Martha Well's Three Worlds, from her Raksura series is absolutely stunning and vast! I never hear anyone talking about it, but out of all of her books, this one is the best in my opinion
Genshin Impact has some of the best worldbuilding I’ve experienced. For me, it’s up there with the greats, but the dialogue and other issues that come from it being a gacha game (particularly over-obfuscating the worldbuilding) make it hard for the average worldbuilding enjoyer to experience
Great video. Not really worldbuilding related but the music is also very coherent with the progression into the abyss. While watching the show I didn't pay attention but listening back to the 3 albums really makes you go through the layers again. It's insanely well crafted, absolute masterpiece by Kevin Penkin.
Akihito's art never fails to inspire a sense of awe in me. His story never fails to make me go "Why am I even looking at this why have I been given the curse of sight and comprehension"
The Curse of the Abyss also brings up a number of interesting ramifications and questions, and that's why I think it is so interesting. It's also clearly inspired by the Bends, which is why divers have to surface slowly, or suffer a probably agonizing death. Keep in mind that civilization of the Abyss appears to be late 19th to early 20th Century as far as technology goes. They have some electrical devices, such as flashlights. The lack of firearms is surprising, which hints that they are not advanced enough to use as an adequate defense against most of the Abyss's predators. It's likely that the rifles available are probably just going to piss off your average Orb Piercer, and you're probably not going to get enough shots off before you're dead yourself. But if you did move into the 20th and 21st centuries, you would have to lug around any equipment that you do have, and you'd probably not be able to rearm. Eventually, it might be better to abandon them, rather than carry the dead weight. Using helicopters to deliver supplies would not be an option, except for the lower levels, since the crew would suffer the Curse during ascent. Anti-nausea meds would be mandatory for the lower levels. But what about drones? Does the force field interfere with signals? What about GPS and navigation? What about manufacturing supplies such as ammunition on the lower levels? Basically building your own infrastructure down below, once you reach the appropriate technological sophistication. Speaking of which, later in the series, it does appear that they do have technology that you would expect to find at least in the 50's and 60's, with a tank-like transport or elevator. So I'd say that they probably do have firearms that could take down even an Orb Piercer, such as RPGs, but they clearly aren't considered effective enough for teams to carry them. And then we have exotic technology. Would a transporter from Star Trek work in the Abyss, or would the force field interfere with the transport-in-progress, turning the victims into malformed monstrosities like in the transporter malfunction in TMP? Would a shuttlecraft's force fields protect the crew from the Abyss's force field, or would attempting to ascend go over about as well as Tom Paris's Warp 10 jump in the Cochrane? Finally, the fact that the Abyss's force field appears to be designed to keep people from leaving makes me wonder if it's a trap, or more of a quarantine to lock away some horrible secret that the civilization that created the city at the bottom also created, and ended up destroying them? We'll probably not know the answer to most of these questions, but it does make for some good food for thought and speculation.
I'm leaning towards what you said there at the end. There could be some kind of mystery down there at the bottom that gives meaning to the whole journey. What it is, no one knows...
Regarding worlds with great worldbuilding, there's one videogame called Rain World that also does an excellent job. Now I'm not gonna lie, the game is tough as nails, but it's truly a unique experience. It's biggest selling point is that it tries to simulate the workings of an ecosystem, where each creature acts independently trying to find food and shelter. It always simulates entire regions on the background, and because of that, unique (and weird) interactions between the creatures can happen wether or not you're present in a specific area. I recommend you at least watch some youtube videos of the game, so you can see if it's right up your alley.
Great video! One feedback I have is that the use of the Discord message notification alert sound was distracting, several times I thought it was an actual discord notification and changed tabs. Please consider using a different sound for text pop ups :)
Cosmic horror is about feeling insignificant and powerless in an indifferent universe.. It has existential undertones. There are almost always "gods" that are symbolic representations of the incomprehensible in order to make the reader feel small compared to the universe. Made in abyss is about a robot boy with a giant laserbeam that can literally rewrite history There is nothing cosmic about that since the characters are not powerless/insignificant and are instead able to reshape or even "rewrite" the course of history ins Also the abyss is based on the buddhistic idea of hell, we don't know the full story yet but reincarnation might play a role (reg might have been rico's dog). If there is reincarnation, a Buddhist hell then this suggest that there is also a Buddhist purpose, but in cosmic horror the main punchline is that there is no purpose and that we are small and insignificant. Also the focus is very different: cosmic horror is focussed on creating fear out of the idea that mankind is insignificant in the face of a cold and indifferent universe while MIA focusses more on the contrast between the beautiful and the terrible. so I wonder.. did anyone who calls the show "cosmic horror" actually read lovecraft?
i didnt watch made in abyss for so long because of how kiddie it looked. then a friend of my said i should watch it because its extremely deep, disturbing, and also beautiful. they were 100% right. its an amazing franchise of content.
I wonder if it will ever be explained what the artifacts are. Did they come from expeditions in the ancient past, raiders who died or people who once lived in the abyss?
Made in Abyss is in my top 3 anime/mangas but if you read the manga, you'll come across a SPECIAL pdf file type of world building. Why? Idk, because the author is gross! lol
Thats exactly what I was thinking while watching the anime. I absolutely love the story, characters, and world building, but I can't get past the weird pervy/predatory depictions of children in the show. It's sort of ruins it for me unfortunately. (it's kind of like a "thimble of piss in the punch bowl" situation. An otherwise fantastic show ruined by a few minor scenes that could have easily been cut.)
This is the only anime I ever stopped watching because it made me feel uncomfortable. I love the world building, the author has talent, but keep your gross fetishes to the side line fr
Had to scroll down too far for this comment. I love the world, the characters, but wayyyy too much fetishization of minors is WEIIIRDDD. Made me wonder what the point for this whole thing was, especially during season 2 - a lot of it is just pointless pervy shit
@@AbyssalSoda I agree, painfully so. I mean, I believe myself to be mildly resistant to gore and tragedy, not really unnafected but still resistant. But this otherwise fenomenal work known as Made in Abyss managed to make me feel sick, disgusted, confused and pretty much ashamed of having even tolerated it so long, and made me permanently drop it inmediately after. A shame, since the setting is otherwise incredibly interesting and creative, and the drawing exquisite. Though again it feels wasted on the... 🤢 WEIRD, for not using other words, scenes.
If the characters were like 10 years older and the author's obsession with explicit scenes with naked people wasn't so obtuse, Made in Abyss would be perfect.
The whole stroy of Made in Abyss is titanic and beyond belief, worldbuilding foremost among them. But unfortunately it's the horrifying cruelty of much of the storyline that practically ruins it for me. I don't think I will ever watch the entirety of the saga because of that.
I ❤️ World Building … and Made in Abyss has it in spades. 😉 - by the way, Anime? Is this your adaptation of Roadside Picnic 🧺 with a massive time jump?
What is your favorite worldbuilding?
One Piece, hands down...
Made in Abyss is in my top 5.

