  • Stripped of her character and confidence, Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock felt she was fading away in the band.
In this chat with Fearne, Leigh-Anne details the moment it clicked how big a part racism was playing, and why she now feels a duty to speak out. She explains how - as well as re-building her self-worth through therapy - she finds it helpful to ask herself what her fearless children would do. Fearne and Leigh-Anne also wonder whether we always have to know exactly who we are, or whether we can just let ourselves be...
Leigh-Anne’s book, Believe, is out now.

This conversation is not new, just new to those who hadn't heard or weren't listening. Black people have always discussed racism, in public, in protests, in literature and art. It's now that it's literally shoved in people's faces and on people's phones that many others are realising what is an everyday reality for many black people and how they may be contributing.
So many things in society make it hard for black people to have these conversations openly with white people. Here are a few hazards when you speak up:
Gaslighting (as Leigh-anne experienced), victim-blaming, retaliation, backlash, alienation, defensiveness, manipulation.
Many people haven't reached a place where they can genuinely and compassionately acknowledge racism and work to doing better. There can be a lot of lip-service and small gestures but no real change. So with all that, speaking out can be emotionally and mentally exhausting and can cause further trauma. That's why there are books like "Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Racism". The people who really want to change, will change. Endless recounting of racial trauma won't change those who don't want to change.

What's for you is for you, but the work put in will always show its fruits, and once you look back, you'll appreciate all that extra efforts that you put in.
I feel for Leigh-Anne because not only was she feeling the pressures being less than due to race, she was also in a group with top tier other singers and that can also be a battle within, when we compare the vocalist.
What I do hope though is Leigh gives herself credit for that hard work because these vocals be FIRE and I hope she stays pushing herself in that aspect, because her and the others talents are impeccable 🔥.
Shine young queen and really ENJOY THIS! Theres so much QUALITY in Leigh and I want her to continue to tap into that.
Very proud of her progression so far and stay believing in yourself.

Yes these topics need talking about, i Live in England in a area were there is very few diffrent races than White folk!! My Partner of 14 years is Black, his Mother is from St.Lucia & Father is Jamaican. I am not being paraniod but we do get stared at by people in local supermarkets, for example & its summit i just cant get use to, so i stare back until they look away, He says just ignore them im use to it, Its not something he should be use to, Specialy White men. Shock horror theres a Black man with a White woman😮. We have definetly choose before we were born to have this life together.💛

in any band there are favourites and least favs. Beyonce got the most attention in Destiny's Child I believe Michelle was the least fav. Thst was not about race. Well you are solo now it will be interesting to know about the demographics of your fans.
