I played this song in my Beirut apartment as I packed to leave, days before the airport closed in the summer of 1981. Listening to it now brings back the scent of jasmine, the noise of the street outside, and the feelings of fear, exhaustion, and intense sadness at leaving the city and man I loved. He is long dead now, and our daughter born the next year is 42, but the music brings it back like yesterday.

Workmate told me a few times after that Brian wanted to see me again, but as I say, I wasn't really into him. But it's still a great memory when you're 70, and no one asks you to dance anymore. p.s, no one ever usually likes my comments, let alone replies, thank you all xx 2:20
It's 2:45 Sunday morning AM. And this was the first time I heard this song out of radio station called WJMJ. Luckily they have a playlist and I was able to look it up. Being here in the US I've never heard this before. What a memorizing and great song. Heard this last night while watching the Enforcer movie with Antonio Banderas. This is no bull. The guy playing the violin is Stuart Gordon. His mother, Joyce, originally married to Jim Gordon (deceased far too early) was my Dad's cousin. The family ran a funeral director's business in Bedlington, the premises are still there but under another name. Stuart died just over 9 years ago. Yeah, it's beautiful isn't it?❤
@@hopebgood, absolutely, great song
@@garygoldsworthy4674 Yup. It is. It really is 😀
you don't need much to make a great song. Simply soul..
It reminds me of leaving school in 1980,so it must have been the last half of 1980.
Like everyone else says, the song has only got better with time.
Ce genre de mélodie qui vous envoûte n'existe plus de nos jours. Années 80, du pur nectar👌
Très nostalgique et oui incomparable avec ce qu'on trouve aujourd'hui. C'était l'âge d'or ❤
Songs that whisper in the night. Love this song
Been a long time since I’ve heard this. A beautiful song.
First heard the Dream Academy’s version and was instantly in love with this song. Reminds me of the Beatles. It immediately draws you inwards to a state of regret and realization. Happy I found the original version.
Beautiful song which has stood the test of time.
Nice. Got a very 10cc feel to it.
True. It does. Like their great 1975 hit "I'm Not in Love." Both songs are classics now. 😊
How have I never heard of this band or this song? I’m an 80’s kid
They also did "if I had you" which is also brilliant
What do you mean by 80s kid? Were you born in the 80s?
Wonderful song especially because of the voice and keyboards (and also for the violin and the cats at minute 2:20!)
The violin and cats at 2:20 up high on the ledge and silouhetted by moonlight is very Garth Marenghi-esque for real.
Oh my I never noticed that 😳
That’s my uncle Stuart on the violin ❤
Great song back then - still a great song now in 2024 - lovely melody, arrangement and great lyrics. We never had it so good in the 50s to 80s when it came to bands and musicians creating music
Less blacks too.
@@HANNIBALBARCA247 and yet all music from the 50s onwards is of black origin... I guess irony can be pretty - well... ironic, sometimes
This song is a masterpiece and has always made the hairs on my body stand up, just pure magic!
One of the most astoundingly brilliant products of instinctual, spontaneous, near-instantaneous songwriting in the history of popular music
I AM AGREE.
This was a 'beatles' moment in England 1980, I remember it well I was 15/16. Thank you Korgis!!!
