    Since I started emulating ps2 I’ve nearly retired my ps5. There’s so many games I’ve now played for the first time, that I had no nostalgia for, that I thought were leagues better than literally anything last/current gen. MGS, Silent Hill, GTA, Jak, GoW, Midnight Club, Battlefront. Like I didn’t even know a generation could have so many 11/10 games. There’s been only a couple games in the last decade on that level.

      Yeah, the last (and only three) great games I have played were Baldur's Gate 3, The Witcher 3, and Fallout New Vegas. The rest have been disappointing and it feels like 75% of newer games released are either cutscene-heavy, follow the Ubisoft formula, or are packed with microtransactions. I mean, I borrowed Spider-Man 2 for the PS5 from my co-worker and that game was so bad that I returned it to him after 2 days. It quite literally had the worst writing I've ever seen in a video game, the dialogue was retarded, the combat sucked, and most of the characters seemed to be gay or trans. They even made Mary Jane look like a man and made Miles Morales stronger than Spider-Man despite him being a teenager.
      Was just extremely disappointing, God of War Ragnarok was pretty bad as well sadly.

      @@alazaythegamer6636 Ok so you're going to need to download a console emulator which is a piece of software that can mimic a console and play its games. For the PS2 your only real option is PCSX2, don't worry it's free, and legal to download and there's video tutorials on youtube on how to set it up. You're going to need a PS2 bios, which you can download from the internet, the PS2 had different versions for different regions (each with its own bios), so an American PS2 can't play a Japan only game. All the different regions are available online but it's something to keep in mind. Downloading them from the internet isn't 100% legal which is why you're not going to find them on the same sites as emulators (there's a way to get them from an actual console but I don't know what it is). After that you're going to need roms, think of an emulator as the console itself and roms are the individual games. There's a way to rip them from actual PS2 discs but you can also download them from the internet (which is piracy, but I don't think most people would care about pirating games that old). Once you have the emulator and the roms you can instruct the emulator to play the roms and then you're playing the games. You can also connect a controller to the PC and play on that, you might need to tweak some setting in the emulator first though but it's not hard. This may sound like a lot but most of this is stuff you only need to do once.

    Summed up perfectly. I’d been feeling this dread since hearing about the “phantom console” around 04 and the rise of the online compatibility on consoles. And it all came true, worse than I’d imagined. It makes me so sad thinking about all eras of gaming I played since the 80s, the constantly amazing fully featured games released nearly every single month and how rotten it’s become, it’s like a ghost town for games. I have a ps5 and it’s literally gathering dust.

    • @chriswestTV

      I was just talking to a friend about how we’re about 3 & 1/2 years into this generation and we’ve gotten no “classics” yet. The type of games people will talk about and come back to for decades to come. We’ve got a bunch of uninspired “nu-games,” and tons of remakes. I’m not saying there aren’t any good games, in fact, I think that there’s more good games then ever, but I don’t see many developers reaching for that next level like they used to. Now, they’re just figuring out ways to extract more cash from us and not make the best games that they possibly can.

    I'm tired of games that get praised the most usually are the ones where even the fans will say the actual game part of the game, the gameplay, is mediocre or even downright bad, but the story is great, i.e. the part of the game that turns into the movie and is often times not that great of a story.

    • @JG9Youtube
      @JG9Youtube 8 місяців тому +8

      Yeah that's the big area where gaming has suffered. And the salt in the wound part is they've actually taken steps backwards in terms of using the medium to innovate in storytelling. Older games did it more creatively and inspired, yet they get constantly insulted as the modern industry 'masterpieces' get lauded as "finally proving games can tell stories and be art" by frauds who frankly don't care about gaming.

    • @chriswestTV
      @chriswestTV  8 місяців тому +6

      I couldn’t agree more! So many developers clearly just want to be making movies, and couldn’t care less about make a game. It’s so blatant now. I actually used to like the “movie games,” but that was when things were still fairly balanced. Now, it feels like we are so disconnected from the actual flow of both the gameplay and the what is happening in the stories that I complete checked out.
      These games make for great trailers and they look really slick when the bought & paid for influencers play them in their glowing review videos. However, in practice they’re just hollow experiences, all monotonous. The gameplay is just a thin coating that’s gets you to the next cutscene. Incredibly unrewarding.

