Most employers will terminate an employee for airing their opinions on social media if those posts bring any embarrassment to the company or the supervision. Not just a government job. Here's what I tell my friends and family. Don't post anything on social media. It can come back and haunt you forever.
When social media and Facebook were shiny and new, a co-worker regularly posted about her negative interactions with our customers. Our IT dude warned her (and everyone else) not to post stuff like that, and she was eventually terminated. When my boss and I went through her emails, there were *hundreds* of non-work related garbage from online shopping sites and junk notifications she'd signed up for using the company's computer, revealing why she wasn't getting her assigned work done on time. All this to reiterate what's already been said: RTFM!
@@Sara-mf3px It's a little bit of Colum A and Colum B here, based on what I read. I'll admit I have some doubts that a 3rd grader was interested in most of what she was talking about. Far more likely that they were getting her to go off on a tangent to avoid work.
It doesn't matter what the video was about. The district has a case and I am saying this as a former teacher myself. It is really dumb to air your work problems on Tik Tok.
Literally every job ive ever had tells you not to speak of the company on social media . Why is she confused that she's not welcomed back . She should have took her complaints somewhere besides TikTok . I am confused on what her goal was to begin with .

Anyone in a professional position needs to mind their conduct at all times. I knew of a supervisor who was out of control at a bar. The police were called. The bar management banned her from ever returning. Her conduct was so outrageous that a local newspaper write about it, including identifying the troublemaker by name. I don't know if I'd go that far. I can understand when someone goes on a racist rant, but she didn't do anything like that and the school district even said it had nothing to do with the content. I personally can only stand social media in very small doses, but I definitely sympathize for this woman. I say the school district should focus on more important things and let the woman teach. We need all the good teachers we can get, especially here in Texas where the education system leaves a lot to be desired.
As a teacher, she should know that the First Amendment she so readily invokes protects us from legal consequences only, not professional or financial ones. Do you think the CEO of Coca Cola would keep his job if he went on record saying Pepsi is better?
Let's get this straight. Your take on the First Amendment misses the mark. In public schools, the district is a government entity. When they mess with a teacher's livelihood because of speech, it raises serious red flags for potential First Amendment violations. It's not just about professional consequences; it's about the government encroaching on constitutional rights.
You misunderstand the first amendment. The first is implicated anytime a state actor impinges on speech. Here the school district is a state actor. Your analysis ignores pretty much the entire body of first amendment Supreme Court case law.
Yeah but she's on her white woman syndrome kick right now so when she got booted and lost her case she called up the new station to cry to them because she apparently does not have enough attention in your life that she turns to social media and the News Network for any attention
Actually the insanity on both sides of this issue effect us all as public education has devolved into a woke mess. Was she being an activists inviting kids to civil disobedience for woke causes disrupting instruction or truly equipping kids to know their rights that were being violated?
As a teacher myself, I am wondering.... The principal spoke to you and gave you a list of concerns, and instead of working on those concerns, you posted it on TikTok... Ohhhhhhhhhh kayyyyyyy...🤷♂

The way she spoke made me think that maybe the school district had valid concerns. Was she really teaching the students about their "constitutional rights"? Maybe she was just way out of her depth and too arrogant to acknowledge it.
She exposed them, that district has gender curriculum for elementary students yet administers are more concerned about her teaching students about their rights and country.

Not all "accountability" is good. When the rule itself is messed up then being held accountable for violating it is even more messed up than the rule itself. Firing a teacher for publicizing that the school threatens to fire you for teaching kids what their legal rights are is pretty messed up.
I fail to see what an adult airing her grievances about a private, work meeting on TikTok hoped to accomplish. I question her judgement. This is standard operating procedure. You can't criticize your employee in public. You'll get fired from any job. She should have stayed "general" and talked about problems that teachers in general can have. Could have easily used cover and talked about hypotheticals than using a real life example.
For a teacher not too terribly bright. She has a meeting where its pointed out she needs to improve in some areas of her work performance, and she chooses to broadcast it to the world, mocking her supervisors, and the entire system she works in. And she is surprised she gets fired?

