kinda long and I'm not sure if you can even get anything out of it. But if you at least read it, then it wasn't inherently worthless to me...

"what I deemed valuable to me, wasn't worth much to others" I'm paraphrasing what you said, but that line hit me deep because for most of my teenage years I had hoop dreams, hoop dreams I spent thousands of hours on, the missed parties, the missed potential girlfriends, all the blood sweat and tears, all for nothing. Things didn't go according to plan and so when I decided to quit those dreams and pursue something more realistic, like a career in the military, I was denied entry due to health issues I couldn't control. I honestly felt as if my whole life would changed if I would be able to join the military so I put a lot of effort into it, I would contact my recruiter almost daily but yet again life just handed me another L and all that effort I put in had gone to waste. Again. I'm just tired at this point.

I had to learn humbleness the hard way. And I also had to realize that while I want to become the best version of myself, that version is probably still not as successful as others. At least not in all aspects.
For example. I think most guys had at some point the idea of starting to work out so you can impress the ladies with your body.
I started to work out around 18. And quickly noticed that everyone else got bigger a lot faster than me no matter what I tried. Which again frustrated me to no end.
But it also led to the realization that I have to work with the confines I was given and be proud of the success within those confines.
While you might not have been able to get what you wanted (getting In the military) you might want to be successful in what you in fact can do.
My job isn't really the most difficult. Considering I'm just a simple car mechanic. But once I realized I was kinda good at it. It automatically became something I wanted to do.
I think we often give ourself outlandish goals we want to reach. While the satisfaction of reaching said goals can also be found in much simpler things.