    • @JG9Youtube
      @JG9Youtube 8 місяців тому +2

      @@chriswestTV Yep, sadly almost everyone who has financial stake in the industry is in on it, influencers, reviewers, gaming youtubers, devs, publishers, etc. They've been trying to change (remove) standards in gaming for a while, to make everything they put out hype-able, guarantee success and thereby boost their own careers. The 'community engagement' aspect is less talked about but plays a big part. Many gamers think it's a goodwill thing, that the industry is 'in tune with gamers', but in reality its the industry conditioning and managing consumers' expectations.

    • @maboilaurence8227

      YES, I just commented that modern games focus more on being cinematic experiences than on being a fun GAME. I don't understand why people put up with this. I mean God of War 5 is the worst offender by far, they literally have the narrator tell you how to do each puzzle the moment you walk up to it just because they want to get you to the next cutscene as smooth as possible.

    Right now, I'm playing Lost Odyssey and Dante's Inferno with Xenia in 4K/60fps on my big OLED. It's Gorgeous! I've played these games when they came out and I'm having just a great time again enjoying those real games! I'm playing video games since the 80s, I've collected nearly every video game console since then, as a Kid I was playing games in the local ARCADE. I must clearly say, when it comes to video games, I had the best time in my life with the N64, the Sega Dreamcast, the Gamecube, the PS1, PS2 and the Xbox 360. Everything after that, doesn't felt great anyomore. Today there aren't any real video games in terms of "Classic Gaming" anymore. There are only "Interactive Movies" like Alan Wake 2, so boring and really bad. The first Alan Wake on the Xbox 360... omg it was and still is AMAZING. I can highly recommend everyone to play the old games, then you will realize how BAD todays games are!

      I’m such a mega-nerd I’ve always enjoyed grinding in RPGs when it’s done right and not abusive of my time. However, in multiplayer games that can be kind of iffy because that’s usually just a tactic to get you to spend $$$ on in-game boosts. There’s a limit to how much of my real life time I can spend doing the same repetitive tasks over and over before I just turn the game off and never go back to it.
      There was a few times I remember playing various Souls games and needing just 1 more titinite chunk or whatever and it just being absurd to try and get it. I hate stuff like that, it can majorly tarnish an otherwise good experience.

    I just got into emulating gamecube games, and the amount of game I am playing has skyrocketed. I have easily 30 games I really really want to play on Gamecube while my modern Xbox series S sits stagnant. And then I have every other old console as well, I never owned a PS2 so I could probably play new games to me on it for many years, and then I'd still have everything I want to play on PS1, Saturn, N64.
    These games just feel more fun, the difference between a game made to be as fun as possible and a game made to be pretty/cinematic or heavily monetized is night and day. At the end of the day I want to have fun playing games and these older console games focused on that more than modern games. Modern Gaming died in 2004 when Kill Zone released their trailer and called it "in-game footage" which it clearly wasn't and they where called out for it being pre-rendered garbage, and sure enough...it was. The industry followed suite and thats when the f*ckery began and gaming went down hill ever since. It's all about money now, but the original creators of the industry where in it for the passion and love and fun (and no politics).

      I definitely feel like game development prior to the mid-2000s was a labor of love and passion. Of course, it’s always been a job too, but before that time business was only a part of it.
      It used to be a bunch of intelligent nerds that just wanted to make the best possible game they could because they themselves loved gaming. There was passion, love, and soul put into the development process. Now, 99% of gaming is all about the business. There is such a shocking and saddening lack of care for the art of game development.