I'm seriously shocked that anyone as childish as this woman has shown herself to be could have ever been hired in the first place.
People need to be careful what they say or do on social media. Prospective employers go on there and see what you've put out there. They won't hire you if they see you as problematic. In most cases, when you apply to a school district, during your interview the Administrators are looking at your grades, your studies, background, teaching style and so on. They want to make sure that you are a good match to their program. When you are hired, you develop your education plan in accordance to the school district's guidelines. However, the best teachers I ever had were the ones who would teach the curriculum but encourage their students to seek out more information. To go to the library. To do research. And fortunately, my father would encourage us kids to question what we were being taught to expand our knowledge. For example, he asked me, "When Columbus discovered America, who did he encounter? It was Native Americans. When Leif Ericson discovered America before Christopher Columbus, who did he encounter? Native Americans." That's the discussion we had 53 years ago.

I don't know either side of this story and in 2023 when school districts care more about putting biological boys into girls sports than the safety of our kids and teachers care more about coming out to their students and making sure everyone has their own pronouns than they do about teaching math and history it's really hard to pick a side on this one.
Sound like a lost Republican, all yall can think about is lgbtq this lgbtq that. Like that’s what’s really going on in our schools. Less than 1% of students are trans. Get a life
Yep this teacher went to capital for some trans rights bill & called out white people for not supporting that nonsense. A white child in her class could face discrimination
Your knowledge of gay/trans kids is I'm thinking based on what sites like this decide is "news"as in gets views. I'm betting you've never met a trans person in your life. (I'm gay and know several LGBTQ people. Young people I know are coming out as one or the other almost every day, it's estimated about a quarter of all Gen Zers identify as something other than straight.) Their biggest fear is all the people who know nothing about them but what their politicians and news sites tell them. Most of them are okay, just seem more prone to anxiety and depression than my generation. They are nothing to fear, if you just talk to them. They are not coming after your kids: they are your kids. Fox News recently paid out several millions of dollars in a lawsuit brought against them by companies that processed ballots in the last election. They sued for slander over being accused of costing Donald Trump the election by mishandling election results, and they won. Internal memos at Fox News were discovered that showed they decided not to run stories that showed the election was fair. The memos also showed their reason for this: polls showed they lost viewers when they did not play up the idea that the election was somehow rigged. The elections are done, but I suspect how they keep you coming back now is with the latest outrages supposedly committed by the LGBTQ folks. I don't feel good about trans women in sports either, but did you know transgender kids have a 50% chance of getting assaulted on school property at some point? Gay and trans kids are more likely than straight teens to be assaulted, sex trafficked, kicked out of their home, murdered. Statistically, they are the ones at risk for harm. That's the way it is, but it's not news any more than the latest biological woman murdered by her boyfriend or ex is news. Domestic violence is the leading cause of death for young women in this country, and it's estimated 1 in 4 girls are molested before they turn 18. Not a transwoman or drag queen in sight, just biological men that are comfortable with their gender, and with hurting women. For the record liberals I know have their own biases, also the result of what they see on a screen while they ignore real life and forget to talk to people. I've had that discussion too.
Austin has gone down the drain. I first went to Austin in the late 1950s. I enjoyed Austin in the 60s & 70s. But, by the 90s Austin was starting to decline. I visited last time in 2016. It was horrible. I sadly will never visit Austin again. The liberal city government has run it into the ground. The liberals & corperations have ruined the capital of our great state. It is very sad.

