Short trips do the most "damage" to engine oil.
The reason is that in a modern EFI engine, more fuel is injected when the engine is cold in order to keep it running (which is why you can smell fuel coming out of the exhaust in the early stages).
That fuel will seep past the piston rings (compression as well as oil scrapper rings), and end up in the engine oil.
This causes the oil to become both diluted and to break down (detergents in the fuel).
However when the engine oil gets hot (the engine's normal operating temperature) and particularly when the car is driven on the highway,
The fuel that is present in the engine oil gets turned back into a vapour and gets removed via the PCV system (where it gets sucked into the engine, unless you have a catch can).
If this doesn't happen the oil will break down quicker (which is also why "highway miles" are less damaging than "city miles"),
Some engines are more sensitive to this than others,
The ones that I know about (due to having the same car), is the Toyota Camry (2011-2017)
Where if you don't change the oil regularly, you will kill the engine (the piston rings become jammed off centre causing the cylinder bore to become damaged).
Oil and filters are cheap, engines are not.
So stop trying to save a few dollars, at the risk of damaging your engine.

This doesnt only apply to EFI because carburators also have chokes that let more fuel in at cold. Carbs might even add more fuel than EFI. Injectors measure the air and add precise amount of fuel. Carbs dont really do that much.

I use Motul 10w40 on my Ntorq, TVS recommends 3000km or 4 months. My Ntorq runs 2000km average in 4 months and i always change on timely basis. My friend says that i am over caring and over spending. But i think i am doing the right thing. Before this i had a second hand activa on which i learned how to ride and how to properly care of a scooter that activa taught me alot of things before i purchased my Ntorq in 2019. Now some of the things like changing oil, cleaning air filter, disc pads, sparkplug, brakeshoe etc i do it myself and the feeling of caring your vehicle yourself is just something else. To me, the most accurate measure for engines is the quantity of fuel consumed,/ the amount of oil replaced in an oil change. I consider this accurate, no matter how the engine is loaded or used. The only variable is oil temperature, above the break-down temperature of the oil. To determine when to change oil in a gearbox, go by the amount of WORK transmitted through the gears, divided by the quantity of oil in the gear case.

Oil usually gets thicker over time as it goes through the heat cycles......not thinner. If your oil is getting thinner over time.....it is most likely due to fuel dilution.

The oil may appear thicker sue to turning into sludge, the lubricity and shear strength will deplete, in effect thinner, I think that is what is meant. If lots of short journeys combined with cold climate, the oil will often drain very thinned down due to water and fuel in the oil. With diesel engines and air cooled engines oil will degrade faster,

I don't think it is fair to compare new oil to 2 year old oil with 5000 km on it. The comparison should be new oil vs. 2 year old oil at 0km, and nearly new oil vs. 2 year old oil both at 5000 km. Right now we can't tell what part of the degradation is due to being 2 years old or due to 5000 km.
Strangely, new oil can sit in the container for a decade (there is no "best before" date), but once in the engine they say it only lasts a year whether you use it or not. Well, I have a generator that had the same oil in it for 10 years (because it never got used, standby). When I changed it, the oil looked brand new in color.

Usually with bikes, the engine oil capacity is between 1 and 1.5 litres. So we would buy 2 litres ofcourse. So best is to keep the 0.5 litres safe and use it for top up everytime the oil level is near the bottom level mark.

I may do an UOA on it next year or so. I've Seen lots of UOAs in oils at 5 years oil doing fine at low mileages/kms like in this video ... If you can't do proper lab oil analysis, do street oil analysis like me - it's the best analysis for my vehicles that cost less than $2000, and definitely best analysis no money can buy (its free)... 😊 Main tests are: smell (does it smell burnt, or the smell reminds you of petrol - fuel diluted). How does it look on dipstick? Right level, no mayonaise, good color (not too dark), droplet travels down the dipstick with right speed/resistance (rough viscosity test, oil is not too thick nor too diluted). Pour the droplet on piece of toilet paper, check for color, does it create dark rings? (how dark?). That combined will give you a rough estimate.
Some people suggest to try to rub oil between the fingers, but I avoid that test because engine oil is proven to be carcinogenic.

Absolutelly, if oil bottle sits for a long time and you don't shake it, some additives can remain as sediment at the bottom of the bottle. I think its mostly calcium and magnesium which are useful oil additives, but in time can form sediment - it looks like bit of ash on the bottom of the bottle. Shake a bottle for a few times and additives will be diluted in oil back again - so when you pour the oil they will go to your engine, not remain unused at the bottom of the bottle.

Temperature oscilations could cause condensation and oxidation (which is bad), so to make it last longer, its better to keep a used jug of oil inside your house. I have 4 year old engine oil sitting in my CBR and has done only 2k kilometres in last 4 years.
Recently i started riding the bike again, and clocked another one thousand kilometres in a month... And trust me when i say, the engine oil is absolutely clear like a new oil... It has no burnt smell, and its super smooth to rub between the fingers. And the oil level is spot on.
The best part is, engine runs as smooth as on the first day i road it.. and gear shifts are absolutely smooth.
I dont think your analysis is anywhere close to being correct. I think your sample size and method was yoo restricted.
Why?? Because i also happen to have a car with similar running. It had done only 10 k kilometres in 4 years on the same oil. And when i got it serviced recently, the mechanic said your engine oil is still as good as new. He even told me that i should put the same oil back as it will be wasted. He mentioned that the oil still is transparent red colored. He said most cars this age drain black thik oil when drained. Than i finally told him its 4 years old oil, and he was very surprised.
I think people should know the truth about oil life on low running engines... Because only to make more money, we should not waste resources of our planet. We should only do what is required, not because its benifitial to someone else.

If your fuel economy is 60% to that of mfg then do it at 60% mileage then what is mentioned in the service book. You can still take 20% leverage on that. Manufacturers will assume 80% highway run 20% city, same as to show average fuel economy

my car (Hyundai Grand i10) has driven almost 3200 km and one year old car and just done with 2nd service as engine oil is still orange in color and stickey i was not agreed to change the engine oil during 2nd service but service advisor suggested to change the oil as its 1 yr old and i am confuse whether really do i need to change it right now or i can do after atleast 5k run,
service guy said in future if there is any engine related issue found and your record found that you did not change engine oil within 1 yr then i may face some issues, is that correct ? need suggestion

Compare the condition of the oil with one run on the same car doing 5000km with short trips throughout and check the condition after one year. What if the car was used on long trips occasionally for a year and accumulated 5000km in a year? Same with occasional long trips but accumulated 5k in 2 years?

Why have you not given an overview of the important parameter e.g. 'before vs after'?
A simple test of oil is by smelling (fresh vs stinks bad), visual observation (still has got its original color vs it is dark black) and by hand feeling it (feels new and lubricates well vs you can feel particles, hence high density).

I don't give a flying f--- what you so called scientists, lab technicians or anyone else says about your car oil change.
As a top chef, I don't need anyone to tell me when to change my cooking oil & neither do i need to be told when to change my engine oil.
