  • If I were trying to convince someone NOT to obey the Law of Moses, this is THE GO TO chapter to verse pluck from. We will read the entire chapter and go verse by verse and decode the difficult lines including the references to the Sabbaths and Feasts, Hagar and Mt. Sinai and the elementary principles of the world. Once the context established, you'll see that this chapter is not teaching against the Law of God but the false doctrines of men, whether based on the Bible or idolatry. There is only Truth and error, regardless of the source. I hope this benefits you as much as it did me!

The main problem with this interpretation is that the Greek word nomos, which is translated as law, is never used in reference to an oral law or tradition. It is always used in reference to a written law. It specifically refers to the Torah. It is used throughout the septuagint to translate the word law (as in law of Moses) and that is how we see it being used throughout the New Testament as well. If you do an in depth study on the greek word nomos, you will see that it is impossible to conclude that it refers to the oral law of the Pharisees, but must refer to the Law of Moses.

    Notes:
1:00 "Torah means instruction and instruction is a better translation than the word law."
2:40 "After Paul left, at some point these Judaizers came in. And the Judaizers were not trying to get them to obey the commandments in the Torah, they were trying to convert them to Judaism."
3:39 "Understand that that is Paul's point. He's going to tell you there is a way of the world, and there is a way of God. And God has pulled you out of the world, why would you want to go back into it? The "world" is going to mean something a little bit different than just carnality and sin."
6:29 "Paul says, 'in the same way, we also'. So what he's doing here is he is equating himself with these pagans. What do Jews and pagans have in common?"
6:49 "So, how was Paul raised in Judaism at the feet of Gamaliel and a pagan raised worshiping idols and all kinds of other stuff...what do they have in common? The answer is the elementary principles of the world....The elementary principles of the would be any principles of the world. And understand that there is Yahweh's way, and the world's way. And the principles of the world...includes man's religion as well as demonic paganism. What do those two things have in common? They are not from the father. So, principles of the world are man made religion and it would be paganism."
    End notes for now.
    My commentary:
It is my understanding that Gal 4:1-2 equates guardians and managers as a good thing. And in the analogy the son is put UNDER the manager/guardian BY THE FATHER. Paul uses this analogy as a COMPARISON when he says in 4:3 "In the same way, we ALSO...." We also what? When we were children, we were in bondage to the elements of the world.
So here is the comparison Paul is making:
    Son.....UNDER....manager/guardian....BY THE FATHER
We.......UNDER....the elementary principles of the world....BY THE FATHER
Gal 4:1-7 is clearly equating the elementary principles of the world with the Mosaic Law.

Thank you for this explanation, I had come to the same conclusion yesterday that Paul is talking to non jews, while typing up a response to somebody that was trying to convince me the law was done away with. Tried to give me Galatians 4:9-11. I read from verse 1 and quickly found the people being talked to were not Jews.
I still think they were turning back to their old idol practices because in verse 9 it says "whose slaves you want to become once more", stating they were slaves to these things before.
Hagar son's Ishmael is the fore father of the Muslim religion. So here Paul is telling them to stop turning to the Nation of Islam. Asking why they are turning to the slave's religion, the promise is through Isiah not Ishmael. To this day, the Turkey population is 99% Muslim (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Turkey). I literally just figured out this last part after watching your video, thanks Brother.

Jesus said what goes in a man's mouth does not make him unclean, but what comes out of the mouth, that comes from the heart. This is the difference between human precepts and teachings of the Torah and what God is saying in the Torah. Do we believe what God is saying or do we refuse to believe what he said and pursue the law as a work? And so we find a desire of God here, which is a clean heart. And how do we, as sinners, achieve a clean heart? What work can we do? The law said do not commit adultery, but Jesus said anyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery in his heart. Again we find ourselves either following the precepts of men, which is to follow the Torah as a work or to believe what God is saying. And if we believe what God is saying how do we change our hearts? The answer is in Psalm 51:10-12, a clean heart, a right spirit comes from God. The scriptures say it is God who works in us both to will and to do his good pleasure. If you do not desire to do what God desires, call on him to change your heart. And if a man, through the work of God in him, desires to do God's will, what law will he break? This is why we preach the gospel and not works of the law, because neither the desire to do Gods will or righteousness comes through works of the law, but through Jesus Christ. This is why Jesus said the work of God is this - to believe in the one that he sent.