    • @chriswestTV
      @chriswestTV  7 місяців тому +1

      You’re right about that, if a game is free-to-play then it’s not really too egregious to have in-app/in-game purchases. Especially if they’re just cosmetic in nature. I think I started getting a little less tolerant over time because of the amount of games charging a full retail price, and then adding in fees on top of that became more & more. It’s especially bad when the content that’s already on the disc/in the game is artificially cut just to be sold at a premium later.
      I’m really interested to see what the state of gaming will be in 5-10 years from now. Good for you for standing your ground with Call of Duty! It’s not easy to walk away from something you once enjoyed like that. 💪

      It’s REALLY depressing when the company/developer/series you love decides to go full greed-mode. I’m hoping enough of us push back against it, stop buying incomplete games, and send a message to these companies.
      We’ve seen huge companies change course or outright fail because the consumers went elsewhere. Even Microsoft is putting their games on PlayStation now, and I never saw that coming this soon. Strange things can happen.
      If Game Freak feels the pressure then they’ll have to adapt or die. I haven’t played Palworld, and I don’t think that’s a “real” replacement for Pokemon, but it’s clear that a HUGE portion of the audience is hungry for something more than what Game Freak is willing to deliver. With enough greed and hubris, their customer base might just leave them high & dry on the next release.
      Either way, I hope you’re enjoying all the great games we already have. Like I said in the video, I have such a huge backlog, and I love replaying my favorites. No need to buy the newest release just because it’s what’s “hot” according to the internet marketing machine.

    Started to game again during the Covid in 2019-2020 and at that moment i havent played a game since the Ps1+AND GA 500 YEARS SO YES M OLD.
    Didnt know how sick the gaming industry had gotten during the many many years that had past since i played Gta(1sr game)
    So i could no longer buy games in a box on a cd/Dvd to pc anymore n that was not the sadest part even!!!
    After a few early access games i just had enough n started to emu switch+Ps1+2+3 nes 8bit+c64+Amiga500 n Xbox games on my new pc
    After a horrible introduction into bad not even working games i just went from 100% legal to 99% illegal gaming.
    I bought a few games more that also launched faster,run better n higher Fps when played from a cracked version of the same game i just bought.
    Gta5 was 1 of these games that took forever 4 me on my cheap gaming pc to just start up from Epic through Rockstar n then the actual game..
    I dont know exactly when a STOLEN GAME is supposed to work much better compared to the bought one?
    But so long that im capable to get cracked games on new released early access games for free in going to keep getting those instead.
    Or so i thought up until the recent Release of a game named NIGHTINGALE.....BUT that turned out to be another game in the early access crap in my collection that was released for free by crack groups just days after i bought it+Turned out that the illegal version again worked better then steam/epic version did.
    So why even buy games at these moment when the gaming industry keeps pushing out games that will work as they should about 1year after release?
    I will now only buy games from the biggest love story of gaming titles in the future n the next one will be the Dragons dogma 2 70usd(just insane...45-50$ would be a ok price+Understand that games cost extremely much to create,but still they do earn extremely obscene amounts on the games that works n are well made....so as long as people are insane n pay 40-200usd on a single game year after year the industry will keep increasing the price n see no interest in lowering it either .
    If nobody would buy a new release in a show of force for a few months to show them that its time to release full games that actually work n not cost like some games do w all content in the 100s of usd sometimes n thats insane.
    So when will gamers fight them to get working games n not broke games that hide behind the Early Access name+The price must be possible to lower n still get a big profit on released games im sure of this

(Note you need somewhat over the top CPU and specific ones for peak performance on emulation) PC just has the games in my opinion. Kenshi, Matchless Kungfu, Noita, Rimworld, mods like Movie Battles 2 for Jedi Academy, even PS2 game modding like for Kingdom hearts 2 FM (on emulator and on the pc port). I still play old games like sims 3, sims 2, Klingon Academy, jedi outcast, Star Wars empire at war... Only reason my pc has good gpu is Cyberpunk and Red dead redemption 2 otherwise i would still be using a gtx 960 or 1660ti.