Adventure Time has some really interesting world building after it settles in

Made in abyss is absolutely beautiful yet so terrifying
It is indeed, a good combination in fantasy!
The world is almost as unsettling as the authors pedophilia tendencies
You probably like children.

Yes, 100 percent! I was listening to the tracks while picking the music for this video. They work with the story perfectly!

I'm not that big of a gamer, but I do know about the ecosystem of Rain world! I do find it fascinating!
another Made In Abyss video to keep me entertained, love this show 🙏
Something that sells that people live in a place is how, even if it's fantastical, the locals treat it as just another day.
Ah, yes. Uncle Lovecraft's Happy Funtime Murder Hole.
Keep making videos like this bro good job , And one more recommendation can u also make videos on the authors of this types of anime .
Thanks mate! Appreciate the support! Yeah, I'm just getting into the world of Manga, so you can expect those breakdowns down the line!

Made in Abyss has a strange sence of calmness to the setting. At least for me.
There is a Minecraft community that made Mine In Abyss, a really big, immersive recreation of the Abyss
It's pretty cool. I just saw their website!
Incredibly cool! My first thought though: "Oh god, Minecraft and Made in Abyss overlap... think of the children"
@@ItsMuffinTimePls People who watch made in abyss think about children ALL THE TIME.
True cosmic horror even though it is down a pit.

Yeah, there's stuff yet to be explained. I read somewhere that it could be from an ancient civilization or something.

Ah yes, the anime that gets you put on the registry
Yeah it has some neat environments back when i checked it out but i'm not watching more of this shit. Why can't japan be normal

if this show had a more mature art style and the author didnt focus so much on his pedo stuff, this anime would be on my top 3 ever
