  • A rapid charger in a Shell forecourt, in the middle of London. I never thought I'd see that. Well, it's happened, you can use it today.
Will electric car drivers use them?
Will Shell install loads of them?
    We certainly hope so.

So they're adding 10 charge points this year. They are "learning" how this works. In 2017.
Folks, stop trying to fool us. Here in Austria, the local oil company "OMV" bought a huge stake in the most prevalent EV charge network "Smatrics". You guessed it, pricing is now at a level where you'd actually spend less money by driving a gasoline car.
I don't believe for a second that Shell or any other oil company is embracing EV chargers to enhance electric mobility. They embrace to extinguish.

Yes, and no. The Writing is on the wall for fossil fuels. OMV, are doing it; because, they have sweet FA competition. Once people cotton on like you, quit posting comments on UA-cam, and post a video taking the piss out of OMV, I am sure you will see them about face. If Shell, get in this to wreck it they'll only make themselves vulnerable to innovations by those who aren't in it to screw it.

Here’s an idea to keep paying simple.
    1. Plug in car and leave to charge.
    2. Go into the kiosk and pay for how much electricity it used.
After all that seems to work really well for petrol and diesel right?

Supermarkets and shopping centres should also being doing far more. Charging while doing your weekly food shop is far more convenient in my eyes than hanging about a Shell petrol station
In my local area, Aberdeen Scotland, Lidl and Aldi have rapid chargers. Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, M&S and Morrison’s have not one..HUGE car parks that would be ideal for charging. Disappointing that these companies aren’t investing and helping climate change

Yes, it's not more than a wall socket around which a a charging station has been built, but it's free, and it gets the message out :)

Had a horrible experience at Shell station, Chertsey Road, Addlestone on 30 Nov 17 when I tried to use one of their new rapid chargers. First of all, a Merc SUV had iced the only charging bay.
After waiting for some time my wife, Christine went on the hunt. A guy eventually saunters back to his SUV and sits in it while the Shell Manager loaded goods into the back of the SUV while Christine and I waited in the freezing cold.
I asked the manager why he was acquiescing in the icing of the charging bay. His indignant retort was, "What am I supposed to do, he's a customer?!"
When I said that I would report the matter to Shell he was unfazed. He said, "Go ahead; I don't care!" It then dawned on me that the SUV driver was almost certainly his boss. I guess that means the owner of the franchised station. I may be wrong about that but Christine observed him coming from behind the counter with the manager.
After all that, we couldn't get the charger to work. Called the support line. After 20 mins on the phone (mainly on hold) I was told that the Smoov app wasn't working. We spent the best part of an hour to get zero charge from Shell!
If anyone here could connect me with the appropriate person at Shell Recharge, somebody who cares about this sort of customer experience, I'd be very grateful. End of rant. Thanks for listening!

love your channel. Personally I'm very skeptical of Shell's motives... and who wants to spend time in a smelly gas station? There are many nicer places to charge.

Not really in central London. I think this is Shell getting ready for the non-petrol future.

Most ‘gas’ stations being built or refurbished here tend to have either a small supermarket or some sort of food outlet in them now.

In Romania most of the chargings are being done in the malls, although in the center of London I guess there is not enough space for this.

This is such a major "battle" won! I mean I would never give any of my money to Shell, but still, if they're jumping on this train, that's huge!

This is really exciting stuff im so happy to see coming in fruition. I think even in the next 5 years we will see a huge shift towards electric. It is definitely going to replace the combusty! Then in tandem all of the renewable energy sources will become available which is also great. I think with what im seeing here we will need to have 1 standard nozzle and instead of using paypass i see no reason why the car wouldnt have an id chip linked to your rego so it knows who owns the car and just bills them that way. Also need to figure out charging arrangements for those of us with no garage but hey it's early days. Love it!!!

Lessons: 1) under a canopy to protect from the weather, 2) solar pv panels across the main canopy & shop building, 3) battery storage, 4) dedicated charging (parking) bay, 6) be cheap or it wont be used

Whenever I hear someone in a conversation going out of their way to call the other person by name every second or third sentence ("Well as you know, [insert name], our company has always held the public health to be of the utmost importance." and "That's an excellent question, [insert name again], and I think we'll meet that challenge in the next year or two.") it sounds so incredibly artificial.
It's so obvious that they've attended a corporate management class that's held that up as "A way to maximize engagement opportunities with the public, improving synergies and laying positive groundwork for the highest possible blahblahblah!".
I've run into people in real life who do that, and it always made me want to just shake them, and tell them that real people don't talk that way.
    Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

What do you do while its charging? It still takes very long to charge and getting a coffee only takes 10 minutes

The thing I find most interesting is that around 40 seconds in you see Robert walking through the forecourt where if you look carefully there are notices saying no phones. Does any one see the issue here? Yep you can only pay and connect to charge the phone using an app on a smartphone in an area that phones are not allowed. I assume I missed something and there's a Faraday cage around the car charge area or something magical like that.

Finally! - this is what anyone without a driveway/car parking spot needs to seriously consider an electric vehicle, Let's hope they roll these out across lots of locations quickly and rapid charging becomes the norm alongside as i can see space/car parking whilst charging being an issue if not considered carefully

Something I would like to see is shopping markets and malls have more charging stations. If I go to either one I usually spend more than 40 mins and depending on the speed of the charging that could mean a full battery. Plus it means more time spent at either one which means potentially more business for them.

I don't know how long it takes for charge, but is there someone to move the vehicles around if there's more than one car that needs to be charged? Obviously you don't want someone sitting there all day if they are already charged up, but what if they cannot come back to move it immediately?

Something I've not seen mentioned in other comments is that EV's take a while to charge so even a top-up is going to take 15 mins or so compared to the 5 mins for filling with petrol. This is a massive advantage to the filling station as their shop income from coffee, food etc will jump massively if in the future there are several fast chargers and several thirsty, hungry, bored car owners hanging about. This is a very good move by Shell & BP as they know it will increase their profits long-term (and is good green PR for them)

Hi Robert. Love your channel, have been a viewer for a long time. I just need to correct one of the thing you mention tonight. In that here in Ireland we have many 50 kW
Chargers in petrol stations/garage forecourts. If you require any photographic evidence please let me know. Regards Séamus

Petrol stations know they make most of their money in the shop now as the margins are much higher. This is great to keep customers in the service station shops longer (just as Supermarkets are)...