Freedom of speech is a foundational right for everyone! If workers could not criticize their employers Unions would have no power. WHY ISN'T THE TEACHERS UNION SUPPORTING HER???
Freedom of speech does not protect your personally🤦. That's like saying I can call someone a bad word and if they get upset they are violating my first amendment rights. She legally can say what ever she wants and not get into legal trouble but you better believe words can get you into personal trouble. I don't understand why people don't understand this. You think you can just go into your work and start cursing and yelling and then say you can't fire me because of the 1st amendment. Get outta here with that BS.
They fired her for vague & unspecified reasons. That's what happens in a so-called "nation of laws". Make the laws vague & essentially meaningless, & lawyers get to argue whatever they think it means. If their rhetoric is good, they win; if it's not so good, they lose. In any case, the defendant always loses bc there's no way to prepare for a vague & nonspecific set of charges.
Posting about a private meeting on SM is a breach of privacy established in any code of conduct. She deserves to get fired. Let alone the entitlement and total lack of professionalism she showed by complaining. She is a teacher , acting like a 15yo student!! When will people learn that rights also come with obligations? She won't go to jail for posting about it and criticizing her boss (free speech) but she would definitely get fired for it !! Congrats to the school!!
Well... taking the news story at face value, it sounds like an open and shut case of "violating school policy". But a few people have left comments giving her FULL statement, that the news story conveniently stopped short of: "Today I got pulled into a 'check in' with my administrator at school and she had this lovely list of concerns that she wanted to bring to my attention... (this is where the news story cuts off), but my favorite amongst them is... We've noticed an *intentional attempt at teaching your students about their legal and constitutional rights*. That's the concern. They're concerned. Why are you concerned? Why is that a concern? Why does it concern you?" This is followed by her statement that "It was the fact that there were 'disruptions" to the operations of the schools BECAUSE of the TikTok." Which leads me to ask "what KIND of disruptions?". HOW was teaching students about their "legal and constitutional rights" disrupting? Maybe they're focused on teaching kids that they can be 27 genders and that they can "identify" as the opposite gender than what they are? Maybe that's not the case, but it makes me wonder. This IS Austin, after all. Despite the school's claims that it wasn't the content of the TikTok that upset them, I think they're lying. I think her teaching the students their legal and constitutional rights DID upset them, and they figured that since they couldn't openly object to the content itself without starting controversy, they simply used the school policy to their advantage and fired her. That's just how I see it. Let the insults begin.
I agree with you 100%. Education is the key, schools are here to teach. Texas is following gov. Abbott's orders & he along with his followers take orders from tRump. They don't want our kids to know the truth about our laws, constitution, climate, etc. School administrations only care about money, warm body count & obeying everything that Abbott throws at them. Abbott wants public schools to fail that's why he's pushing for private school vouchers. 🇺🇸💙🇺🇲💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇲💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇲
She taught her kids NOT to stand for the pledge of allegiance because America is a fascist state like Nazi Germany & that it's their right not to stand. Obviously it's their right but that wasn't the issue even though she took to tiktok to lie about it and act like the school didn't want them teaching about rights. Also you don't have rights in fascist states so she's just a braindead leftist activist teacher. This is the THIRD time I saw this woman in the news over this.
she was encouraging her students to not participate in the national anthem and comparing it to Nazi Germany. A teacher of the third grade should not be talking about Nazi Germany at all and certainly not comparing the US to it.
1:05 "Chetty violated the district's social media policy in the employee handbook, it states if an employee's use of electronic communication action interferes with employee's ability to perform his or her duties, it could lead to termination." Ironically, it was the district who interfered with Chetty's ability to perform her duties.
It's not just that TikTok video. It started because she was injecting questionable, narrow interpretations of select parts of the Constitution and law to her third-grade students while mixing in the same racism, sexism, genderism, and ageism that she used so frequently in her activism and on social media - all of which is tied together in her ideology. She's also advocated violence against law enforcement and other government authority that doesn't behave according to her racist, sexist, genderist, ageist world view. I'm Black. I don't want anyone of any race or ethnicity or age or sex or gender teaching kids that white or Black or Latino people are racists, or to discriminate and judge people based on their age, or to hold sexist and genderist views of any other sex or gender. If this teacher was a white guy named Bob Smith and he had her history no one would bat an eye, they'd just be "Yeah, that guy needs to go."
What did she actually say in the TikTok? That would be useful in a news story about the event!
She went on social media to cry to a bunch of strangers about a meeting she had with her bosses and they got wind of it if I went on social media and started bad-mouthing my boss and he saw it damn straight I won't be working there