Genesis 26:5 says that Abraham kept the Torah. The Torah absolutely existed long before Moses. Scripture demonstrates this plainly in many instances. There were specific things given to Moses about the Tabernacle that were to deal with sin but Gods instructions were given in the Garden.

@@GregWidener Very interesting I never knew the Bible said Abraham had kept his laws & commands. I did know Joseph didn't want to sleep with Potiphar's wife because it would be a "sin against God" (Gen 39:9).
We only know of 1 instruction that was given in the Garden, however Noah's great grand father Enoch (Gen 4:18) whom walked with God (Gen 5:22) was given visions and a whole lot of instructions that he wrote in a book and passed down to his offspring. Could these perhaps be the laws that his decant Abraham and his offspring kept before the Law of Moses? The book of Enoch is not part of our Bibles however it seems as if the Bible writers read his prophecies (Jude 14)

No. The law was good, but that doesn't mean it is applicable to Christians. Paul is saying, you want to be under the law but you aren't even doing it right. If your goal is to be under the law, you are failing at it. In my opinion, you are reading into the passage to think that Paul's reference to the Law means a perverted way of following the law.

I do disagree with your interpretation of the "human precepts and teachings", it is talking about human precepts and teachings regarding anything, including the Torah. The Torah came from God, but the teachings and precepts of the Torah came from men. The scriptures say had Israel pursued the Torah by faith and not as a work they would have attained righteousness. They did not believe what the Torah was saying and they followed the teachings and precepts of men, and pursued it as a work which is why they stumbled. The Torah was telling them about Jesus Christ and had they believed the Torah they would have believed Jesus because the Torah talked about him.

You mixed truth with error by protecting Jewish law tradition. Galatians 2 & 3 clearly trumpets that "The Law of Moses" cannot make any righteous before God. •They are attempting righteousness by adding the law of Moses (bondage - curse) to faith in Christ. Chris alone is the only true righteousness of God. The Law of Moses is "The Tudor" to bring us to Messiah that we might be justified by faith.

Non- Israelites Never were required to keep the laws that Moses gave to Israel.
Please examine and re-understand the proper audience of Galatians 4:5
    ❇️In Galatians 4:5 (NIV)
God sent him to buy freedom for “❇️US❇️” “who were slaves to the law”.......
, so that he could adopt “❇️US❇️” as his very own children.
Who is the “❇️US❇️”.....That was under or a slave to the Law in Galatians 4:5?
All of humanity does not fit into that context.
The proper contextual fact is that All Israelites are not Jews .(AKA: Judah, Benjamin Levi).
Paul was addressing the other Non-Jew Tribes of the Israelite Diaspora living in Galatia; Informing them that they are no longer cut-off but now redeemed through Jesus their Christ.
The Bible was not written to all humanity, but the Israelite diaspora living “Amongst” every Nation, language and tongue on earth.

