Hi. I'm Max Dalton, and in this video I'm going to talk through how to remove someone from a group chat on Apple iPhone or iPad.
Group chats in the Messages app on your Apple iPhone or iPad are a great way to spin up a conversation quickly with a large group of people. However, someone group chats can hang around forever, and you may not want someone who's lingering on a group chat to have visibility into your conversations. If someone in a group chat is no longer needed, Apple makes it easy to remove them from that thread, ensuring that they'll no longer see messages in that particular chat thread.
And now, the steps to remove someone from a group chat on iPhone or iPad.
Step 1. Tap to open the "Messages" app on your iPhone or iPad. The home screen for the Messages app appears, displaying your open conversation threads.
Step 2. Scroll down through your message threads, and then select the group chat message thread where you want to remove a participant.
Step 3. Tap the blue "i" icon in the upper right corner of the screen. The Details window appears. The name or phone number of everyone in the group chat appears in a list.
Step 4. Scroll down to the name or phone number you want to remove from the group chat, and then swipe a finger slowly from right to left across that person's name until you see a red box start to appear with the word Remove in it.
Step 5. Remove your finger from the screen. The red box with the text Remove inside of it appears to the right of the name of the person you want to remove.
Step 6. Tap "Remove." A dialog box flys up from the bottom of the screen, asking if you want to remove this particular person or phone number from the group chat.
Step 7. Tap the red "Remove" button. That person will be removed from that group chat going forward.

This saved my life.. I was in a group chat with all my friends and slowly random mean people started getting into the chat randomly and it wasn’t so original.. they would spam mean things to us and none of us knew how to get rid of them.. I got rid of all four of them thank youu

Thank you very helpful but we are a group that keeps growing and adding member so there are 19 in one and then a new group starred wi th 20 members so how do we get completely rid of the original one
Thank you but my iPhone which is an 11 S doesn’t have any of the features that you show here I open up the contacts on there and you can’t remove anyone if it if you swipe left it just goes to where their contact is in my phone.

Debra, it works if everyone is using iMessage. Also, you have to have more than four people in the chat.
I just did it with the iphoneX ios12! Okay, you have to keep your finger down on the persons name and then swipe, delete will show up, select it and bam!
This is a very good instructional video, however when I move my finger from left to right or vice versa over the name I want to remove, a red box does NOT appear. I have iPhone 8
Thanks! Everyone needs to be using iMessage. If they aren’t, you won’t be able to do this. Also, I believe there needs to be three or more people in the chat. I hope that helps!

I have a XR and the latest update ... the phone will not allow me to Swipe and remove like your video suggests... any other ideas?? Or deleting the group text completely is fine in this case...
The group needs to have at least three (maybe four) people in it, and everyone needs to be using iMessage for this to work.
What if you have android user in a iPhone group chat is it a way you can still remove ppl or do I have to make a new group chat

Is there a way to remove someone from a group chat if you did not create the chat. The person who created it is not available for a month. We don’t want to lose the string, but one person needs out of the string. He cannot get out or mute. Can you help?

Max, I have an iPhone 8 Plus, and every time I try this on there, it doesn't work.
It should work on that hardware. It may not work because I think you have to have at least four people in the chat and everyone needs to be using iMessage. When I update this video in the future I'll make sure and call that out. I missed that on this one and it's probably the most common issue people have with this.

What about if not everyone is using iMessage? What steps do I take next?
Your best bet in that situation is to honestly start a new group text with the people you do want to keep around and mute the other conversation.
Oh ok. If I mute the conversation no one would be able to receive messages on that particular group text?
You would receive them, but you wouldn't be notified. Unless everyone else also mutes that conversation, they would continue to receive notifications.

Darn this is not working for me. Perhaps I did something before that did not work and now it's making this fix not work also bc the "Remove" function is not available. I no longer want to see this group chat because I set it up at an old employer and have since left.

The red remove button doesn’t show up on mine. It brings me to the data info of that person instead which I don’t want to delete

I don't have an iPhone 5 to test on, but it should work. You have to have at least four people in the chat, and everyone needs to be using iMessage in order to do this.
thank you for the reply, Max , in a perfect world everyone would be using Imessenger, but as luck would have it if you have at least 4 people in a text chat you know at least one is not going to be using imessage which in this case I suspect is the issue , anyway thanks for the suggestion, peace !
