- International lecture given by Professor Steven Chu, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics and former United States Secretary of Energy.
The multiple industrial and agricultural revolutions have transformed the world. However, an unintended consequence of this progress is that we are changing the climate of our planet. In addition to the climate risks, we will need to provide enough clean energy, water and food of a more prosperous world that may grow to 11 billion by 2100. The talk will discuss the significant technical challenges and potential solutions that could provide better paths to a more sustainable future. How we transition from where we are now to where we need to be within 50 years, is arguably the most pressing set of issues that science, innovation and public policy have to address.
Steven Chu is Professor of Physics, Molecular and Cellular Physiology, and Environmental Science and Engineering at Stanford University. He shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics for laser cooling and trapping of atoms. Other contributions include precision atom interferometry, optical tweezers of biomolecules, and the first biological studies using single molecule FRET. His current research is in molecular and cell physiology, medical imaging, nanoparticle synthesis for bioimaging, and battery research. He was US Secretary of Energy from 2009 to 2013. He has 35 honorary degrees, is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and seven foreign academies.
The Royal Society is a Fellowship of many of the world's most eminent scientists and is the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence.

This was a beautifully delivered talk by Chu, really admirable how eloquently he delivered an immense amount of insight in a small amount of time. Something refreshing about hearing tangible solutions to a complex issue with pragmatic optimism.
Fantastic talk. Glad it was recorded so I could watch it again after the livestream because so much ground was covered in such a short period. The Q&A session was incredible too, every question answered so eloquently but in such an accessible way. Energy and renewables can be such intimidating topics but speakers and educators like Professor Chu are the trailblazers that we need to make these topics accessible for all.
A great talk by Professor Steven Chu. More academics and researchers like him should get some valuable experience in public policy and communication.
A change in economic models must also be a part of the equation. Economics are not laws of nature, they are human constructs geared towards creating wealth, development and prosperity -- quite often in a very inequitable manner because of human nature. This has arguably contributed greatly to where we find ourselves. The planet has to be looked upon as the number one asset. We need to move away from unbridled personal and corporate wealth and impose much tighter restrictions on profiteering at the expense of the planet.
yes we know that. but how? that is the big question.
We need to think about the future today
Print the money and save the planet, we can always forgive debt or restructure economics. I will take debt over destroying civilization. Let's change the tone of this here. This is not a parlor game.

Worse as conniving exploitation, dishonesty, & corruption characterizing ClimateCon? Climate critical is appropriate toward the ethical issues & else that need exposed, confronted, & resolved.
