I've been listening to your voice all day. When I just learned my mom had been taken to the ER, I felt such a stab of anxiety. Then I turned your voice back on and it soothed me through that moment of panic. I thank you. Truly ❤
Your ancestors deserve Europeans admiration and respect. Imo,the Persians didn't just want to conquer Greece but eventually into Europeans. They were the heroes and protectors of Europe.
@@EstbXCIII thank you sir I’m very proud to be Greek 🇬🇷 I’m actually Aegean from Lesvos but the main land fought very bravely against Persia which is also a very amazing empire
Thankyou so much! For better or worse I will go off on a tangent sometimes, it breaks the monotony of the long scripts for me. Appreciate your comment and thanks for listening.
Thank you so much for going in depth of Greek history, Honestly, their history has always been shrouded in mythology and great storytelling. You give factual connectivity.
Glad you like them! Mythology is good fun, and Greek history so often blurs the lines, especially going back so far. I think that is part of the fun. Thanks again for watching.
@45:36 thank you for reminding me to never give up. I am having such a difficult time in life atm. I am going to have to just 'Go Spartan'. Thank you so much for this and helping me sleep/relax. I appreciate it so much.
The most important tips about Greek pronunciation: C is always said as K, not S; G always as “hard G” as in got, not J; and terminal Es are sounded (as our EE), not silent Another, less important is that O isn’t always that in Got, it’s often that in Go (UK speakers make this mistake a lot). Also, there is no SH sound in Classical Greek, Lycia is Ly-kee-ah, not Ly-shuh, for example. These rules are simple and easy, but following them will eliminate most common errors.
Yes thankyou so much, this was an older video and I've since improved my pronunciations a lot. The problem is once you hear it one way, you assume its correct. The newer videos about Greece are a lot better in this regard, thanks again for those quick rules, they really help.
I’m enjoying this so much, thank you! I only fall asleep if it’s evening and I’m tired. I love to be awake so I can learn, but when I do conk out, it’s simple enough to go back a bit the next time. MYou have the best Greek pronunciation of any native-English speaker I ever heard (except for a few of those with degrees in Classics, but most of them are awful, too). Congratulations on being the only person I ever heard who doesn’t mispronounce hoplite as hop-light! I usually spend the whole time trying to figure out what the heck they could mean, at least with words I don’t already know. Most native English speakers have that mental inflexibility that prevents them from disregarding inapplicable English rules, plus they they’re working from Latinized spellings of Greek words for some strange reason. I’m no expert myself, but I do make an effort and look things up, it only takes one second on the Net these days. I appreciate your correct pronunciation efforts a lot. Keep up the great work, I’m going to listen to them all, with appreciation and pleasure🙂
The movie “300” was rightfully criticized, but it lead me to read “Gates Of Fire” which lead me to go down the rabbit hole of Greek history in general. Which is how I got here. When I saw “The Warriors” back in the day it didn’t prompt me to go research Ancient Greek history. Just saying…
Thanks so much for feeding my brain historical knowledge while i sleep. Your awesome accent is the icing on my sleepytime cake🍰 and your little bits of humor and opinions are my sprinkles. Good stuff. Appreciation from the eastcoast of Canada 🇨🇦

1:20:00 - Define "speaking with the gods", from a Pantheistic perspective preferably. Anyway, the issue of Gaia and Python being the original, pre-Indoeuropean, form of the Oracle is particularly interesting, because it totally fits the theory of one of my dearest teachers on the paths of life, Casilda Rorigáñez Bustos (search her personal site to download her books in Spanish, especially "El Asalto al Hades", which is most relevant here). She claims that the legend of the dragonslayer, of which Apollo's slaying of Python is archatypal, is not the saving of the virgin by the slayer but all the opposite: her enslavement by the murder of her ancient pre-Indoeuropean (Vasconic) consort, the dragon (originally a snake or serpent in fact, as retained in the Basque legend of Sugaar, the male aspect of that ancient gender-binary monotheism). Incidentally Gaia is to this very day read in Basque as "the matter" and "the capability".
Ch (kh) in Greek is as the ch in loch, or just as K - this is much better than using our Ch. Kh is difficult for many English speakers, including me. So, Chalkidice is really Khalkidike, pronounced Kal-ki-dee-kee. C was the Latin version of K, which, much later, sometimes was/is pronounced as S. Then, we got that from French. But, never in Greek, Ancient or Modern, where C is always the K sound.
I assume you are referring to 300. You know for me I just went in reminding myself that it was more of an adaptation of the graphic novel, rather than the actual historical account. That being said, early Greek history has that influence of mythology, and it's the victors telling the story, look at Herodotus blowing things out of proportion in other cases. Now the one thing that I found truly off-putting was how they depicted Xerxes, I thought that was unfair. I don't expect a huge amount from Hollywood and don't often watch movies anymore, so I don't care too much when they make a "historical" film because I am not the target demographic.
@@ASMR_Historian - Yes "300". Later in the video (technically another video) you admitted that Iranians were outraged by the depiction of Xerxes. Well, I'm not Iranian (Basque actually) and have never met an Iranian in person, and I only watched that movie once in TV (totally uninterested in the idea of celebrating Spartan proto-fascism and ultra-militarism, really) and I find it horrible in all possible senses, clearly racist against Persians (who surely deserve criticism as imperialist and arrogant but were nothing like what is depicted in the movie). Anyway, all the rest is also pretty horrible (and annoyingly yellow filtered from the beginning to the end, a horrible visual choice), it's even worse misrepresentation of history than "Aguirre the Wrath of God", which at least had a good starring actor and was not color-filtered (but has almost nothing to do with the actual Lope de Aguirre, "Eldorado" is a much better historical movie on the same theme). Anyway, re. "300": which is the story other than gratuitous cheers for one side and loathing for the other? What even happens in the story other than lots of Hollywoodian action scenes? All one can say in favor of that movie is that it had an inflated budget.

The Iranians were not happy with that movie, expecially the portrayl of Xerxes, can't say I blame them.

Hello in the comments was said.
The movie was not great: all yellow shades, Persians depicted as almost monstruous, totally ridiculous Hollywoodian crap. The worst I've ever watched.
