Thank you for reacting to more T-ara!! They were definitely more on the cutting edge of having these drama MVs, and that's highly in part to their actress line Jiyeon (blonde hair), Hyomin (pink hair), and Eunjung (blue hair in Sexy Love), as they received training to be actors before joining the lineup of T-ara, and even while promoting in the group they also had many acting roles, causing them to be even busier, but hey, that's how it goes :) And after going on hiatus, Jiyeon and Eunjung continued to focus on acting, so it just goes to show :) Btw, both songs were released in 2012 (iirc around July for Day by Day, and September for Sexy Love) and boy was that a long wait for part 2, since the bullying controversy came too :/ Definitely, their Cry Cry + Lovey Dovey drama MVs were super high-scale, the Cry Cry MV's budget exceeded 1 billion won and included many A-list actors, and it even had posters and advertising to promote it like a movie! And here, they just continued building on it with a much more intense storyline and post-apocalyptic fantasy setting :D One thing I really like about this pair of drama MVs is that they also included some B-sides to help keep the tone for different spots, and so that you're not just listening to the same song over again. It really helps to make the album and MV feel like a whole cohesive experience. (In contrast, the Cry Cry MV plays only Cry Cry as well as its ballad version, although it doesn't feel too repetitive when you're busy watching the MV, and only if you pay closer attention to the music). In this case, "Don't Leave" plays in Day by Day, and "Day and Night" plays in Sexy Love. A great part of classic T-ara's sound is that they kind of had two distinct motifs, they had the more sentimental "crying in the club" sound from Cho Young-Soo's songs (including Lie, Cry Cry, and Day by Day) which also usually pulled more from a European/Latin/instrumental sound. But then they also had their uber-popular electronic dance hook songs written by Shinsadong Tiger (chief producer for EXID and TRI.BE) such as Bo Peep Bo Peep, Roly-Poly, Lovey-Dovey, Sexy Love, No. 9, and Sugar Free. The story goes that Hyomin is the sister/taking care of Dani, who is the blind girl with supernatural powers. (Dani was originally going to debut as a 9th member of the group, but those plans as well as transitioning the group into a competitive, rotational member system were dashed after the bullying controversy). Jiyeon is the leader of her gang, and wants Dani for her powers. She ends up tricking Dani into believing she's Hyomin by kind of copying her voice, which is why Dani starts to work for her. Hyomin got found by those guys who were able to heal her, and 6 years later she reawakens, hence why Dani now appears older and with short hair (played by Eunjung) and serves Jiyeon as like her assassin. Then, when Hyomin shows up, it throws Dani into a conflict with her memories. Eventually, Dani follows Jiyeon to a club, and we see Soyeon (the DJ) turning up the music to interfere with Dani (she's blind, so she relies on hearing). And that leads to our final battle - note that "unni" doesn't necessarily mean older sister by blood, but can also just be an older female The Day by Day MV also had a unique preview for Sexy Love, at the end of the MV they put behind-the-scenes footage from the Sexy Love MV! And then at the end of the Sexy Love MV, we got behind footage for Day by Day! And it shows a lot, like how the members had to learn swordfighting choreography for the MV. Jiyeon actually got hurt too :( In terms of the corporate decisions, T-ara was not the first group to debut under now-MBK, but they really hit popularity levels unheard of for their label (they were also responsible for Davichi, but their songs catered more toward adults rather than the Hallyu wave, a.k.a. global expansion of K-pop, that was up-and-coming at the time with idol groups). Hence, the CEO was heavily involved with decisions for T-ara, and so he must've seen this as a great marketing strategy. He himself was also a bit innovative and had a good nose for trends, as seen in a story where, once the Roly-Poly retro concept was decided, he eagerly went and danced some retro dance moves for the members to see lol And in a way, it worked, as this style of movie-like drama MV was unprecedented at the time and perhaps is still unmatched to this day :o (Although now that I think about it, Golden Child had some kind of webdrama thing with their Burn It promotions, though not quite fully promoted like a movie or TV show) 26:00 Yes, that's Eunjung and she's our short-hair queen! She rocks short hair in almost every era of T-ara from TTL (2009) until Sugar Free/Little Apple (2014) XD YES you should definitely watch the dance MVs for both songs, they deserve their time in the light too! (Especially Sexy Love has a very unique choreography) ;o
this is why i love old kpop and T-ARA are my Queens of kpop T-ARA absolute first album i got it wan it was new and i'm still a fan of T-ARA today i remember seeing for the first time the Day by Day video and sexy love and being like why is kpop so good?
