I was married to the same Asian woman for 47 years. While she was young and beautiful when we married, age did wilt the flower of her youth. But in my eyes she was always my rose! Now she has passed and I have our memories. This is one reason I like these dramas featuring older actors. The female lead is a fine actress in my opinion!

She didn’t think that there was anything wrong with that? Choosing to be a doormat is a thankless job. Plus, people will do to you what you allow them to do.

And as primitive as it may have looked, it would have been typical of documents issued in rural areas of China in the early 1990s. Regarding her appearance, she was clean, and her clothing represented her frugality, which she obviously considered a virtue. She just kept wearing what she'd always worn in the country. She rarely thought about herself or her appearance because she was so focused on providing for the happiness and well being of her family, a mindset that was likely taught to her as a child by the people who raised her. The other thing that struck me was that because they moved from the place where she had grown up, she was largely isolated from the social interaction that might otherwise have made her more aware of how her appearance was viewed by outsiders. Add to that a self-effacing personality that was reinforced by her husband's indifference to her and her concerns, and it's easy to understand how she could end up where she was at the beginning of the drama. She didn't so much choose to be a doormat as she drifted into it.
I wonder if this is the effect of China's one child policy. Every child is spoil rotten and becomes ungrateful children who think mother is just a slave and can be treated like nothing...

This has to do with social norms, though. Someone has made these children believe that mothers should be treated like this. It really goes against the grain for me, since I so strongly associate men caring for mothers with Chinese society as a whole. Dunno what the real cause of the rise of the man-baby is, though.

They kept saying she was from the countryside, which means she was probably taught to do those things in a marriage. Even in today's society, there are still women who cater to their families. Once you have a child, it is easy to neglect yourself, especially when you think the family is in debt. Now, the best thing that happened to her was that she woke up and left that horrible situation. She had the ultimate revenge when she succeeded.
Haven't seen a lot of bashing comments. This woman's situation is very realistic BECAUSE of the points you made, and I don't see why anyone would bash her for simply being a woman of her times. On the other hand, the nominal husband was a lousy piece of crap because he KNEW from the very beginning that he was scamming that poor woman and went on doing it for so many years. I got the impression she would have gone to her grave, destitute and ignorant if not for that serendipitous accident at the bank. I really wish the lying scumbag of a common-law husband could have gotten more direct punishment, though... he was just a horrible man who taught his descendants to be just as horrible.

The contrast between the legal wife, who has done little or nothing to support the man and his family, and the nominal wife, who has done everything except receive the man's legal recognition, is very visually telling at 16:00. The director did a good job there at illustrating that women who subsume themselves in their identities as caretakers, basically glorified nannies, of their husbands and families don't benefit much from their sacrifices, especially since men who expect them to behave like this are also the last to appreciate or even acknowledge those sacrifices. I'm not saying women shouldn't support, sacrifice and contribute to the family life. However, there should always be a reciprocity to the support, sacrifice, and contribution from the husband, and women should be able to maintain their appearance and fitness BECAUSE their husbands are providing that reciprocal care. In this story the husband split the wifely role between his wife, whom he pampered, and his concubine, who was only there for the hard parts. Thus both women serve as examples that women should examine and consider as they define their roles within their relationships with men, family, and the wider society.

What a case of more hair than wit ... smh 57:25 clear example of discrimination against older people here ... interestingly enough, it was the young people I encountered during the recent pandemic who struggled with the practical applications of computer tech; the old heads caught on quickly and moved forward like pros. This younger woman is a bad example of what young people in business should be like.
