As a youngster in the 80's, we had some really fab music.
We were blessed back then, I'm still feeling blessed to this day.
Who's with me? 17/9/2024.
At 21, I never thought I'll live to be 65 and still feel the emotions of my youthful years.
59 here. Still a great tune
62 here.👍
I'm with you there my friend! I'm 55 but feel the exact same way
48, and still feeling this one
Dito, same age too.
I was 14 when I first heard this masterpiece i love this it makes me emotional as my parents were both alive life was for living no worries and the world was a lot happier place to live in oh I wish I could go back !! 😢❤❤❤❤❤❤
Felt😢,sorry bro

No puedo detener mis lágrimas. Siii...es música que llega al corazón. Estaba muy enamorado.
I was 17 when this come out in 1980 still a classic

The 70' s and 80' s where the best time of my life. Wish I had a Time Machine.❤😢
We all feel the same way but what can we do
If you get one, I beg you, find me and take with you. I have a conversation to finish.

Totally agree. For me too.
Few songs like this can make you feel so sad, nostalgic and happy at the same time.
Obra de arte, inmortal.
That's right!!
👍spot on
It is WOW!🙂😉
You're so right
44 years later, still a master piece!!!!
Great music like this never ages..
I was 18 when this song came out.
Born 62 and 62 now.
And I still love this song.
i heard this song in a cinema during the intermittent on my last day exam in 1979
and soon you will be 63. Congarts !
Same. Always loved the arrangement of this song, so different from what we usually heard. Still have the 45. And like you, still love it.
Still in my head after all these years
The simple life we lived back in the eighties
I remember it being racist and boring, had to move homes because of street violence. rose colored glasses are for suckers and dementia patients.
It has the same haunting magic as 'I'm not in Love'
the days.
I was just thinking the same then I read your comment.. Majick or what

If Melancholy came in a bottle then this would be it!! Superb.
Even to me, being too young to know it (like 4 yr old by that time). It has the same spirit as songs from 3-4 years later that I do remember and just as amazing or even more.
@@BilisNegraI was 2, but thanks to family, we would have heard a lot of these early 80s gems!
I played this song in my Beirut apartment as I packed to leave, days before the airport closed in the summer of 1981. Listening to it now brings back the scent of jasmine, the noise of the street outside, and the feelings of fear, exhaustion, and intense sadness at leaving the city and man I loved. He is long dead now, and our daughter born the next year is 42, but the music brings it back like yesterday.

Had my heart broken when this song came out, took many years before I could listen to it again. Everybody's gotta learn sometime...
This is a timeless masterpiece.
After more than 43 years the song still remains timeless unlike the garbage of today
I couldn’t have said it better!
Yep, the autotuned crap that all sounds the same where you can't tell one 'song' from the other as the lyrics are meaningless and the so called singer can't even hold a note. Give me 60s ,70s and 80s stuff anyway. Pure talent.
y'all are clearly not trying hard enough to find good music out there and it's so sad
There are some good musicians out ere u just have to look.... not just except the recycled greats... and new rubbish that there putting out
Has emotion, heart and soul..❤...takes the listener on a musical tapestry😇😊..has an effect on the inner self, unlike the soul less bilge' of today🥺
I was 9 years old at that time 1979 i could hear it on radio and still today im 54 it still make me shiver with emotion.these past moments cannot come back but how many good memories i have of these periods and that i call good music by good musicians.
One of the reasons I love UA-cam.
Same here🥰
I was 11 in '79, my Mum introduced me to music 🎵🎵✌️❤️🏴

Was listening to an interview by lead singer James Warren ,and he said at the time he was getting into Buddhism, and that the song isn't a love song ,but it's about trying to sort out his inner turmoil, and look at the world through different eyes ,and learning about the different meanings of life and the universe.
In a similar vein to George Harrison who said that he got Christians to sing hallelujah at the beginning then switching to Hare Krishna at the end of My Sweet Lord.

Makes complete sense
More relevant today than ever then...

It reminds me of leaving school in 1980,so it must have been the last half of 1980.
Like everyone else says, the song has only got better with time.
The song was released in 1980 and will never get boring, this is a great timeless song sung with great dedication 💯👍🏻💯👍🏻💯👍🏻💯👍🏻💯👍🏻
To the non musically trained this song sounds quite simplistic, but wow how amazingly complex the harmonies are, it's just beautiful. Very talented composer and performers. I love this song.
there are two versions of this song. This one has the keyboard, but I've encountered another version which I think had an orchestra. This was not a live version either!
Great. The synth-violin solo with cats is the icing on the cake for me.

