- NEW MUSIC out July 17th. Fortunate Son ft. Nath Jackson and Mik Crone will be available on all platforms from the 17th and we can't wait for you to hear it 👍❤
A bit of a different video today showcasing more of the differences between the Minilogue and Minilogue XD. Here we just built a patch as similar as possible across the two synths then demo them for you to hear. Nothing added in post, this is just the KORG Minilogues as they sound out of the box 👍👍
All recorded and edited using Cakewalk by Bandlab and Hit Film Express.

You can really tell Korg improved the filter resonance on the XD
Yeah gotta love the filter on the XD 👍👍
It’s a shame korg went with the slim keys for these synths. Just sold both to upgrade to the Prologue 16. I honestly liked the OG over the XD. Both were amazing.
Hey thanks so much for dropping by I would love to have the Prologue. It's probably going to happen as soon as I have a bigger studio space. Let us know how you get on with it 👍👍
Was hoping for a direct comparison of the 2pole (XD) vs 4pole (OG) filter. Preferably a stabby bass to compare the slope on upper harmonics.
Will see if I can get something recorded for you, thanks for dropping by 👍👍
Got a new video comparing the filters, the OG Minilogue certainly loses a lot of low end with the resonance up. Anyhow hope this clears it up for you a bit 👍👍

Different FX, I know … but it does seem as if the XD is a touch more polite (more in-tune, maybe), than the og … 🤔.
But then, I’ve heard others say they think the og sounds slightly hollow, by comparison to the XD … 🤷🏻♂️
Not a lot in it, though, either way …
2:33 … 3:10
2:25 … 3:02
I would probably agree that the XD sounds more polite and in tune, maybe slightly tamer.
Nice comparison! 👌🎹🎹
Thanks man 👍👍
So I have an original Minilogue and Monologue. Was thinking in swaping the OG+Mono for the Xd but after spending some days with one XD it did not feel anything different... just a regular synth. The OG has character and personality. That metallic sound will be always necessary. XD just felt...regular. Monolgue is amazing too, so I just got a tr8S ahahaha
Thanks so much for dropping by and watching, I know what you mean about the metallic sound of the OG. I do love the XD as well though they're both amazing synths for the money. And the Monologue, just wow.
Keep OG, no regrets, EVER.
Great video! I like them both a lot but only own the OG. It's more of a specialist for that classic sound compared to the XD. It can be a bit fiddly with its filter that thins out the low end but so does the MiniMoog and many others, so to me that's also part of that classic sound experience. The XD delivers a wider palette and is clearly the better allrounder synth but for me the OG makes more sense. Korg did it right with these two. Can anyone name another real VCO four voice (or more) analogue poly in the same price range?
Hey, thanks so much for dropping by. I know what you mean about the OG having a classic sound it's an absolute power house 👍👍
Fully agreed. I happily sold XD (purchased to replace OG) after a while. OG is purity synth. The last thing I need are effects (have much better in my EFX outboards) and as pure synth OG marvels.
XD filter is much richer and when set to same midi but panned far left and right for some reason the release sounds weird on the original mini.... almost as if there’s a hint of extra tail or reverb/chorus that extends a few milliseconds past the XD’s release. I guess you could learn to like it if in fact it was due to the nuances between the two synths and not simply a slight offset in settings between the two in your demonstration.
Hey, thanks so much for dropping by and watching. They are very different synths so this is kind of as close as they get. I just love them both 👍❤
Hello😏Could you tell please, how you played both two synths by the one keybed? Thank you
Hey, thanks for watching and yeah this is really easy with the Minilogue, just take a midi cable from midi out to the midi in on the second synth. As long as they are on the same midi channel this will work 👍👍
@@TheOceanBeneath aaoou and that all😂👏👍Thank you. Hello from Tallinn 🇪🇪🇪🇪🇪🇪
Original Minilogue is the best synth ever made, same league as Minimoog. Costing almost nothing. XD is more like Moog Voyager in comparison. Go OG if you don't own one.
Interesting, I probably lean towards the XD ever os slightly myself but would probably put the Prologue above both of them in terms of sound. The bass is just nicer on the Prologue in my opinion.
@@TheOceanBeneath Agree. Prologue is step up, but Minilogue is one that I keep always ready in my work. Side by side with One, Omega 8, vintage Prophet 5 and some other heavy hitters. It is so dirty inexpensive so most comparisons seem unfair.
👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
I can link this model with the module one?
Hey, thanks so much for stopping by. The Minilogue XD can be linked with the module, it will however need the firmware updating if it's still on the original factory firmware. You need to look for Poly Chain under Global settings 4.
I think they work well in tandem. Different beasts to a degree. I don't think you can find a poly analog $499 synth off the street that would beat the OG.
Totally agree, having both is just an amazing match 👍👍
The filters are completely different. The OG has an option for 24dB/oct which works really well with those oscillators, which are a bit fizzy.
The OG has a high pass filter (hidden in the delay, but useable without)
...and the OG has that analog delay which can create sounds all of its own.
So there's plenty of OG sounds you couldn't do on the XD.
...and famously, that digital oscillator on the XD...I didn't forget
This was an interesting comparison though.
Hey Andy, thanks for taking the time to watch the video 👍👍
Listening though audio technica m50x, it sounds like the Dx has a bit more buzz and growl but the original definitely has warmth and would be a great choice as well.
Totally agree mate. Thanks so much for stopping by 👍👍
Listening on the same set of cans..... YEP
@@damelos4039 thanks for stopping by and having a listen, how're the m50x for monitoring?
for me minilogue og is a winner
Sound wise I think you're right, the XD just has some more convenient features. Thanks so much for stopping by and watching means a lot to us 👍👍
The OG has a nicer sweep. But XD has user oscillators and can give you a plethora of useful features that the OG lacks.
I feel irritated over one thing...Korg "threw away" the usual +/- or up/down arrows and you're now forced to use the clicking encoder to dial in a sound, it creates a lot of wear on the encoder. One just could have pushed an up/down button.
On the Alesis synths (which have a same weak design) the selector encoder became worn out fast, it's a common problem with their synts, especially on the Micron.
I have ancient Yamaha stuff (CS6R, Motif rack) and they have up/down buttons, after 20 years it still works well, but I'm worried about the Minilogue encoder, unbelievable that Korg did this stupid mistake. Otherwise these synths sound like nothing else, they sound very "expensive", I've never liked the harsh overpriced DSI stuff.
Despite having the XD module I also had to buy a used OG, I like its sound and the silvery chassi, lol. (they should have kept it, the black paint on the XD is a fingerprint magnet)
Hey, thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a message. Totally agree with the silver finish, the XD just looks dusty all the time 😂😂
@@TheOceanBeneath
Thanks for your reply!
My remedy to avoid fingerprinting the XD is to use thin white gloves I purchased recently, it works fine, I can't stand the greasy look, hehe. I also have 2 other modules (Radias, MS2000) none of them have this fingerprint problem, you can touch them without marks...strange mistakes by Korg. Also thanks for the comparison, good to see that you "need" the Minilogue OG too, hehe.
This video is very well made but I'm still undecided between the 2, I prefer the vcos sound and the filter of the OG but I like the built in effects on the XD
Hey thanks for dropping by, If I was going out to buy just one of them I think I'd go for the XD now. The effects do make a huge difference, especially if you wanted to use it live or without a DAW.
@@TheOceanBeneath Thanks for the answer, I've just subscribed. I don't think I'll ever play live, I began to "concentrate" on synths around a year ago, I come from 25 years of rock drums and guitar playing and recording studio owning, I'm not a good keyboard player. I just like to arrange songs in the daw in my studio
@@LB-pp7pu Hey, thanks so much for subscribing, really means a lot. Would love to hear some of your material. I too am from a guitar background and only got in to synthesizers around 2 years ago. Anything online I can listen to you've created?
@@TheOceanBeneath Great! I play in metal/rock/punk oriented bands but always had a piano and keyboards around the house because both my parents used to me musicians. At the moment I have not published any "synth made" songs because I want to get better anyway I'm working on some dark ambient songs and some pop/italo disco ones (I'm italian). Thanks for your interest!
Both are fantastic, integral parts of my setup. Love these synths
Aww man thanks so much for stopping by and your kind words, really means a lot. Would love to get them paired up with the MS-20 mini like you have 👍👍
Back in a day i was so glad when i saw XD model.... i thought "wow this is just OG but better and with more functions"... but i was wrong. XD sound feel too "roland" for me (thanks digital fx!). And i was not willing to pay a whole grand for this sound. It's cool tho, what if somebody in love with Roland sound? Good for them but i stayed with OG.
