Actually Catfish Blues was around long before Jimi played his version. Robert Petway was playing it back in the 1940’s. Hendrix did a great version of covering it, can’t take that away from him, just not his original material. Thanks for the lesson.
Catfish Blues is not a spin off of a song by Jimi Hendrix (Voodoo Chile). Catfish Blues a song by Muddy Waters. The Hendrix song was a spin off of Catfish Blues.
Well, actually I don't think you or anyone else can say that Robert Petway "wrote and first performed Catfish Blues." He might have been the first to record it. From the American Blues Scene website: "The “Catfish blues” as it’s most well known, originated “first” by a Mississippi delta bluesman named Robert Petway in 1941, though the most famous line about wishing one was a catfish can be heard on record as early as 1928. That’s to be expected, however; the original delta blues singers freely and frequently borrowed lines from one another. Almost nothing is known about Robert Petway aside from the fact that he recorded sixteen songs in 1941 and ’42. After that, he essentially vanished, and no records of his life, birth, or death have ever been found - though plenty have looked." For all you or I know, Petway was singing a song that already existed, or was interpreting and existing song. Both the lyrics and the riff. In any case, Voodoo Chile is at the more recent end of this song's evolution.
Muddy Waters' version is a cover. Song had been around for a decade before Muddy recorded it, so don't give people a hard time when you are not correct either.
Great tutorial as always! Just one note, you're playing the E minor pentatonic for your first scale that you call "just E" then you slide down to the 12th fret and play the same scale calling that the minor pentatonic. They are the same, you're just playing it an octave higher. And that note that you're playing that you say isn't in the scale (4th fret G string), is in the scale. It's a B and is the same as the open B string. Totally in the E minor pentatonic. All that stuff aside, you're a great player and I learn a lot from your tutorials! Cheers!
Great lesson love blues guitar songs can you continue with lessons in this genre…also would like to see some slide delta blues songs don’t ever see any instruction on this 👍🎸
I like your teaching style. Thanks for the vid. Btw the first scale you showed was E pentatonic in first position. And the note that is not in the scale is the ‘blue’ note that is the flat 5 that is in the blues pentatonic scale. It is mostly played as a passing note like you said. As long as you resolve to a scale tone it will sound good.
What is the leather bean bag looking thing you have for support call? Where can you buy them? That is a must have as I play mostly on the couch. Thanks and hope you see this.
Great video! P.S. that G string 4th fret note is in the scale. He's playing With E pentatonic and that note is a B in the 'second position' of the scale in the famous 'BB King Box' P.P.S break out the first position on the improve guys!
What guitar are you playing in this video? I've never seen fret markers like that before. I love the looks of the body and binding on that. Thanks for teaching this tune. You gave an awesome lesson." Peace.. Joe
This has to be the most wicked short blues riff ever, which I think is why Jimi chose it as part of Voodoo Child. Actually, it's not even a riff, it's a lick.

Good catch! Should've known that haha
The first Catfish Blues was by Robert Petway, its a different take for sure, but Petway's was the first, recorded in 1941
CarefulObserver You guys are all spinoffs of pussies.

Thank you.. I was considering pointing that out... and also the other point about this actually being a Muddy Waters song... sigh.

Thank you!
Good feel and tone. Thanks.
BTW that fretted B on G string is in the minor pentatonic scale, as you played before (2nd string open)
"Spinoff of a song by Jimi Hendrix". Well that and dozens of others over decades.

You’re a good player and you play with feel, which makes it strange that you don’t know that you don’t realize this is a song by Muddy Waters.
Muddy first Captain
It's a spin off of muddy waters!!
This has to be the most wicked short blues riff ever, which I think is why Jimi chose it as part of Voodoo Child. Actually, it's not even a riff, it's a lick.
