From Danish wiki about this track. The track starts with the bass fading in all by itself. The bass sound is distorted and driven in through a flanger effect. Then the drums start and there are some guitar solos. In the middle of the number, a break is made, after which a bass solo is continued. There is another guitar solo followed by a short bass solo. Cliff Burton said in an interview about the bass solo "People are probably not even going to notice it but it's there". Orion was played at Cliff Burton's funeral after his death in 1986.
80s Metallica was more heavy metal than rock. This album "Master of Puppets" is arguably their best album. Their 80s stuff is the best run of metal from any band ever, IMO!
Cliff Burton the bass player R.I.P. wrote this… you should listen to his bass solo Anesthesia pulling teeth it’s hard but it’s a bass solo before it’s time
Aw shit! You finally got to the Godfathers of Thrash Metal! Please do the rest of this album. Its a slapper! The title track "Master of Puppets is considered one of the greatest metal songs of all time. Please do that next.
As an ancient Bay Area metalhead, proud to say Ive seen Metallica 6 six with Cliff and partied with him lots. My first Metallica show November 1983, I was 14
This was late bassist Cliff Burton's work, just before his tragic death in a tour bus accident in 1986... When he joined Metallica in 1983, he was the only schooled musician in the band... Cliff Burton was a huge fan of 70's rock, but also listened to classical music - he would play tapes for Metallica and share crucial tips on musical arrangements, melodies and harmonies... He was a huge part of Metallica's early musical development... As a bassist, he was unbridled - he would play w/ distortion so that it sounded like a rhythm guitar and he would play lead harmonies on bass. 'Orion' was 1 of 2 instrumentals he had recorded w/ Metallica ("Pulling teeth" was the 3rd, a bass solo that Burton would do at live concerts)... the 2nd was the similarly cinematic 'The call of Ktulu'... 'Orion' has this subtle, quiet part that sounded like someone adrift in space and had a sad, mournful melody ... It almost sounded like Cliff Burton had an inkling somehow that he was not going to be around much longer and this was his wordless "goodbye" ... His sister Connie Burton recalled that her brother would often turn on the TV in the morning (They both lived w/ their parents) and watch Billy Graham's Ministries ... and was unusually absorbed about sermons ... particularly about 'the kingdom of salvation' in the afterlife (Burton was not overtly religious and Connie felt it was an odd habit) He simply told her that he found it interesting... Metallica did an instrumental after Burton's death - 'To live is to die'... it contained a brief spoken word poem that Burton had written about 'the kingdom of salvation' inspired by Graham's Ministries. Years later, Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) of Metallica recalled the band on the tour bus in Europe in 1986, they argued about sleeping arrangements and they decided to draw cards that night... Cliff Burton drew the Ace of Spades, looked at Hammett and demanded his sleeping bunk... Hammett grumbled but gave it up to Burton and went to the front of the bus... Later that very night, Hammett recalled being woken by noises and violent shaking... then, the bus flipped and sent the band and crew off their bunks. With the bus finally stopped and was on its side, Hammett was the first to locate the emergency exit hatch and opened it to step out - he saw Cliff Burton's legs sticking out from under the bus... Apparently, the bus driver had overcorrected on the highway in Sweden while going too fast and the bus skidded before being flipped on the side of the highway... Burton was sleeping in Kirk Hammett's usual bunk and he was thrown out the window and the bus landed on him, killing him instantly... Any other day, it could have been Kirk Hammett who could have died. A crane turned up to lift the bus, but it was far too late... the bus driver blamed 'black ice' on the road for the accident... James Hetfield of Metallica said he walked along the highway looking for black ice but couldn't find any and was furious... He and Hammett were heard yelling at the bus driver for a while as the others trapped in the bus had to be rescued. The band & crew were treated for injuries and driven to a hotel where they drank heavily to cope w/ the trauma... The loss of Cliff Burton was a hard one - he was only 24 years of age ... Metallica was never able to go in the musical direction they could have if he had lived... Jason Newsted (bass) was hired in '86 so that Metallica could go back on tour, but he was subjected to a lot of 'hazing' by band & crew because they blamed him somehow for the loss of Burton.
One of my kids and his whole high school football team used to listen to this song before every game.... Just shut your eyes it helps you clear your mind.. plus it takes you through almost every part of human emotion, and gives you clarity in the end.
when I was in high school (late 80s) we listened to Metallica on weights day and on the bus to the game and in the locker room before the game. Usually songs from Kill Em All.
YAY... Metallica Journey! The whole album "Master of Puppets" is where it all started for them and every song on that album is amazing. They have many amazing songs but there's no comparing this album to anything else. This album is in my top 5 favorite albums of all time. I can put it on and clean the house... lol Hope you do more and start with Master of Puppets album. It changed my life in '86-87 and has been a staple in my playlists ever since.
This is a beloved song amongst Metallica fans and bass players. This was Cliff's song, a talent taken too soon. Whenever it's played, by whoever may be playing it, it's usually approached with respect and honor. It's a beautiful complex dance between the bass and guitars. RIP Cliff 🙏🏼
@2869may yep! I hear ya there. People forget and/or sleep on the Justice album. One of my all-time favorite records and the Justice tour in 1989 was amazing 👏🏼. Saw them twice on that tour, and the March 89 concert at the Spectrum (RIP) was one of the best concerts I ever witnessed. Good time to be young back then. You take care 🙂🤘
Right on guys, I'm gad you enjoyed it. I picked Orion to show what they were capable of before you heard some the neck snapping riffs their known for. There's tons of history associated with Metallica, some good, some bad, including Megadeth whom you've already heard.
You guys just opened a door to a whole new type of music... mettalica is like a musical band.. the more you listen to the songs the more you will understand why
Love this one, it's very classically composed. Like violin harmonies. FYI, check out the acoustic cover of Orion by the brilliant duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. It's masterful. From Mexico, they moved to Dublin and tried to get gigs at pubs, but the pubs didn't want metal bands. So they went acoustic and played metal songs.
Black Sabbath is my favorite metal band but Metallica is right after in a scrum with Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. For me, add Queensryche and you have a fabulous top 5.
Oh man the Godfather's of METAL!!! And talk about a phenomenal lead guitarist this guy is he, Kirk Hammet!! Guy's please check out they're most underrated album IMO, DEATH MAGNETIC
Been waiting for you guys to dive into Metallica! Just do like you did with Zeppelin and ride through the entire first 3 albums..they have some great songs on the later albums but everything with the bass player Cliff Burton 's influence and amazing bass playing is definitely their best work...R.I.P Cliff!🤟🤟🤟
You guys are my favorite reactors because you're musically knowledgeable and know what's going on and level of difficulty or lack thereof. Always enjoy the commentary of smart musicians. You know how to appreciate what's good.
My favorite of their songs and it's on an essentially perfect album. The mini sort of solo at 2:05 is Cliff's bass. He plays a full on solo from 8:13 to 8:33. My replacement CD of Mothership Connection (in a 5 CD set) arrived on Monday.
The energy and tension that builds in their songs is manifest in the tightness of their play. Those swift precise changes really bring it home. Although, I've heard Lars tends to speed up, the rest of the guys keep him in check so you never notice live.
Metallica has so many amazing songs you guys should check out. Fade to Black, The Unforgiven, Jump in The Fire, Leper Messiah, Call of Ktulu, and Trapped Under Ice are all great songs
Love them! Saw many times and you are spent after the show with the gyrations and the pit. Impressive to be so hard but able to understand every word. Thanks guys and this box u opened will not disappoint.
Largest concert in history Moscow 1991 1.6 million in attendance, look up Metallica enter sandman Moscow you’ve never or ever will see anything like that
RIP Cliff. Always beautiful, no matter how many times I hear it. Thanks, guys.
Cliff 'em All!!!
I was going to post "Cliff!" But, you beat me to it!
@@ChrisSmith-bz1gl I wore out 3 VHS tapes watching Cliff Em All during the late 80s and 90s
Disposable Heroes will always be my favorite track on this record.
it’s good but not even comparable to orion. orion is it’s own masterpiece.
Both are the standout tracks on the greatest album ever created, by anyone.
Love the instrumentals , The Call Of Ktulu is badass as well.
From Danish wiki about this track.