For example, he asked me, "When Columbus discovered America, who did he encounter? It was Native Americans. When Leif Ericson discovered America before Christopher Columbus, who did he encounter? Native Americans."
That's the discussion we had 53 years ago.
That's great, except Columbus never encountered "native Americans"

Airing your issues with your employer on social media is a very dumb thing to do.
Why do people think their every thought and act need to be announced to the world? Get your kids out of public schools if you can. I know it's easier said than done, but the pain now is going to be less than when they are fully indoctrinated by the time they are 18. There are no good role models for your children.
Some people just need to learn professionalism. Know what to do and what not to do 🤷🏾♀️
If there is a clause in her contract about social media or if there is a policy about it that is district wide, then she knew about it and ignored it.

Then that's not freedom of speech.
@@ERIN_198 freedom of speech does not mean you are free of any consequence. If you call your friend ugly, and it negatively impacts your friendship, that is your consequence. Why would you publicly post online details of your private meeting with your employer? What did she expect to happen? She is a teacher? Is she an example of why our educational system is in so much trouble?
It wasn't a prudent decision. But I can understand her being upset that the administration chastised her for teaching students about the holocaust.
@@RuthB51 , Thank you for the deeper explanation. The video did not state that her true issues stemmed from her teaching students about the Holocaust. Prior to the pandemic 😷 a teacher in the Midwest lost his job after he taught and showed horrific pictures of Emmett Till to his students. @@phalynwilliams4119 The full story was that she taught students about the holocaust, including how propaganda and loyalty oaths were used to indoctrinate the German public. During an assembly, some students didn't rise and take the pledge, and the school blamed her.
I think she should have filed a whistleblower complaint. Going on TikTok was a bad idea.
There’s a great essay out there somewhere called “Let’s Face It.” It discusses the employer employee relationship. In summary, the idea is, let’s face it, as an employee, your number one responsibility is to please your boss. If you can’t, go find another job or the employer will force you to.

She deserved to be fired, obviously. When you are a teacher and you act like a spoiled 8th grader... you need to be thrown out of the position so they can hire an adult.
If a person's values are so misguided that he/she would even think that such behavior is appropriate for a teacher, then that person has no business spending 8 hours a day with other people's children. People really need to know what social media are for and separate that from their professional lives.
Ma’am, teach what is in the program. Don’t be quick to go on social media to discuss or expose things related to your job (be professional). If you have a concern, talk to your boss (in this case, the board).

Nothing Sophia did was wrong. There is nothing bad about teaching kids their rights and informing them they can sit during the pledge of alliegiance (what a load of crock that we even do a "pledge"), nor is it wrong to show how the virulent nationalism and bigotry on the right is exactly the same as that which fueled atrocities like the holocaust.

“…lawyers ARE making an argument.” Not “is making an argument.”

Austin has gone down the drain.
I first went to Austin in the late 1950s. I enjoyed Austin in the 60s & 70s. But, by the 90s Austin was starting to decline.

As if it's so hard to NOT make a video about a meeting with your employer on social media. People are so attention seeking it's crazy.
They fired her for vague & unspecified reasons. That's what happens in a so-called "nation of laws". Make the laws vague & essentially meaningless, & lawyers get to argue whatever they think it means. If their rhetoric is good, they win; if it's not so good, they lose. You are insulting 15 yr old students😀. More like spoiled 5 yr old with bad parents
Why would you post that on social media in the first place?
Well... taking the news story at face value, it sounds like an open and shut case of "violating school policy". But a few people have left comments giving her FULL statement, that the news story conveniently stopped short of:
"Today I got pulled into a 'check in' with my administrator at school and she had this lovely list of concerns that she wanted to bring to my attention... (this is where the news story cuts off), but my favorite amongst them is... We've noticed an *intentional attempt at teaching your students about their legal and constitutional rights*. That's the concern. They're concerned. Why are you concerned? Why is that a concern? Why does it concern you?"
This is followed by her statement that "It was the fact that there were 'disruptions" to the operations of the schools BECAUSE of the TikTok."
Which leads me to ask "what KIND of disruptions?".