The OG is a great synth, don't blame you for sticking with it 👍
Falling Island brought me here! Greaaat comparison, btw. It's the one video I needed for such a long time now haha
Hey George, glad you liked the video and thanks so much for watching 👍👍
Which one would you chose as a first syntheziser between the OG and the XD for someone who is interested in producing house and techno music, more oriented to studio and not to play live. Thank you for your time.
Hey Christian, thanks so much for your question and for stopping by. I would personally go for the XD for studio use or live use, the sounds are just easier to dial in and speed can make all the difference when in the studio. I've used the XD on pretty much every single layer of sound on our upcoming EP 'For the Love of Music' just to give the whole thing a nice analogue feel and it was a doddle getting everything I needed.
Hope that helps 👍👍
Definitely OG for its purity and several functions Korg dropped on XD. Wha tis added can have appeal to some, but I didn't like it to degree to keep XD over OG.
I’ve been looking at the Ploy D, mono poly. I think the mini lounge is the way to go.
I would recommend an XD to anyone buying a new synth 👍👍
XD does sound ‘better’ to me (and pitch bends seem easier/smoother with the joystick) … but do miss both the sweep squelch and 4-pole option of the OG 😢 …
Is that ‘squelchiness’ there in both filter modes … ? Cheers!
Hey man, thanks so much for dropping by. The joystick is hands down the single feature that is 100% better than the original, not even up for deabte. The OG pitch bend is so clumsy in comparison.
@@TheOceanBeneath Thanks for that! I’ve heard someone complaining that the joystick came off easily (I assume they meant the cap/perhaps it became threadbare)?
@@kierenmoore3236 yeah I've seen a couple of people saying that as well. To be honest had mine since launch and it's absolutely fine. Maybe some heavy handed players.
Which one would be better for ambience drone dream pop?
I would decide if you're going to use it live or not, if you are the XD has the built in effects to carry that sound and make a easier rig. If not and you want that lo-fi drone at home in the studio the OG Minilogue maybe has a better suited sound and probably a little cheaper but to be honest either of these would tick all the boxes for that kind of music.
XD all day long FTW!
I find the XD much easier to use and program!
@@TheOceanBeneath I went ahead and got a desktop xd 8 voices is so many voices for this thing.
@@timothypnolan Would love a desktop to pair with mine 👍
What is the first patch
Hey, thanks for dropping by 👍
Pretty sure it's just both oscillators set to a fairly simple saw wave.
Which one has the better bass tones or is the grittier? Can the xd have the movement in its patches as the og?
Hay, thanks for stopping by and having a listen. In my personal opinion the OG has the lower bass end and probably a bit more natural grit but the XD is still my preference when it comes to programming and playing the synth itself. You can also record motion on both synths in the exact same way, probably easier on the XD.
@@TheOceanBeneath yo, thanks for replying! I might be getting the OG for budget reasons but also love the bite it has. Love your new song, btw
@@mauriciosanchez7598 honestly you'll love which ever one you get and thanks so much for checking out our new track 👍👍
XD is the best choice for bass.. Its resonance does not kill the bass..In OG, it goes out at resonance.
@@deepofomin7616 Can't say I've experienced this to be honest but both are more than capable 👍👍
Thanks for the comparison. I've had my eye on the Minilogue XD for a while, but I'm concerned about the Envelope Generator section because it only has Attack and Decay and no sustain/release like the OG version or other synths. How do you manage to work with the XD with that limitation to produce the sounds you want to make?
Hey thanks so much for stopping by, it really means a lot to us!
To be honest I've not missed the sustain and release controls on the EG. The XD definitely makes up for this limitation with a whole array of other controls and options 👍👍
How many keys can you play at one time on this piano?
Hey thanks so much for stopping by, this is a 4 voice synth so 4 keys at a time but they can also be stacked for unison and such.
@@TheOceanBeneath what if I plugged the module into a piano with more voices?
@@tf-dh9ti would still be 4. You can link 2 XD modules together to get 8 though.
@@TheOceanBeneath why wouldn’t they just make it so you can play all the keys you want? What is the point in limiting the amount of keys being pressed, it’s a bad business model.
@@tf-dh9ti might be worth asking them but I'm guessing it's a budget issue. We just own the synth 👍
