It's a bad sign when you're nostalgic for the times of Watergate when elected officials still faced actual consequences for their actions...
Right now, the Biden Administration is being charged for Russiagate and Chinagate.
shit is fucked yo
Or better yet, when contacting a member of Congress got results instead of an answering machine
Nixon was never arrested…..
@@__mindflayer__ he resigned to avoid it, you know what he meant. Unlike more recent people like Cheetah von Tweeto there was at least SOME sort of consequence, instead of him blaming everyone else and getting ppl hurt and even killed
Get caught selling weed: Jail Time
Get caught being corrupt, abusing major government divisions: Resign
The worst thing that came out of Watergate wasn't the abuse of power or cover up, but the -gate suffix.
I absolutely hate it.
1) Not every scandal is on par with Watergate.
2) It was called Watergate because of it's location, not because it had something to deal with water.
The media loves the -gate for some reason, maybe it makes them feel nostalgic for a time when gumshoe reporters were on the beat doing hard work, or maybe it's just so they can hyperventilate and stir up outrage in the viewers to get better retention and ratings.
-gate suffix is likely continuous tradition of how to name English castle and fort. Imagine every castle hide its secret and treasure, while public and journalist act as trebuchet.
There are wards of the City of London (the actual city, not Greater London) that are named after historic city gates to this day, for instance “Bishopsgate”
Screw it, Name everything after Teapot dome. Partypot dome, Russiapot dome, whatever
Pizzagate lmao
Me too, the press think it’s cute when they do that..It’s rather tiresome now.
When Richard Nixon was with visit into Beijing marxist junta he was brought into a tour on the Forbidden City. There he saw a pair of ear plugs made of gold.
"What are these for?"
"These are golden ear plugs for the ancient emperors to not hear other peoples' criticism."
"I'll take two!"
True story
I think he said "give me a pair" in the recording but message still holds
I saw the footage

Hell yes! This was very well done! Educational and sticks to the facts with the historical aspect and relates to modern events without giving any conservatives (or liberals) any hearsay to whine about. This was excellent mate, thankyou for the great content and please keep it coming
conservatives and liberals might as well be the same thing, given how they don't intend on changing our broken societal systems, and consistently misunderstand and mislabel ideologies that do.

I've often said if Richard Nixon had only served 1 term, he might have gone down as a decent President since he gave the United States universal kidney dialysis care (see John Oliver's segment on this) and the Environmental Protection Agency, which is surprising given that he was a Republican and I doubt any of them today would campaign on issues like these. Sure, he had a lot of issues as President, but the American public didn't find out about them until his 2nd term mostly thanks to Watergate.
So your saying Republicans don't give two shits about people which would be wrong alot of Republicans WAnt to help but democrats turn everything we do it racism or being homophobic