I totally love T-ara's drama version MVs.❤ Even after more then ten years I still watch them from time to time. You should also check auto the drama versions of Cry Cry + Lovey Dovey. These don't have as much action, but a lot more drama. 😭
Oh I'm so glad to see a reaction to this! No one did story MVs like T-ara did. Day by Day is what caught my attention and made me a fan when it came out in 2012, I was OBSESSED with the MV, the acting, the swordfighting, the apocalyptic scenery, the outfits, the silliness of it, everything. (I was 13, so this was all very formative for me lol).
I see my fellow queens have put in who was who in the mv. One thing to note is that T-ARA really kicked off the storyline (at least of my memory, they certainly popularized it). And they were spending the most of anyone on the MVs, Cry Cry (a year before this) was the first kpop mv to surpass a 1B won budget. About the "was it worth it" thing.... it would have been. MVs are absolute money pits, especially kpop ones, across the board. Which is why a lot of western artists dont put in nearly as much effort anymore, but Kpop companies view it as a marketing tactic for their albums and all the other stuff, you know? With T-ARA, they were on top of the world at the point they filmed these MVs. Shortly after Day By Day's release was the.... "bullying controversy". They were well on their way to being ranked amongst SNSD, 2NE1, and KARA. I think I've talked about the controversy enough in these comments and discord so I won't raise my blood pressure again but... yeah. I think CCM and other companies saw it as worth it. You dont get a direct payout that matches the expense from like youtube adsense, but they were building a brand of putting all that effort into their work. Sometimes things are more nebulous as to whether its worth it. Just wish it could have continued :(
Just a point, they were definitely ranked amongst SNSD, 2NE1, and KARA. At their height, they were valued with top contracts in Japan, and then later China.
@@YongShengOng at that point for sure. Their legacy currently is what I was talking about, the scandal definitely kneecapped them in that regard. But yeah i mean in a year where KARA released Step, SNSD had The Boys, and 2NE1 had I Am The Best, T-ARA was the highest earning girl group of all of them with Roly Poly and Cry Cry. At their peak they were in the top tier. It was just cut shorter because of a lie.
The members in this MV are Hyomin (red hair), Dani (the blind girl character - who was a trainee and I think only 14 at the time? She was supposedly going to join the group in the future, but that just never happened), Eunjung (who plays older Dani in blue in the Sexy Love MV), Soyeon (the DJ in the red outfit in the club in Sexy Love), and Jiyeon (the blonde).
Eunjung was my bias!! Loved these MV they did. Didn’t really go with the song but since those three Jiyeon, hyomin and eunjung were known as actress and idols since during that time they were doing dramas. Miss those time before all the fake bullying scandal.
for me It felt like 2011 was a year when k-pop started to heighten their quality with their music videos...though big budget videos like these can only be afforded by the big 3 agencies or big popular groups...t-ara at the time was very popular, and their songs really worked for the asian market, their popularity in china was no joke... This song felt like final fantasy meets metal gear solid meets mad max...i was obsessing this comeback when it was released....the fact that u mentioned mad max, the same year BIG BANG did a song called Monster in 2012 with a very mad max concept, even mad max the movie wasnt out yet until 2015 hahaha... please do check more 2nd gen groups :D
That time Girls Generation & T-ara were my favorite girl group ❤ T-ara has many good songs e.g. Roly Poly, Lovey Dovey, Number 9, Time to Love, Weironi, sugar free, we were in love
I remember when I saw this just released. I love T-ARA, they are so creative, beautiful, talented, involved in the creative role with their production team and even the live performances were different because they added a different dance break or something, but they always served.
They need to release that Sexy Love version! Like oh my that sounded like it would have been way better. Although I love the original release and listen to it every day since it came out, I really want to hear how it would have sounded.
So happy you reacted to this ! , these are among my absolute favorite MV's of alltime , which they still did stuff like this nowadays including the music , T-ara is such a great group