    I don't think the apathy towards new games is right. "Just finish your old backlog". Yes don't buy shitty new games. But yeah definitely buy great new games if you like them. Lies of P is my GOTY 2023. Great gameplay, great souls formula, great graphics art design and atmosphere, almost no bugs on release date (encountered only one really minor one) and it performs great even on older GPUs like gtx 1060. We should support devs like these to be a counterweight to the shitty ones. Also I don't think skins or microtransactions (for free to play games) are inherently bad. In the end games are still bussiness. For example Deep Rock Galactic or Lies of P have skins as optional DLCs that you can buy and it only affect visuals but you get skins even in-game by playing. This is an option to support developers extra further if you want to. It doesn't have to be scummy and it gets the devs more money. Pre-orders are still a hit or miss tho and I would avoid them completely.

I will say, I didn’t gel with it as much as I was hoping to. I feel like the enemy variety was too repetitive, the long walks down corridors got a little tedious, and I also would have liked to get more Alan Wake in the game. It was decent enough experience overall for a rental/single play-through, but that’s just me. Man, I know A LOT people will be mad at that comment, but I completely agree. I know that’s a lot of my nostalgia talking, but I feel like most big devs/companies spend their time figuring out how to nickel & dime us.
      They use our own fandom as toxic fuel to shame anyone that doesn’t love the “brand” or the “product.” It’s unfortunate, but there are still a lot of great games that have come out.

      @@chriswestTV - the only two modern games I play right now is Valorant (only when friends invite me) and I’m almost done with Final Fantasy 7 Remake (PS4). Of course modern games have their positives too. FF7R is an absolutely incredible masterpiece and many people as well as I were sad that we heard it was going to be a 3 segment game. But once I played it, Good God, they went insanely in-depth with the original game’s storyline and super accurate too. I can’t believe it. No wonder it took them so many years to make it and 4 years more for the second segment to release. The game is done right. ZERO PATCHES since day 1. They made sure the game was perfect before release just like how games used to be. When I play this modern game, I’m completely immersed into the game and it literally feels like a 50 hour movie. Love every moment so much. Besides these two games, I’m playing retro games 95% of the time (right now is mainly top rated PS1 RPGs that I never played before).

    Excellent video. You nailed it perfectly. I've been gaming since the late 70s and I can honestly say that modern day has never been a worse time to be a gamer. DLC, loot boxes, pre-order bonuses, day one patches/updates, paying full price for games that barely function on release day, live service/always online garbage. Thankfully I'm old and wise enough to not be duped into all these shady practices. I refuse to pay a subscription fee to play online - something that was free when online play was first introduced. I never pre-order. Never buy games on release day and never pay full price for games. Especially since you're only buying about 40% of the full game and having the rest sold back to you as DLC. And to make matters worse, 90% of games released today are remakes remasters or re-releases of older games. The whole industry is just one giant scam and it truly breaks my heart to see my once favourite hobby exploited and destroyed like this.😪

I had few Zune mp3 players (this was way back) they all died on me and before they died the software to get songs on it was awful, multiple 360s like I mentioned in the video. The Xbox Series X/S is the first Xbox hardware I didn’t buy. I still don’t even feel remotely tempted to get one. Seems like they don’t want to be in gaming, they just want to own the marketplace and have people forever “rent” through gamepass. I’m not disparaging the brand, the hardware now seems great, but I got a PS5 this gen and it’s all I need so far. I try and buy physical games any chance I can, but even then the game is barely on the disc now. You still have to download large portions of it to work properly if at all.

      Thanks for the comment! I sure hope we do get back to it. I don’t have any problem paying for a quality title, but it’s clear now more than ever that many companies are artificially holding back content to resell it to the consumer at a later date. Hell, they don’t even pretend to wait anymore, games will have hundreds of dollars of “extra” content you can buy on day 1 after playing $70 for the “base” vanilla game itself 😂. Naw bro, I just wait and get the “complete edition” in like 6-12 months. My patience has paid off ever time 👍

    They still make gaming more about the games then anything!

      I agree. Nintendo has been really reliable, this generation especially. I love the Switch. It’s refreshing to have a system that just does gaming, and does it really well. It’s quick, it has a clean user interface without intrusive ads. It’s just ready to go. Same with the DS & 3DS, I still play both. So many great games!