Not sure why it don`t exist on English wiki
Yeahhhh.....this whole album.
This whole album changed the game for me on '86, and I'm still listening to Orion 38 years later. What a legacy.

Their 80s stuff is the best run of metal from any band ever, IMO!
I used to think MOP was their best also, But now it's AJFA for me.
Best metal band ever...!
@@2869may it’s definitely in the discussion with Puppets and Lightning too
@@tbone2071 Right, I literally wore out a MOP cassette in the late 80's... LOL
(DIO's Holy Diver too)
Metal is rock. It's a sub genre
I'm a justice guy, but their early albums are untouchable
The dakka-dakka-chug of this song never ages for me.
Cliff Burton the bass player R.I.P. wrote this… you should listen to his bass solo Anesthesia pulling teeth it’s hard but it’s a bass solo before it’s time

My absolute favorite Metallica song with not one lyric I'm so excited you did this song
Orion never start's, never end's it's a just a metal timeless jam!!!
This entire album is fire. My brother, friends and I used to listen to it before school, at lunch and when we got home.

“The Four Horsemen” is my all time favorite Metallica song, followed by “Orion”. Such a great song.

Listening to the story again breaks my heart all these years later, but fantastically written
Thanks for the explanation of that tragic event.
Orion is my favorite but everything they did in the first four was amazing.
Agreed , the album is a masterpiece but Orion, is just phenomenal
I take it back both of them seem to be sincere and love how amazing the song is without any lyrics I love these guys
Mr. Dirty again comes through. This song was a revelation to me. Thanks guys, pure fire. 🔥🔥

Cliffs solo at 8:13 is beautiful
I just heard them play this live in St. Louis about a month ago and it was absolutely amazing. They are the best at what they do.
They went from thrash metal, to a sophisticated complex metal rock, then radio/mtv friendly metal, then rock band, with the black album.
