In the province of Québec, women are being pushed to keep their last names and not take their husband's last name.
My mom changed her last name when she moved to Sherbrooke Québec 14 years ago. She has her maiden name instead of her married name. One of my aunts got married about 30 years ago and she had to keep her last name and not take her husband's last name.
Women today have the right to keep their last names but the children should have their father's last name, not their mother's.
In Greece, France, Italy, the Netherlands, South Korea, Belgium, Malaysia, Spain and Spanish -speaking countries, and in Islam women traditionally do not take the husband's last name. It's not a new or weird thing. And the kids can choose which parent's surname in some of these places or are given both parent's surnames. Some places have different systems altogether.
Just because something is common in one culture doesn't mean it's common or should be common in all cultures.
