"The Royal Albert Hall is a wonderful and inspiring place to be, but acoustically it can very strange. Loud sounds bounce around that vast space like balls on a pin-ball machine. Yet for quiet music it can be magical. The sounds go straight from source to ear, so they have a lovely miniaturised clarity like the distant figures in a Van Eyck painting. That unexpected intimacy accounts for some of the intensity of Maria Joao Pires’s recital of Chopin Nocturnes. But it would have counted for nothing without her special poetry. She’s a tiny, almost bird-like figure, and she seemed even smaller in that huge space, which was packed with more people than I’ve ever seen for a late-night Prom. It must be daunting for a pianist, but Pires seemed perfectly at ease, as if she was playing for a few friends at home. That gives her performances an air of total sincerity. [...] Pires wants to get at the poetic heart of the music, and here she did that time after time. The word Nocturne implies something dreamy and indistinct, but Pires’ performances reminded us that the expressive range of Chopin’s pieces is much bigger than that. There was the total rapt stillness of the early Bb minor Nocturne, uncannily clear, like a moonlit landscape. There was the fascinating uncertainty of the G major Nocturne Op. 15, which she poised so perfectly on the cusp between hesitancy and impetuous ardour. The late Nocturne in E major suddenly becomes stormy at its mid-point, but Pires managed to project this while suggesting it was only a momentary flurry - maybe only a dream - while the night-time stillness was still continuing, somewhere beyond our hearing. MARIA JOÃO PIRES born in Lisbon on 23 July 1944 and played her first recital aged five. She studied composition and music theory at the Lisbon Conservatory, followed by further studies in Munich and Hanover, Germany. She made her London debut in 1986 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

The scalely/arpeggio bits never virtuosic. They're fast but with a delicate shape that fits with the surrounding melody. What an artist.

That´s why I bought the studio album. Listened to the fist track for fifteen seconds and was completely baffled. Then I went to No. 2, the reason why I was actually looking for a good recording of the nocturnes, and after ten seconds I told the saleswomen to put it back in the box. Since a few years I often listen to it at night or rainy days.

In my opinion, these are the finest interpretations of the Chopin Nocturnes by a living artist in existence - such sensitivity. She truly lets the music speak for itself, no hint of empty virtuosity.

Ayer vi, a esta Gran Pianista en Youtobe ....ya ha de tener 80 años . Y el tiempo no Perdona ...es algo muy Triste . Tocaba Hermoso , estos Nocturnos tienen gran grado de dificultad , y escuchándola , me di cuenta de que Si , fue una Gran Pianista .A la edad que tiene en la Actualidad , sus manos ya fueron víctima de l deterioro articular ...es triste , yo también Tocaba , y me dio Artritis Reumatoide , y duele más en el Alma , ya no poder tener el mismo Alcance, la misma Agilidad , sin embargo toco el Concierto # 9 de Mozart .Y cosechó muchos Aplausos . Que haríamos sin estos interpretes de los Grandes Clásicos ? El Arte , es el Consuelo , para el Alma y solo mediante el , podemos exteriorizar nuestros Lamentos y Alegrías que quedan encerradas en lo más profundo de nuestro ser . It's a pleasure to find this Prom recital here - which I first heard broadcast live. It was a special evening and Pires' poetic artistry came over the airwaves as if I was in the hall. The sound is always beautiful and the interpretations balanced and poised. There was magic in the air!

(Written in March 2021) In my 60-plus years of listening to, playing, and just enjoying classical music, I have come up with my own list of the supreme interpreters or performing artists of Chopin's music. Topping the list is the good old master, Arthur Rubinstein, and (for the generation who came soon after him), Maria Joao Pires. Rubinstein needs no additional words of praise from me, but Maria Joao Pires deserves to be made better known to more lovers of piano music, Chopin in particular. Briefly, if you' love Chopin's music, listen to MJP's rendering of Chopin, and you would not be far off. Try her complete Chopin Nocturnes (on the 2-CD set from DGG), for instance. Another short example (among numerous others) is MJP's interpretation of Chopin's "Polonaise-Fantaisie" (op. 61), which I even prefer to Rubinstein's. Most recently, I noticed the young pianist, Katie Liu, played the piece with similar lyrical, sensitive touches, and I was wondering if she had been influenced by (or just happen to like/concur with) MJP's interpretation.
By the way, I heard that MJP has retired from public performance. That would be our loss; however, I am profoundly grateful to her for bringing me/us closer to Chopin. Bless her.