The first time I heard this song was at a cemetery, I was visiting folks and this song came on the radio,Made me see how insignificant we really are and how circumstances can change in tthe blink of an eye. wonderful song..
Mine and Tony Blackburn's favourite! This was my favourite Single from 1980 - was never off my turntable throughout the Summer of that year! I had a hard time getting a copy; sold out everywhere I went... I was so excited when I came out of the shop with it - I ran all the way home!
Well I was 24 in 1980, but this song and lyrics made a big impact on my life! Just listen !
I remember this song. It was so beautiful and haunting.
Still gives me a thrill listening to the hauntingly beautiful music since it was first played.
Wonderful song especially because of the voice and keyboards (and also for the violin and the cats at minute 2:20!)
The violin and cats at 2:20 up high on the ledge and silouhetted by moonlight is very Garth Marenghi-esque for real.
Oh my I never noticed that 😳
That’s my uncle Stuart on the violin ❤
This song is beautiful. An absolute classic. Takes me back to my youth and happy times.
One of the most astoundingly brilliant products of instinctual, spontaneous, near-instantaneous songwriting in the history of popular music
I AM AGREE.
Hadn't heard this on decades. Heard it today driving through the medieval town of Beverley. Seemed perfect.
Went to a party in the 1980s and a young fella kept requesting this so he could slow dance with me. Great times.
I wonder if you still remember his name and what happened to him after that? Did you keep in touch?
@@quayevano I'm also looking forward to an update 🙂
I, too, am looking for an update.
Never saw him again, he was a friend a workmate brought to the party, he was much younger than me and the spark for me wasn't there. Workmate told me a few times after that Brian wanted to see me again, but as I say, I wasn't really into him. But it's still a great memory when you're 70, and no one asks you to dance anymore. p.s, no one ever usually likes my comments, let alone replies, thank you all xx 2:20

I haven't heard this song for many years but it popped up on my You Tube feed today, so hey voila! here I am. I first heard it in late 1980 as a 15 y.o. in Melbourne, Australia. It really is a wonderful, simple soulful and melancholic yet uplifting tune. An intriguingly pleasant mix.
1980 wow it never gets old love the message and synthesizers melody great song
One of 1980's master pieces, I give 1,000,000 yesses.
I wasn't aware of this song until I heard it on MeTV radio in my car yesterday. I'm Gen X and love '80s synthy music, so I'm puzzled as to why this great song escaped me for so long. Heard lead singer James Warren talking about the meaning of the song ,saying,"at that time, he was just getting into Buddhism ,so the song wasn't a love song ,but it was about trying to sort out his inner turmoil and looking at the world through different eyes".
This is no bull.
The guy playing the violin is Stuart Gordon. His mother, Joyce, originally married to Jim Gordon (deceased far too early) was my Dad's cousin. The family ran a funeral director's business in Bedlington, the premises are still there but under another name. Stuart died just over 9 years ago. He was one of the finest composers and session musicians ever to walk this planet. He has a twin brother Keith and a sister Christine, whereabouts of both I'm not sure. We used to visit them at the family business and being totally incompetent in anything musical, i was blown away by their ability to pick up virtually any instrument and create magic. Stuart was in many bands, The Korgis, The Shortwave Band and many others I can't recall. I still have an original vinyl of The Shortwave Band from 1975.
Thanks for sharing.
UA-cam music vids comments are full of these little anecdotes of families, friends and fans. They bring the humans behind the pop music artists come to life.
I believe Stuart Gordon played with Peter Hammill for quite some time as well?
@@henq 100%....
I never knew that but always wondered who played the solo. The melancholy and melody in the solo is truly magical and helps make this song a masterpiece. From Bedlington in Northumberland as well ?
I am from Bedlington and was at Bedlington Grammar School (1966-1973) and the Gordons were there at that time. They were a year or two older than me. I actually thought that Stuart and Christine were the twins and that Keith was younger, but I may be wrong. They were all lovely people as I remember. Stuart and Keith were in a band called The Lynx with, I think, Duncan Tyler but not sure who else. I remember them playing at the school once.
In a different time when it seemed every song was a classic, and this one sure is.
The future we live in overcomplicated simplicity. Beautiful, absolutely overflowing with beauty...

I just turned 60 bbut only heard this song for the first time about three years ago. Thought it was new!!
Wow, i thought this song was my favourite Beck Song, I couldn't find it on any of his albums - probably one of my favourite songs ever - and now I've just discovered the Korgis!
Un tema para escuchar en la soledad de una habitación y alejarse del mundanal ruido y poder pensar en esa soledad acompañado de esos acordes y con la magnífica interpretación de ese vocalista.
I was in a synth pop band in early 80’s in Kent Ohio. We loved the Korgis. We did a good cover of Dumb Waiters.
First heard the Dream Academy’s version and was instantly in love with this song. Reminds me of the Beatles. It immediately draws you inwards to a state of regret and realization. Happy I found the original version.
Definitely Remember this tune! Otherwordly, Orchestral, Unique and Unexpected nuances - maybe everyone here has a similiar interpretation that when you are younger it's much easier to change your heart and let's face it the Love comes much easier! When I was 20 this was the reality now over 60-not so easy to change your heart and Love is so much harder! Maybe the message is being able to reflect and learn that Love and the Good times are invaluable and should be treasured! Not at all surprised at this type of musical genius in the U.K. - it just seems to have this astonishing talent reservoir!Cheers fron Canada!