@@GregWidener You cannot come to Jesus unless the Father draw you ( John 6:43-45 ) ; And the Father does not hear you until you fear him , and start thinking upon his name ( Malachi 3:16-18 ) . This is what the apostle Paul said about this ( Romans 10:13-18 , " For whosoever shall call upon the the name of the Lord shall be saved . How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed ? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard ? and how shall they hear without a preacher ? And how shall they preach , except they be sent ? as it is written , How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace , and bring glad tidings of good things ! But they have not all obeyed the gospel , For Esaias saith , Lord , who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing , and hearing by the word of God . But I say , Have they not heard ? Yes verily , their sound went into all the earth , and their words unto the ends of the world " ) . The apostle Paul ministered to Gentiles and scattered Israelites together ( Acts 9:15 ) . In Galatians 4 , most of what Paul is saying is directed to Israelites . Israel is the only nation to have made a covenant with the God of Israel , the only nation under the laws of God ( Romans 2:11-15 ) . The God of Israel is no respecter of persons ; but in every nation he that feareth him , and worketh righteousness , is accepted with him , and grafted into the covenant of Israel ; but Israel is the only nation to have made a covenant with him . When the children of Israel started breaking the laws of the covenant without repenting of their sins by faith ( like king David did ) , he gave them the law under their mediator ( Moses ) , or husband ; Which was the law of animal sacrifice , or the law of Moses : Remember the mediators ( Moses and Jesus ) give you the law , or instructions , of commandments , or covenant of God the Father ; but when you violate his law , then he gives the mediators , who are the protection for the people a law ( blood of the animals and oblations by works through Moses , and blood of Christ by faith through Jesus Christ ) . In Galatians 4:1-5 , the Israelites were under tutors , the bondage of the law of their mediator Moses ( law of animal sacrifice , or law of works , or schoolmaster ) ; which could not get their sins forgiven , but kept God from killing their flesh/body ; pointing them to the mediator of faith . The mediator Jesus Christ was born under the law of Moses , but he lived by faith ( believing the word of the Father , by obedience ) ; And became the mediator after this death, resurrection , and appearing before the Father in heaven for our sins . All coming under the mediator Jesus , must also live by faith ; not by going through the sacrifice of bulls and goats and oblations ; as they did through the mediator Moses . Now your sins are forgiven , so you may become Sons of the Father . The two sons of Abraham is an allegory of the covenant under the two mediators ( Moses and Jesus Christ ) . Under the law of the mediator Moses , the children of Israel were kept in bondage to the one's who ministered the sacrifice for them ( Leviticus priests ) ; From the times of Sinai to Jerusalem : Now through the mediator which dwells at the right hand of the Father ( Jerusalem from above ) , we are free to become Sons of the Father . We are now under the blood of the only one that the Father will accept ; Jesus Christ . Cast out the bondwoman and her son ( law of animal sacrifice , or law of works through Moses ) ; for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman ( blood of Christ , or law of faith through Jesus Christ ) . So then , brethren , we are not the children of the bondwoman , but of the free . Shalom !

Sir read the entire new testament again and carefully. The Hebrews regardless of their varied sects and interpretations of the LAW had and knew only one law. The judaisers were teaching them(Galatians) that in addition to faith in God, they needed to enjoin themselves to the law of Moses by circumcision an observation of allll its precept. It stumbled the faith of the Galatians because the men that urged this doctrine were reputable and venerable...as it must be, because they were quite ready to separate from the clear teachings and person of the noble apostle Paul. The fundamental teachings of the world are the discernable principles of nature to which men affix their faith and devotions.... like "karma", giving, compassion, obedience, cooperation ect. They are fundamental in that they are necessary/vital for natural human existence but not resulting in obedience to Christ. Paul therefore is urging them for a total and complete devotion to Christ with nothing excluded. He is urging Hebrews away from the tedious but symbolic religion of Moses and gentiles away from escethic nature worship of pagan religion....Paul knows all these bear a modicum of truth but is not the truth Himself.
To Paul, obligating one's self to the laws of any religion is slavery...True freedom rest in a loving relationship with messiah Jesus Christ by and for whom all things were created... even the LAW of Moses. Relationship with Christ lifts the heart far above any dead legalistic obligations.
He proved that all the teachings of Moses pointed to a person, which is Jesus Christ and are not fulfilled outwardly but inwardly in the heart by faith. To go back to these old principles would be to defeat the mission of Christ.
The LAW of God is to be kept but not in the way prescribed under Moses system but by a new and living way through faith in Christ the Lord. No man must teach obedience to law for righteousness/approval regardless of the type law....be it divine, earthly or spiritual as there can be no higher principle than "faith in Christ Jesus". This is that which justifies and gives life and life more abundantly. Aherence to all laws no matter its intent, leads to death - the curse of the law.
The only good and righteous use of the law is to reveal to fallen man his inability to be approved before God by his self efforts...which is the motivation behind all religions - mans attempt at spiritual salvation. Hence the relevance and import of the saviour Christ Jesus of the world. Paul therefore proved conclusively that any other use of the law save for transgression, is to reduce the status of Christ as SAVIOUR."if any man is circumcised (for rigtheousness) he is fallen from Grace". And to fall from grace is to be under law and to be under law is to be under sin and to be under sin is DEATH...
Flee my brother...flee my people from this nice-sounding religion. It is law that allure many through its high sounding moralistic ideals of love for God and obedience to law....intellectually and emotionally appealing promises but it, like Moses, would only lead to perishing in the wilderness. Unable to enter the promise for it cannot aclimatize itself to the free spirit of faith, grace, love and truth.
