I don’t know how much piano repairs go for (although I know you’re exaggerating it and telling an extremely tired and unoriginal online joke), but if we’re being honest, I’d pay more for someone to do it right if I had the choice.
Please, bore me with the details. I am actually curious. As a musician and someone who is mechanically and technically inclined it is interesting the inner workings of a piano.
I know it’d be a lot of work but you should make another account where you explain these processes and tools in depth. I recently picked up a piano off of fb marketplace for free and I want to learn everything about it so that I can teach myself how to be a piano tech. I’ve seen every single one of your videos a few times over and love your channel but there are some issues that i have that nobody seems to cover in detail
@@PixlyPenguin I’m determined to learn it by myself, I already taught myself how to tune it and fix a couple minor issues but there’s some more advanced problems that would be helpful if I saw someone else fix them first
Thank you for doing these. I'm learning how to fix pianos to make my great grandmother's sing once again for my dad. I love my father so much and I want to do something special for him so i decided want to learn how to fix them
The first key of my piano like, when you press it and let go it will stay pressed until you pull it back up so have u ever fixed a piano that had that problem?
holy shit...I had no idea even something that simple would be so in detail...Replacing the pin with your handy dandy pin holder device that has a ton of different pins?!?! wth! I'm sure the big daddy Steinways get crazy with details.

Is a dead key one that cannot be played and remains "down"? I teach piano lessons to a family, the children are wonderful students, but the mom got the piano from the side of the street😢. It's rather horrible to play, and it has at least one dead key. On a side note, would it be very hard for a senior woman like me to do piano tuning? I'm afraid the pieces of the piano might be too heavy. I have more often thought of tuning pianos of my students. Possibly??? Thank you for the great video!! Miss Monique 🙂🙏🌷💗
I am interested in seeing the reply from the piano doctor as well. I tune my own piano at home. I am not a professional and I'm quite sure I'm not doing it perfectly, but there aren't any heavy pieces to move. There are 1 to 3 strings per key though so it is tedious and if even one string is out of tune it is VERY noticeable. It took my piano teacher multiple trips to tune my piano when I was a kid getting lessons.
My father’s Obermier upright was a nomads around 1900 to 1910. It had a cracked sound board and the hammer tips had gone soft through years of use. I couldn’t get anyone to try tuning it so it ended bring scrapped. It’s sad because he always kept it in tune. He just wasn’t able to repair the hammer felts.
Detail for choosing right size for new pin, is to pick next size bigger from pin that's replaced. That's roughly 0,025mm larger pin. That way it fits tightly in wooden part. Bushings might have to be reamed a bit, since pin is slightly larger.
For a few years after we moved houses, the bass clef of our piano was dead, until we opened it up and realized we forgot to take the blankets out when moving it
So that the excess doesn't intrude upon the other keys beside it and so that the hammer can swing freely to a certain extent. If the hammer swings slowly, it means the hammers hinge is too tight, and if it swings too fast, it means the hammer is too loose. You want the hammer to be able to return to its original position easily and safely so these measures are done to do so.
the older i get the more i understand why being a mechanic or repair man for one certain thing isnt all that bad. you learn the ins and outs of that thing and most repairs are routine but then there are plenty curveballs that keep it interesting and give you a reason to rack your brain and figure out the puzzle

Why cut the excess and then just trying it
So that the excess doesn't intrude upon the other keys beside it and so that the hammer can swing freely to a certain extent. You want the hammer to be able to return to its original position easily and safely so these measures are done to do so.
because the pin costs a fratction of a cent