You are literally a 12yo who plays fortnite and doesn't know anything about politics.
@@Bennyz18 it is.
he wound up firing the 1st head of the EPA(Ruckelshaus).
Nixon also gave them Amtrak, saving their passenger rail network from certain death (even though he only did it for the positive press and expected it to fold in a few years)!
Nixon was lucky that Ford saw merit in pardoning him. His aides still went to jail and honestly I do not see why Nixon should have been different. Kind of created a moral hazard for the future.
You know, Richard Nixon actually committed an act of treason during the Vietnam War. While Nixon was running for President in 1968, President Lyndon Johnson wanted to begin new peace talks between the North and South to try to end the war within the next year or 2 (and some believe that this could have worked had Vice President Hubert Humphrey won in 1968). However, Nixon secretly contacted the leaders of both sides in Vietnam and basically told them to not make any deal with Johnson and wait until after the election, because if Nixon won he promised to provide both with a better deal which (unknown to the public at the time) was his "secret plan" as he called it. According to the U.S. Constitution, Treason (which is the ONLY crime fully defined within the document) is providing aid or comfort to an enemy that we are fighting during a time of war. And even when President Johnson called Nixon to confront him on this, Johnson knew Nixon was obviously lying when Nixon said that he wasn't preventing Johnson's new peace talks from happening, but Johnson couldn't do anything about it. So yeah, Richard Nixon committed an actual act of treason but the public didn't know about this potentially damaging piece of evidence that could hurt him as President and the United States when they had voted for him in 1968, and it's thanks to this action by Nixon that the Vietnam War lasted an additional 5 years and costs thousands more American lives.
Yeah watergate was maybe the 10th worst thing Nixon did in office
@derzzsh we forgetting the warcrimes Obama committed, the civilians that were bombed
@@nationradicalWhat were the other 9 worse things that Tricky Dick did.
The sad part is that Nixon accomplished many things and would have been remembered as one of America's better Presidents if only he hadn't been corrupt and paranoid...but then he wouldn't have been Nixon.
Well he had been nicknamed Tricky Dick for a reason
The best thing is that "Ehrlichmann" literally translates to "honest-man"
Ha! Brilliant!
Ironic
Your animations get better and better John, the atmosphere you show with the Saturday Night Massacre, and the second break-in at the Watergate, superb :)
In the interview with David Frost, the closest we got to hearing an apology from Nixon was the following:
"I let the American people down and I have to carry that burden with me for the rest of my life,"
12:19 I still can't look at a lobster without hearing Robin Williams's voice saying that..! 🦞🦀😂
Me too hahaha
Another consequence of Watergate (at least indirectly) In 1987 President Ronald Reagan nominated Robert Bork, then a circuit court judge for a position on the Supreme Court. But the Democrats, lead by Senator Ted Kennedy, were so incense by the idea that they launched an aggressive and frankly personal attack and defeated the nomination. The episode gave us the verb "Bork/Borked/Borking" and, according to some, but especially conservative activists, is the start of the modern day politicization of the Supreme Court.
Also, you raised the question as to whether or not Nixon would have been impeached had he had a network of conservative media to support him. That's funny because that is the same question former Nixon staffer and CEO of Fox News, Roger Allies, raised as well.
Im so happy you put in a Gray Fox reference with the Deep Throat references
It's kinda funny Nixon's I'm not a crook speech took place at Disneyworld
The man never drank a Duff in his life.
But relating history with contemporary events is the most artistic part of History
Even if that contemporary history of impeachments where built on proven lies(Russiagate). He wrap it around and insinuated Nixon and Trump alike, but didn't clarify that Trump survived because Trumps voter base believed they were being manipulated by left wing media. They were right to not trust the corporate media and Nixon's case was actual real with tangible proof so good video with less than good ending but it was a nice attempt.
18:24 The British public thank you for this reference.
My favourite anecdote is that American Football player Joe Namath appeared on Nixon’s List of Enemies.
It was Vapor lock
I find it so insane that Nixon's famous "I'm not a crook" statement was made at Disneyworld
Great job on the video. Just one little thing. I noticed that when you drew Senator Daniel Inouye (17:03 - 17:05), he had two arms. Inouye lost his right arm to a grenade wound in WW2, so he only has his left arm. Just to point that out.
But above all, good work. Hope you continue making more videos.
Your Nixon impression is spot on!!!! Please tell me, good Sir, how long did you practice it?
You're almost SNL good with your impressions!
Not to mention how well researched and evenhanded your content is. That's why I'm a subscriber!!!!!
I heard that the Watergate burglars were caught because of a piece of Scotch tape. The burglars used tape to hold the lock of the door they’d use to escape open. Apparently they foolishly placed the tape sideways so it stuck out the door. The building’s janitor saw the tape and pulled it out. Later, the burglars replaced the tape but didn’t change the alignment. The Janitor returned to see the new tape in a building supposedly empty and thus called the police.
Yes, and he was the security guard.
_Scotch tape?_ Duct tape.
Deep throat had me rollin' 🤣
In a alternative universe a man by name of Bolivar Trask and president Nixon held a conference to show the might of a mutant killing robots known as the sentinel. However a mutant would lift an entire baseball stadium around the White House to turn the robots into his own weapons.
Hey John. I was wondering if you could have a look at the Guildford 4 case as it is to date one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in the UK. The UK government has also recently decided to seal documents of police corruption surrounding the case. Particular those that point to a perversion of the course of justice.
Amazing video! always love to see an upload!
Hi u were at my school today ! U were very cool just subscribed
I remember watching on the PBS UA-cam channel highlights of the Senate Watergate Hearings, specifically what the Chairman of the Committee, Sam Arvin said at the opening of Committee hearings:
"(...) we are beginning these hearings today in an atmosphere of utmost gravity. The questions that have been raised in the wake of the June 17 break-in, strike at the very underguarding of our democracy. If the many aligations made to this date are true, then the burglars who broke into the Headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate were in effect breaking the home of every citizen of the United States. If these aligations prove to be true [then] what they were seeking to steal was not the jewels, money or other property of the American people, but something much more valuable, their most precious heritage, the right to vote in a free election,"
Thank you for relating this to the present. You do a really succinct job at that!
Naturally I've heard of and had a vague idea about what Watergate involved, but this video really gave me a better understanding of the scandal. Very informative.
Great work John!
Ok….how the hell did America not break up for this fiasco? I’m I being pessimistic about my country?
I think if something like this would to occur right now in the present political environment, it probably tear us apart.
These are always great
Amazing video as always!
Super interesting breakdown of the scandal. Thanks!
Wonderful job as always
Can you please make a video on the dissolution of the USSR?

The last bit of the video, more specifically the question, is actually a very interesting take on this in this day and age.
Also, My grandma met Nixon 😳 She shook Nixon’s hand!

Slightly more complex clothing
Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Cosby, Carol Channing, and John Lennon were also on Nixon's enemy list.
One person met their minimum of time in jail. Everyone else got off pretty easy compared to the time they should have served.
If Nixon had put Gump in a different hotel, this scandal would never happen
Great video!!! I also love your 1 hour Presidents video as well!!! :)
Did you draw Daniel Inouye with 2 arms?
He only had the one.
Well spotted! My mistake! It happens on occasion.
I think we all know this video deserves more views

Great Nixon voice on 11:50-12:19 and again in 15:23-15:41
If I remember correctly, the smoking gun tape was released AFTER the tapes were given to the special prosecutor. He withheld the tape after he turned over his tapes
Thank you for this video, my eyes are open now. I wish this would work in Russia but I'm hopeful.
I love America.
gotta learn more about Nixon mans got an interesting tale
Great vid! Crazy how much Trump got away with in comparison to Nixon…bet he’s rolling in his grave 😂
You know Russiagate is a proven lie right? Watergate was true they had checks and real stuff to prove it, show me proof of what Trump got away with. Whats the saying tell a lie enough if becomes truth, stop trusting controlled corporate media and that includes FOX. More similar to Nixon the DNC did open unwarranted investigations using the FBI into a sitting US president off the Steel dossier which is a proven fake report paid for by the Clinton foundation.

Americans in 1970's: The President spied on his political opponents? That's an outrage! He must resign!
Americans in the 21st century: The President spied on his political opponents? Meh, it happens all the time.
Voting for a video about Japan the almost 100 years after the bomb next….. because seen no one talking about that period.
Imagine this mattered so much back then. Today worse things happen every day and hardly get a serious mention in the press. This one would have been swept under some carpet. Some cash would change hands and that would be it. Look at the things Trump got away with.
Absolutely no way modern Republicans would convict Trump.
