    The first step in converting a tractor to electric is to get the tractor in the first place! The International Harvester 300 Utility tractor was delivered today. Please click SHOW MORE!
    The tractor was delivered! I was very cold out this morning, so it was a little hard to start. I brought out a spare battery and jumper cables and that made it perk right up.
    Not having actually DRIVEN a tractor before, I tested it in the driveway. Hydraulics work well, and once I found 1st and Reverse, I could move it around my driveway!
    Last night, I accidentally found a scale model of the tractor at the local farm store. I was temped to buy it, but my money is better used elsewhere right now!
    Of course, I wouldn't say no to a sponsor or donor right now!

    No problems getting the tractor into the garage. I'm still glad I didn't knock off the muffler!
    Please make sure to like/subscribe/ and share! I'll be making a "Electric Tractor Conversion" Playlist as I go, so check that out as well!

    It’s going to be nice seeing something a little different being converted to electric. It’s going to be awesome!

      It’ll be real interesting considering the engine block is also structural to the tractor.

    Nice tractor. Leave it alone.

    Sounds like a nice running tractor. A hydraulic check valve orifice installed on the up hose of the loader and properly adjusted, will slow the "down" function and make it safer. I had to do it on my farmall 350 (the row crop version of the same tractor) because the week hydraulic pumps on these tractors can't refill the backside of the cylinder as fast as it goes into the reservoir and the oil would overflow...

      Andy Fromm You can control the speed of the loader by how hard you push the lever. Run it enough and you’ll be able to operate it smoothly and accurately. No need for any add ons, just experience.

    Hi Ben. This looks like a great project. I have a 1948 Allis Chalmers with a seized engine I would like to convert to electric. I will enjoy watching your conversion of this tractor. (I really wanted to buy your truck too.)
    BTW... To my knowledge, no gas engine likes any back-pressure. It is just lost horsepower. The one positive thing an exhaust system does besides reducing noise, as a secondary purpose, is to prevent cold air from getting to hot valves too quickly and causing them to bend when you shut the engine down in a cold environment.

    NICE project. I don't feel well if I don't have a project to work on, preferably big. Have a 1950's tractor, been thinking about this. Thank you.

    That truck you used to deliver the tractor was blowing a lot of white smoke. Time to replce it with an electric truck.

    Unpin the hinge pins then use hydraulics to push entire assembly forward... Do it outside. Because you want Hydraulics to help push it forward then you disconnect hydraulics and drive backwards..

    The loader looks home made and too big for the tractor.
    Bucket sticks out way to far, you want it closer to the front of the tractor. Gonna need lots of counter weight, loaded rear tires and something on the 3 point.
    Looking forward to see your progress on this, keep us informed.

    This pioneering project might turn out useful for off-grid homesteads. Do you plan to retain the PTO drive which is handy for a variety of implements and tools 🤔.

    If for some reason you need to take off the rear wheels, be careful! The fact that the tractor has a loader and the rims have some rust near the valve stem are a good sign that the rear tires have been filled with calcium chloride solution. The wheels will be a few hundred pounds heavier than you might expect.

    I have one of these but someone done a hack wiring job on it, the fuse is for the lights I assume? Also the pull to the left, choke perhaps?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX

      I don't recall exactly, as I'm converting it over to electric anyways.
      The wiring on it is pretty simple. I'd recommend buying an owners manual for it.

    G'day mate. I've got a weird question for you. I've finally done my plug in prius conversion and it has a 240v 15amp on board charger and I was wondering if there is a hack to be able to use the public charge stations with the j1772 connectors to connect to my plug ins 240vac 15amp charger with an adapter cable?
    Regards Blair Fraser

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  4 роки тому

      Yes, you just need to make an adapter with a J1772 Input and an outlet that fits your charging cable. With the J1772, you just need a very basic circuit that signals the J1772 to activate.
      I built such a box for charging my electric motorcycle at public J1772 charging stations.

    Ben, Don't you have a right foot pedal for the gas. That would free your left hand from crossing over and hitting the gas to run the hydraulics.

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  4 роки тому

      The throttle is a lever on the instrument panel. Unlike a car, there is no gas pedal.
      This is the first time I've ever run a tractor at all, so I probably look ridiculous doing it. I'm literally learning while on camera!
      If I just set the throttle higher and left it there, that would probably run the hydraulics just fine.

      @@BenjaminNelsonX I was going to warn you about shifting, but I guess that won't matter soon.
      On a tractor, you select the gear you wanna run in, and take off from there. You do not go through the gears like you do on a car.

    • @jeffwindatt
      @jeffwindatt 4 роки тому

      @@BenjaminNelsonX Got it. Our old International tractor had both the lever on the panel and a foot pedal, that's why I assumed yours might as well. Maybe that is an addon that you could easily do if you wished (if it was going to have a throttle)

  • @calholli

    I wouldn't do it on a tractor that runs, myself. I'm sure there are many places out there, scrap yards, junk yards... car pars yards.... that will have non-running tractors that you could get for basically free. Destroying a well working tractor like this is gonna be a lot more expensive with not much pay off. Just my thoughts. lol. maybe I'm just jealous that your tractor is better than mine, and even has a front loader. cheers.

    • @JSBIRD69
      @JSBIRD69 4 роки тому +2

      I agree. Killing a running machine in my part of Colorado is considered blasphemy.
      You could easily trade that running tractor for two or three non running machines.

    • @douglas_drew
      @douglas_drew 4 роки тому +2

      Agreed, if you have an impeccable source for a nonfunctional tractor that you can be sure of, like a friend, neighbor, relative (wait...), um, best yet your own tractor that you know for sure only has an ICE problem. But without such certainty, finding a completely functional machine and parting out the things you don't need is a much better way to go (especially with my wife not appreciating the items I try to save), rather than finding out later that the transmission, rear end, etc., are also junk worth nothing but scrap metal (very low value where I live). I like Ben's concentration on conversion instead of end to end repair.
      Gotta get outside to fix my tractor now.

    • @calholli
      @calholli 4 роки тому +2

      @@douglas_drew I get your point..But most things don't break on tractors.. they just get overworked and need a new engine 9 outta 10 times. more searching would have found a better candidate. I mean, this thing has a front loader and everything. lol

      I just needed to get the tractor out of my driveway to start with. The loader is huge and heavy. First thing I need to do is figure out HOW to get it off. Then I'll do that outside.

    • @camperjack2620

      If the bucket sits on the ground, you can make something that looks like a child's swing set over the pin end of the arms , support the weight with chains and pull the pins to back the tractor out from underneath it. 4x4 and 4x6 will be adequate to support the weight. Lift valves sometimes have a float position for backblading with the bucket down. Find the right market, people are going to want that sweet sounding engine.

    I'm confused why convert a perfectly good tractor to electric. When you can get a non running one very cheap and not ruin a working classic piece of American history. Hopefully you sell all the good parts to people that need them 😄. That's a great idea for a more modern tractor because they aren't built to last like that one. Can't wait to see what you do to it in the future though.
