    What I love about those Duke pens is they write buttery smooth and they are built to last for the rest of your life. You could probably pass them on to your children and they might outlive them lol. I have a Duke Charlie Chaplin pen with a #6 Fude nib and it's built like a tank. Thanks for the upload! I’m buying another Fude from him, this time with a Jowo # six nib on a DD eyedropper. Could you please advise on the angle of the nib - 55 or 45? Maybe this was mentioned prior: when you writing Chinese characters with a calligraphic style, you need to vary line thickness in both axes continuously. I am guessing this is the core purpose of a fude. Interestingly, I see a lot of great Chinese pen calligraphy with very flowy gel/ball pens using a softer surface (where you flex the paper, not the nib), on thirsty paper.

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  12 днів тому

      I may have mentioned that it was initially used for Asian styles of calligraphy. The soft paper trick is also great for drawing, and something that I'll have to cover.

    I managed to get a Jinhao 750 with a fude nib. I do have the 450, but with their regular writing nib. I have a half dozen of the #6 Fude nibs in case I mangle one by accident. I also got the green Sailor Fude De Mannen, and it's rather difficult to use. But a nice find was a Jinhao 101 with a Fude nib. It's slim and light, but with a metal barrel and cap.
    I did snag a couple of real finds that I like a lot: the Osprey Madison with the Ultra-Flex #6 nib, and they have an alternate nib unit for the Zebra G. Both have excellent ebonite feeds that supply plenty of ink. I have on order a pen that looks somewhat TWSBI-ish, but could be a Wing Sung or Yongsheng, but with a nib unit that takes a Maru mapping dip crowquill nib. I like a little crowquill for fiddly bits. Like the Zebra G, I ordered a box of the Maru nibs, too.
    I also found a set of replacement nib units for my favorite Hongdian Rainbow Forest, a fine, extra fine, and Fude, with that titanium rainbow finish. Not sure about the section, though. It might be black instead of rainbow, but that's okay. I really love that pen for some reason. The medium nib I have on it is very smooth and forgiving, and the weight is just right, especially posted.
    So I've been taking your advice. I looked at FPNibs, but the site was very difficult to navigate if you don't know what to get. I'll try again, though, it might just have been that my brain was full that day. Are FPNibs and FP Revolution the same place, or different?

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  2 роки тому

      The great thing about fudes is their affordability. You can get a pack of 5 fude nibs for under 10 dollars, stick them into a jinhao, and they will work great. The same can’t be said for flex nibs.
      I think the easiest thing to do at FPnibs is to buy a pen that you like, and then select the nib customization menu. I believe they offer the fude customization on just about every pen the sell.

      @mkompan  15 днів тому

      You're very welcome! I just tested the 209 for reverse writing, and mine puts down a consistent xxf line. It's pretty scratchy however, given the fineness. Sometimes a pen can be made to reverse write by running it against a 12000 grit micromesh. It's something I demonstrate in my "Stupid Pen Tricks" video where I show a number of fountain pen hacks.

    Hi Marc, I watched this video ages ago and brought a twsbi 580 with a custom nib from fp nibs. Since then, my girlfriend has borrowed the pen, after I switched over to a falcon. Her dad tried the fude pen and he loved it. We were thinking of getting her dad a fude pen, but I'm a bit stuck on one detail. He doesn't like converters and would like a cartridge pen that can have waterproof ink 😅 Any recommendations?

      @mkompan  Рік тому +1

      Hey Jason. Did you mean that your girlfriend’s dad doesn’t like pens with built in filling systems? I ask because all cartridge pens can also be used with converters. For a good cartridge filled fude pen, I recommend the pens made by Duke. I like the Duke 209, the Ruby and my favorite, the Duke 600 (featured in my more recent video on fude pens). These pens take international cartridges. BTW, I believe the only waterproof ink that comes in international cartridges is made by DeAtramentis.

    EDIT: found local inks that work just fine with x450 and 209, my pens were clogged with cheap inks from cartridges (Schneider 6601). After I washed that ink out and left nibs in water for a night they were fine to work. But I still recommend to try 551 :)
    Old comment:
    “I did exactly that: x450 + duke 209. Bad experience with both: ink flow inconsistency, not so smooth nip. I tried several inks but then bought duke 551 which works just perfect with those inks. Yeah 551 is a bit heavy but it’s so much better then x450 and 209 - it’s another league in all regards. I strongly recommend to avoid x450 and 209 and try 551.”

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  Рік тому +1

      @@deeeeeeeeeeeeeeee glad to hear it! Fountain pens are tricky, in that even if they’re used frequently and cleaned, they still need a deep cleaning once in awhile, since ink residue builds in the feed, eventually leading to poor performance. The one disadvantage of the Duke 209
      and to a lesser extent the Jinhao is the difficulty of doing that deep clean, since in the former the nib doesn’t come out, and in the latter only with a rubber grip and some muscle.

      Hi Jon. I'm sorry you're having this problem! How did you fit a #6 nib into a TWSBI ECO, which takes a #4 sized nib? I just tried and couldn't do it. Perhaps you bought the #5 nib instead? Though it's supposed to be a larger nib, the #5 fits very loosely into the ECO, and could be causing the problem you describe. Fortunately the #6 fits a very large number of pens, including the TWSBI Vac-700. For the #5 nib, the TWSBI 580 is a great choice. BTW FP nibs also sells #4 nibs for eco with the fude customization.

      @@colourdoodles3507 So, just to be clear, you received a TWSBI Eco with the fude nib modification, and it's burping? That's peculiar. I have four TWSBI ECO's, and have never had that problem (and I also use carbon ink). Burping is usually caused by your hand heating up the gasses in the ink reservoir, and can be mitigated by keeping the pen full. I would first make sure that the feed and nib are pushed all the way in (since ECO feeds easily slide in and out) and then contact Pablo, who is very good about responding to customer concerns.

      @@francoisdelfueyo4846 Great! I don't know why only EF. These are European nib sizes, so that EF might be equivalent to your Fude de Mannen F/M. Pablo, the owner of the company is very good about answering questions. I would ask him if he can make you a fude out of the other nib sizes.

    Video and analysis of different features of each model of fountain pen equipped with fude nib is very useful and comprehensive but, the vudeo results quite annoying cause of continuos focusing in and out of the camera. I donno what kind of equipment you use but a good review and an editing action prior to publication would advisable.

    I just got rid of a Hongdian 517D Fude. It would start out writing strong, and then fade and fade until it was barely legible. I think it was the pen. So, not a great intro to the whole Fude thing. 🫤

      Looks like that pen just needs a good cleaning, but there are plenty of good, reliable options out there.

      @@kjmav10135 Sorry to hear that! HongDian seems to have a pretty decent track record with their pens. Their black forest models are super popular, and I just posted a review of their two pocket pens that I thought were great. Perhaps you just got yourself a dud, which happens even with expensive pens.