    Lets spread this... We don't have to play only the newest, shiniest thing. There are tons of old and obscure (sometimes abandonware and free) titles for us all to enjoy, we can't even finish them all in one life time. By doing this, we can stop spending fortunes on new hardware, stop paying full price to new games and still be able to enjoy playing games. Being a gamer doesn't mean you have to follow trends. Companies determine trends and we all know their intentions.

    We are spending money on the console. An ecosystem we are part of and the prices we pay for the services. For that reason, it goes beyond games.

    I can afford to buy any system I want but none of these new 5 star games interest me honestly so until that changes I’m good with my switch and GameCube collection.. I also have pretty much every NES game I ever wanted on my emulator

    • @chriswestTV
      @chriswestTV  7 місяців тому

      Same here! While I’m definitely not a rich man, I have the luxury of being able to get pretty much whatever I want as I please. I don’t spend a lot of money regularly so when I want to “treat” myself I can. …too bad that a lot of this gen has been really iffy in many ways. We’re definitely in the generation of the “remake/remaster.” Still, I do think we’ve had a lot of quality content, but it’s really easy to lose sight of it because we’ve had more slop and garbage than ever as well. Switch has low-key been a beautiful pure gaming machine this cycle. No extra fluffy needed, just games. It’s very refreshing.

I have over 600 games I can't even access. But now my PC has launchbox and big box. I now own almost every game in existence. I have no regrets. Lol

    Well, kinda, but not totally. I had 3 RROD's as well, but the 3rd one I grabbed all my Xbox games and traded them in towards a PS3 and some games, back in 2012. I have been using it since, I actually played Mass Effect 2 today, I am running through the trilogy again. I gave Microsoft more than enough chances, and they totally let me down, and I will never buy another console from them again. My Nintendos all worked perfectly, my Playstations, my Segas all worked flawlessly. I have put more hours on my PS3 slim than every other console I have ever had combined. The console is a huge part of it to me, I went through one xbox per year for the first 3 years, yet I have been on the same PS3 since 2012. I love a good game library like anyone else, but I will not buy a console every year just to access them. Besides, I have most of the games I had on Xbox anyways, the exclusives on PS3 are vastly superior and my favorite cross platform games like Battlefield series are actually better on PS3, so I am glad I made that decision.

    • @chriswestTV

      I definitely can appreciate your stance. I personally prefer the PlayStation brand. Not hating on Xbox/Microsoft, but I’ve been a huge fan of PlayStation since the PS1. I wanted an N64 for Christmas when I was a kid, but my parents got me a PlayStation instead. I remember being mildly upset as a bratty kid, but once I started playing Twisted Metal, Resident Evil, and Crash Bandicoot I was blown away. Been a fan since.
      The 360 releasing before the PS3 was the only time I ever swayed in another direction. However, I eventually did get a bit salty with Microsoft after having their Zune mp3 player back in the day. Around the same time that I had my second 360 fail, I also had my second Zune die. After that, I never really got invested in any Microsoft product.
      Now, the PS5 & Switch are my two main systems, and I’ve been really happy with them. This generation is the first time I didn’t get the Xbox, and I still have no desire to do so.

    So basically, STOP buying AAA games upon release and wait till the game is officially bug free and ready to have a AAA gaming experience without any bullshit.... Or if it's released by Nintendo, go ahead and buy day one. Cause the big N knows their shit and doesn't release unfinished games. Okay, I got it. Good video.

    I love playing all my games on a ps4 controller with emulators and pretending its the perfect playstation that plays anything I like, or the same for pre 32 bit era games with an 8bitdo fc30 controller. I guess it's like the "Phantom console" but one that works flawlessly and a lot cheaper! I rage quit PSplus ages ago and haven't looked back.

      Sounds great! I always try to buy my games, especially when it’s a great game and I want to support the developer for their quality work…. BUT, some of these companies go out of their way to not give us easy access to legacy titles or the engage in really scummy business practices. When it’s that way, I have absolutely no problem with emulation. One day I’m going to get myself a quality gaming PC or one of these fancy new handhelds from China that play everything and fall down a rabbit hole of all the classic titles I missed out on.
