Annual revenue from the Suez Canal fell by nearly a quarter in Egypt's last fiscal year as some transport companies moved to the waterways instead to avoid attacks by Houthi militants in the Red Sea. According to a report by Reuters.
Revenue fell to $ 7.2 billion in the 2023-2024 fiscal year from 9.4 billion in the previous fiscal year, the head of the Suez Canal Authority Osama Rabie said on Thursday.
Rabie said the number of ships crossing the Suez Canal had dropped to 20,148 in 2023-2024 from 25,911 last year.
It should be noted that the Suez Canal, one of the world's most important waterways, is a major source of foreign currency for Egypt, and the country's authorities have been trying to increase its revenue in recent years, including through Expansion period in 2015 and so on.
Since November last year, Iranian-backed Yemeni militants have attacked commercial vessels in the Red Sea, the entrance to the southern Suez Canal and in the Indian Ocean.
